in the days leading up to May 8th, Peeta is much busier than usual.

the first May that she and Peeta were together following the war, Katniss was genuinely perplexed as to where Peeta kept disappearing off to during the first week of May, but now, she usually knows what to expect. when she awakes, she’s greeted by a bouquet of wildflowers on her bedside table. as she admires the dandelions and daisies, Peeta walks in with a tray carrying homemade french toast, eggs, and a glass of chocolate milk since it’s too warm for hot cocoa, and proceeds to shower her with tens of other gifts throughout the day.

birthdays are, of course, a rather touchy time in the districts, since they serve as a bittersweet reminder of the Games. some birthday mornings, Katniss is overwhelmed with the memory of Prim’s hugs and worried looks as Katniss left to sign up for tessarae after tessarae, the only way she was able to feed them during the less prolific hunting days.

the best gift she ever recieved, though, was the necklace that she got the May after her and Peeta’s toasting ceremony. as it turned out, he had been planning it for months. in march, he mailed Effie a package, containing a letter, a sketch of a design for the necklace, a check that he calculated should cover the cost, and a single pearl. by late april, he recieved the necklace, inlaid with the pearl, made to the exact specifications he requested. Katniss immediately burst into tears upon opening it. and so, even on Katniss’s worst days, the effort and time Peeta put into loving her always managed to warm her heart.

(i got the idea about the pearl being inlaid into a necklace from @triassictriserratops. i have not stopped thinking about that since i read it.)
