            “ Yeah, yeah, ‘course. ” Her voice was distracted, eyes glued to her phone screen, but she did take a moment to glance over at her new partner in this English lit project and offer her a sweet smile. What was her name — Rae? Rachel? She didn’t hang out with the Untouchables, but then very few people were ever allowed to be in their orbit, and instead were just the topic of their ridicule. She seemed nice —- and smart. Aimee lowered her phone and turned fully to face her. “ It’s just… don’t you think that lesson was really hard? And this joint project… shit, I don’t feel like I took any of that stuff in. Kyle just texted me to say he’s smoking weed ‘round the back of the bike sheds and I really wanna join him for some first to help chill out a bit, you know? You can come with and then we can just head to the library after that…? ”

    IT’S JUST HER LUCK  to be paired with an airhead popular girl instead of a teacher’s pet who would do all the work, or at least another normal kid.  but as aimee distractedly checks her phone, rae feels her eyes rolling in exasperation.  if the first impression is anything to go by, she’ll definitely end up doing most of the work on their supposedly partnered project.  ❝ i didn’t think it was that complicated.  it’s just shakespeare. ❞  she says, her tone betraying her irritation.  admittedly,  she hadn’t read  as you like it  yet herself, but how hard could it really be ?  aimee seems far more interested in taking a smoke break than finding out.                       &  rae is just considering marching straight back to ms. sands  &  demanding a new partner when the unthinkable happens  —  aimee gibbs, one of the untouchables, invites her, rae earl, to hang out with her.  ❝ oh.  really ? ❞  the shock at being included leaves her staring for a moment, blinking in disbelief.  but then she catches herself, snapping her lips closed  &  nodding enthusiastically, like she hadn’t just been annoyed at the whole idea.  ❝ i mean, yeah, alright.  that’s smart, actually.  we’ll probably study better when we’re good  &  relaxed, anyway. ❞  &  hearing it come out of her own mouth, it almost sounds convincing.
