No because he’s God the Father, the creator of heaven and earth, but he’s also their dad. Like that’s their dad. Especially the archangels
like at some point through the series Castiel stops calling God Father and just starts calling him Chuck. The angles stop acting like a family unit stop calling him father instead just God. never the archangels even Lucifer and sometimes it’s mocking but most of the time it’s just what they call him. And the other angels say you’ll never be like YOUR father to Lucifer. Because that’s the truth he is his father not theirs most of the angels have never even met him he’s been a shadowy figure in the distance since they’ve been alive they probably didn’t even nOtice when he left until it all started to fall apart. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the lower angels miss him or they miss the stability of an unquestionable ruler.
Duma wants more Angels, Lucifer just wants his Dad and his brothers to like him again. Naomi wanted order and structure Raphael and Gabriel just wanted their Dad to make the fighting stop.
Castiel was searching for God to put an end to the Apocalypse Michael just wanted his dad to come home. Not to minimize the other angel’s emotional experiences but like they’ve never known God the dad just God the Father that created them and left.
Thinking about the “Careful. That’s my Father you’re speaking about, boy.” line now. Because like. Raphael is the one angel with the perspective of “god is dead/so far out of the picture and not coming back that he is functionally dead to all of us anyway” so you’d think that they wouldn’t care if Dean is an asshole about it. Or at least, that they’d care dean is being an asshole and flippant to them, an archangel deserving his respect, but maybe not so much a little blasphemy because well. God doesn’t care about even the important things, so what’s a little quip from dean winchester?
“That’s my Father.” it’s like. “That’s my Father.” He left home and never came back. He abandoned Heaven, and he abandoned Michael, and he abandoned Raphael. He left. No instructions and a world to run. And Dean Winchester is making jokes while he stands at the epicenter of a godless universe.
It’s more personal here, right? In the show, there’s God, that amorphous idea of something all-powerful that made the world and skipped out on it, and then God, the father who had some kids and went out to get milk and cigarettes and didn’t come home. Venn diagram with a lot of crossover, but what starts in this scene, I think, as talking about the former and only the former, very quickly shifts into being about the latter. Dean’s taking the grandiose, the “Who ran off and disappeared. Who left no instructions and a world to run.” and turning it into the mundane, “Daddy ran away and disappeared. He didn't happen to work for the post office, did he?”
I’m not sure where I’m going with this. Just that there’s a difference between an insult to God as God and an insult to God as the father to angels, and the way Raphael responds to the latter, the way Dean is able to rile them up by pushing that interpretation into the conversation, is interesting to me. Careful. That’s their Father you’re talking about. A deadbeat dad is still their dad.
I have literally been thinking about this (because I got stuck in a cycle of watching supernatural amvs) but like in the first few seasons of supernatural Misha Collins managed to nail his mannerisms so much that Castiel did legitimately feel strange.
I don’t know how to explain it but he legitimately look like nothing we had ever seen before.
He felt strange ,otherworldly like he wasn’t quite put together right and it just added to the unnatural ness of angels. The feeling like there was nothing quite like them.
Like I don’t know what exactly he was doing to his face to make it that way (maybe it’s just the inherent unnatural ness of such vivid blue eyes) but it’s not exactly that he lacked expressions and more that the expressions were done wrong like they were cobbled together by someone that was barely paying attention. It’s so cool honestly and just stands to show how good of an actor Misha is.
Because it’s something that no other spn angel ever really managed to match (even when they were aloof like castiel they felt more like Jack who was just learning everything for the first time instead of the inherent weirdness of Cas) and the writers just kind of abandoned that along the way and just started writing the angels like humans honestly. But it was exciting to see.
The only other angels I felt exuded the unnaturalneas like castiel were;
Matt Cohen’s Michael who just exuded unnatural levels of power. Like look at that expression those are the expressions I would expect someone second only to God to make.
And
This Raphael which just gives “I’m playing a game you couldn’t even hope to understand.”
Like these exude primordial being that I just didn’t get from the other Angels. The inherent strangeness of being an angel but looking uncannily human.
