Hair dye tips
been dying my hair for like 5 years and have had literally every color, so i figured id share some tips. these are mainly for non textured/ straight/ non black hair cuz im white and this is just what i happen to have experience with, but feel free to add tips for other hair types/ textures.
basic dyeing supplies: a rat tail comb. a dye brush. plastic gloves. you dont have to get those fancy dye bowls as long as you have some plastic bowls at home. only use plastic bowls, because metal and ceramic can fuck with the dye.
warm colors and darker colors are easier to take care of and do, so if youre new to dyeing, colors like red, black, and orange are a good choice.
get some hair dye thats not like, the cheapest brand, if you can. it will be brighter, stay longer, and be better on the hair. my fave brand is ion, which usually goes around 10-15 for a tube of dye. this can be found at any sally’s or other hair care store
cover all your surfaces. anything light colored the dye might come in conact with. it might stain. a good covering surfaces, ive found, is cling wrap.
wear a bath robe or a button down when youre gonna dye it so you can take your clothes off without disturbing the dye
or, if you are gonna dye your hair a lot, just consign an old tee shirt you dont care about ruining and wear that when you dye
if youre gonna bleach, put some color safe conditioner in there and leave for about ten minutes before you dye it. this will keep your hair healthier
start with wet hair when youre gonna dye it
if you have long hair, get someone to help you if you havent done it before. go in layers, starting at the roots. dont be aftraid to use tin foil like hairdressers.
if you have shorter hair, do that with no foil^, then put on your gloves and kinda move it around like its shampoo so you make sure to get everything.
dye will stain your skin. if youre clumsy or feel like you might get it everywhere, try putting some vaseline on your hairline and that will keep it from staining.
when its done, use the coldest water possible to rinse it out. it will suck, but the color will look better
dont use shampoo on the hair (or get it wet) for 3 days if possible (depending on your hair needs)
only use cold water to wash dyed hair or it will fade fast. if youre going to use hot water, wear a shower cap
when you do wash your hair, try to get your hands on some color wash shampoo and alternate it with a color safe shampoo. this is shampoo that will make the color brighter every time you wash it. some brands are not super super cheap but ive gone like 6 months at a time wihtout having to re-dye my hair by using this stuff once a week, and a bottle once lasted me a year of once a week.
if your hair is damaged from the dye, use some color safe conditioner and let it sit for a few minutes after each wash.
short hair is your best friend if youre gonna change colors a lot. its cheaper to dye less hair, plus it avoids longterm buildup of damage
dont get your hair wet if youre not gonna wash it
this includes rain. if you cant avoid rain, try to cover your hair and dont wear light colored clothes (it will bleed)
speaking of bleeding, dyed hair bleeds everywhere, so youre gonna wanna get things that will touch your hair in dark colors if you care about how they look. this includes pillowcases and towels, mainly. this goes double for when the hair is wet.
if you want to change the color of already bleached and dyed hair, try to get the dye out without bleach to avoid damage. ways to take out dye or significantly lighten it with less damage include hot water rinsing, vinegar rinsing, clarifying or dandruff shampoo, or baking soda.

If you’re going to dye your hair, be sure to read reviews both about the brand and specific colors. Some brands have certain colours that are not what they appear to be on promotional images.

Sooo I bleached my hair last night with my sister help and it didn't exactly turn out 😬 Most of it processed but the strands at the front of my hair along with my bangs did not and I just want to know if anyone has any advice for how to fix this? Do i just add more bleach? I don't want to destroy my hair this is my first time doing anything to it at all.

Roll the Genetic Dice
My Mom started to go gray in her late 30s/early 40s. She blamed it on the stress she went through with several of my siblings. I just turned thirty and I have a white/gray lock of hair, a younger sister ‘Diane’ is going to be 27 later this year has lots of white strands of hair and another younger sister ‘Jean’ who is 24 has a tuff of white hair (I think my next younger sister Kathy who is 22 has some white but I never asked her about it so I can’t confirm this).
So I told my Mom ‘it’s probably genetic since I want to say under my oldest sister Raquel’s hair dye she has white hairs as well though, if she does my Mom blamed it on the fact Raquel used to get her hair dyed all the time once she started earning money and my Mom said it was probably going white because of the ‘stripping process that were being used to give her different, usually, lighter hair colors (Raquel is going to be 36 on her birthday)
My reasons for sharing this is to say sometimes the roll of a genetic dice is crappy, going white before you turn 50 crappy, and not everything can be blamed on stress, environment, diet, medication etc. Embrace it and it’s okay to be sad about going gray and being under 30, I was and I know my younger sisters feel similarly at different times. It’s okay to get hair dye and cover it up, my Mom did because she was tired of being mistaken for our grandmother when she went out shopping with us and my MIL dyes her hair too.
Dye your hair man! Red is like the easiest color too you might not even have to bleach it

Sometime during highschool, I think when I was a jr or sr? I was hangin out with my cousin and she wanted to dye her hair, she asked if I wanted to as well and I was like “alright, that sounds cool.”
