lemme explain

mentions of suicide, suicidal ideation, agoraphobia, intrusive thoughts, depression and paranoia

i just watched markiplier play this incredible game cause i was bored, i had no clue how accurate it would be and im absolutely stunned/pos

now i have no clue how popular this game is so im gonna give a small "hey this is what its about"

shut in is a game where you play as a character who is struggling with depression and agoraphobia - the fear of situations in which might cause panic - which is so strong to the point of being unable to leave their bed, even their own house causing them to be stunned with fear

the main objective of the game is to get outside to get some fresh air

the game is described as a horror/comedy adventure game but i think adding puzzle to that mix would help describe it better because as you play you have to constantly avoid death

now this is where my interest in it peaks

the character you play as is shown to be depressed and something that ive noticed often follows with depression is suicidal thoughts and ideation

now, whats the first thing that comes to mind when you hear suicidal thoughts and ideation?

is it thinking of all the possible ways to end one's life?

is it being purposefully wreckless in hopes of death?

is it something surrounding a building even?

is it surrounding large amounts of trauma causing someone to just end it for peaceful bliss?

or is it something similar to that?

from what ive noticed, thats how the media mainly portrays suicidal thoughts/ideation

but shut in is different

it portrays a sense of fear of death along with a longing for it

the best example i have of this is when you first enter the bathroom you can remove a screwdriver from the showerhead, and if you do that a swarm of flesh eating bugs flood out and start filling up the bathroom, if you cant get out of the bathroom in time, you die

to my best understanding, the character has an intrusive thought that if you remove the screwdriver a flood of flesh eating bugs will eat them and the "death" is just them returning to bed to avoid this from happening

thats where the paranoia surrounding death comes in

"but oh mud, you forgot about the part where the character wants to die!!!11" yeah, thats my next point

heres what the narrator says when you die there

the narrator (who is presumably the characters thoughts) is strangely blunt when describing your death, and the description of your death being quick when against the insects is basically saying "hey a bunch of fucking insects could kill you, how pathetic is that?"
