now HOLD UP, i agree with y'all about spider standing up for himself and feeling some resentment towards being left behind when every other child had whole war parties sent out to rescue them,

BUT "Spider is a being of light. I don't think he can hurt anyone just out of hate and not to defend himself." That's not exactly accurate.

Spider gave a pilot blunt force head trauma via fire extinguisher, ripped off another dude's mask and left him to suffocate, and he was grinning ear to ear after crashing the ship and the audience was given visual confirmation that at least a few non-combatants were trapped and drowned in the bottom of the ship. Spider's life was not in danger in any of these situations; if he'd done nothing he would've been perfectly fine. Spider never hesitated to injure and kill humans, not for his own safety, but for the sake of the Sullies. Even Lo'ak, who is only partially human, had a moment of shock after killing a human for the first time, but Spider was shown smiling right after the scenes of the humans getting swept away by water in the ship. Technically, if you count the people he indirectly killed in the ship, Spider has the highest on screen kill count of the young characters.

This is where people mischaracterize Spider and his decision to save Quaritch. It's not that "Spider couldn't bear to leave Quaritch behind because that would be as good as killing him and Spider would NEVER kill anyone!" it's actually more like "Spider can and will directly or indirectly kill people to protect the Sullies, he just couldn't indirectly kill someone he felt like he owed his life to."

Characterizing Spider as a pure "being of light" undermines the importance of his tragic relationship to Quaritch. The importance of that scene is less about Spider's moral compass and more about his relationship to quaritch. Spider wouldn't have hesitated to leave ANYONE else to drown. He put some people in that place to drown himself. It's just because it was QUARITCH, the guy who saved his life twice that he just couldn't make himself leave him behind even though he really wanted to.

Spider is a being of light. I don't think he can hurt anyone just out of hate and not to defend himself.But the kidnapping, the torture, his weird relationship with his non-father father, the hunt for the Tulkun, and the burning of Na'vi homes is a lot to process.And if he is left with resentment towards Jake, Neytiri and the scientists. For not rescuing him. When if EVERYONE would grab guns and go rescue a Sully kid.Even scientists would support.And if after the fight he is taken to the Metkayina and Jake explains that it is "his".Ronal or Tsyreya healing him in the infirmary Jake tells him that he is a "strong boy" and ends up exploding.Shouting what they did to him, the repercussions in his body (nightmares, headaches, etc.) he was willing to die to protect them. And that's not the responsibility of a 16 year old.

I absolutely agree. I do think we forget Spider stood up for himself in the comics. He has a pretty strong sense of right and wrong, and he knows when things are not his fault and he does defend himself to Neytiri. I think what is most tragic in the movie is seeing that strong moral compass warped by Quaritch and his actions.

I think we as a people deserve more beetles and I’m willing to be the change I want to see in the world.