Brothers
I KNOW THERE'S BETTER BROTHERS
BUT YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE THAT'S MINE
murder by death - brother // titian - cain and abel
It’s the way this could be about any pairing of the archangels.
But the one that’s really speaking to me is Gabriel and Raphael I’ve always imagined them as twins two different halves of the same whole. Their not each others favorites but at the end of that’s their twin the only one I have.
I can imagine Raphael saying this after Gabriel left. Like she thinks he’s a traitor and a coward but that’s still her brother her twin the only one she has.
But this could be about the obvious Lucifer and Michael doomed to be on opposite sides. Michael doomed to cast his brother into hell but that’s still his brother.
Lucifer and Gabriel. Gabriel knowing that Lucifer is wrong and the path he’s going down will lead to nothing but pain for everyone but that’s still his brother.
Michael and Raphael, Raphael and Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel, all four brothers together for every misstep every wrong done that’s still my brother.
If Raphael was revived I think we should’ve gotten her and Michael being cunty little rulers together. They sit next to each other all posh listening the winchesters ramble on about whatever needs saving and when Dean inevitably says some something stupid they just turn and share a look. They walk into a room with Michael holding her hand like a dance partner and eventually we get a little waltz between them because Raphael LOVES high society things. She fuses over the clothes Adam has Michael wear and the next day Adam wakes up to one of his dressers drawers having been emptied and filled with clothes specifically for Michael. (The dresser was empty anyway shhhh) I know apocalypse!Michael was shown to have a high fashion style but you can pry the idea it was RAPHAEL who introduced it to him and told him it was important in the first place from my cold dead hands.
thinking about how out of all the Archangels Michael and Raphael could be happiest. Raphael could finally have her brother that she died trying to get back. Just imagine her and Michael and Adam all running around the world together. God really is dead and now it's okay now because they have each other. It's about abandonment, it's about letting yourself love again. It's about Raphael finally falling back in love with healing creation as she fixes the holy fire burn marks on Michaels wings from the cage. It's about Michael falling back in love with protecting as he once did back when the world was still forming. In a way it still is. Michael preens Raphaels wings in a way he hasn't for millennium and plays a plucky waltz for her to teach Adam to dance to. Adam tells her he was a pre-med student and she immediately presses him for all that he knows and then scoffs. She remarks at how behind humanity is and tells Adam things humans won't understand for centuries. Raphael works together with Michael to fashion Adam scalpels so sharp the cuts don't bleed. Michael makes them fruit tarts of the fruits from the Garden where all Gods creations once partook in the flavor and the joy that comes from biting into an apple so hard it drips down your cheek. They sleep in a bed with enochian symbols carving out a lullaby on the ceiling older than time itself with Michaels wings as shield from the world. The brothers sing with the wind and in the sky like they did so long ago and Adam dances to the tune. Michael tackles Raphael mid flight as they race to the nearest gala Raphael heard about on TV. She whines and complains but doesn't fight as he carries her as the way there. When Adam drags them back to a hole in the wall diner a women approaches Raphael and just has to know where she got that suit she's wearing. It's so beautiful, she actually has a job interview in a few days and is so nervous, an anxiety that tugs at the child standing behind the woman's leg. Angels were made to ease burdens, and healing isn't always physical. The bright eyed woman gets her job, Raphael will make sure of it. A day when they are walking outside a downtown area Michael jumps the fence into someones backyard and races over to the pool drain filled with mud and leaves and filth. Pulling up the disgusting plastic the Prince of Heaven dives his hands in and reveals a very large spider that wipes it's eyes clean of the mud with its front legs and shivers as Michael very gently whispers to it in a language long past waiting for it to get dry enough to move comfortably. When Raphael approaches he looks up at her and raises the oh so terrified creature and asks "Does she need healing?"
Raphael smiles at the meteor shower up above with her brother at her side. Michael snaps his fingers to change the color of the lights to match the wavelength of his grace warmed by the joy of having the two people he cares about most at his side. He doesn’t need to chose between his family and Adam they both chose him. Their days are as sunny or rainy as they desire. Their days are theirs and theirs alone. They are free.
No because actually I won't shut up about the way they made Raphael power hungry in season 6 when there was a very easy parallel to be made between her and Dean like it is crazy. Raphael wants the world to end because she believes after it would create paradise for her family. The weight of struggling to run the universe alongside Michael without any guidance has crushed her. She wants to open the cage to start the apocalypse but she also could just want Michael back. They were all each other had for YEARS AND YEARS. Especially when before season 6 it seemed most angels reported to Michael or directly worked under him specifically which makes sense he's the Viceroy of Heaven so he is probably mostly the one running it. It's kinda implied after Gods disappearance Raphael withdrew so when Michael was cast into the cage she not only had to deal with the grief of losing Michael to Hell but also now had to run all of Heaven BY HERSELF. Parallel this to Dean having lost Sam now lives an applepie life, a family, Sunday barbecues. All of that only for it to get ripped out from under him when he discovers not only is Sam back, but hes not even fully Sam. Sams still stuck down in the cage eternally tormented by Lucifer himself. They both could've wanted their brothers back but instead we got "Raphael is a traditionalist" Like fuck off, no she is not. What fucking angel would ever say "God is dead". She was interesting BECAUSE SHE WAS SO DIFFERENT TO ANYTHING WE HAD SEEN BEFORE. Can you imagine if Raphael had gone to Dean and told him they wanted the very same thing? That she would not only get Sams soul but heal it herself? The Holy Healer in all of Gods creation should absolutely be able to heal a soul don't tell me she can't. A fallen angel working with the king of hell vs the righteous man working with the healer no more it would've been hype
"If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing."
Or, after everything Sam and Dean get a letter.
Going off of this and this post imagining Michael and Raphael happy after the series ends and preforming a duet at a local bar late at night and then looking out at the crowd mid performance and seeing Gabriel eyes wide in the crowd. He quickly dips after being spotted but Michael and Raphael absolutely race like hell to catch up to him. They aren’t able to unfortunately, the only one that used to be able to was Lucifer. They keep an eye out though at the next performance, even occasionally switch from waltz to jazz in hope of drawing him out. Always looking for where their baby brother has gone.
(They wanna tell him that it’s over, really over. That they can finally cry and scream and hold each other now because there’s a future, a path ahead. It has room for all of them under the endless night sky.)
Michaels the type to jump into a lion zoo exhibit and playfully wrestle with them. He Litterally treats them like overgrown cats and the lions only respond by pressing their nose harder into Michaels hand.
Raphaels the type to obsessively play the same duet on her violin over and over until the bow wears thin when finally getting it perfect to which the thunderstorm outside parts way for a rainbow.
Gabriels the type to push his siblings to try out human food and drinks and the second he gets even the slightest positive reaction from one he gets that food in BULK.
Lucifers the type to quietly wait outside his brothers house at night. Knowing he is unwanted in the life they’ve made but still wanting to keep them from anymore harm. Who know when their father might come back to finish what he started.
Nah because Raphael needs to be revived because someone needs to tell Jack to stop dragging his wings on the floor. Since Jack wasn't raised around other angels and Castiel was too busy fawning over his existence to teach him proper things like wing posture everywhere Jack goes he is just straight up DRAGGING his wings behind him, they are not even folded. His halos are also completely still too unlike most angels who halos spin slightly. This has stressed out every single angel that has ever looked at Jack. He NEEDS someone to tell him how to properly be an angel before he ever becomes God because Christ alive the sound of his feathers against the ground sound like nails on a chalkboard and Castiel is just too happy with his existence to tell him. The first time Gabriel lays eyes on him he just cringes like he ate a lemon because all he can think is in his head how he would've never let Cas walk around like that as a fledgling. Michael had to leave the bunker immediately in 15x08 because if he didn't the older brother side of his brain would've been tripped so hard he would've forcefully sat the kid down and given him a whole 2000s makeover montage. Every angel thinks Lucifer hates this fucking kid, not because of the Fall or the Mark of Cain bullshit, but because he's doing the equivalent of letting his kid walk around without any clothes on and everyone is uncomfortable.
everyday i read a little au fic where cas is the youngest of four and his older brothers are michael lucifer and gabriel. where is raphael. 😒😒
