Frozen II (2019)

i’m still shook over how frozen 2′s major message was about two queens facing the truth that their monarchy was built on the attempted genocide of indigenous peoples and that they themselves are descended from indigenous peoples, and about them using their privilege and taking direct action to address past wrongs regardless of the impact to the current societal structure that was built through genocide. not only that, but the oppression of indigenous peoples and colonisation is inexplicably linked to harmful climate change effects. like if you told me that the sequel to a film adapted from the snow queen fairytale would be a pro-indigenous, anti-colonial, anti-monarchist movie about two sisters discovering their indigenous heritage that also lets you know its okay to find growing older terrifying, i would have laughed in your face and yet here we are!!! and yes its a kids movie and these messages are subtly dressed in magic but its so important to have these messages in kids films!! especially one that is such a pop culture behemoth!!

It’s also the first time that Elsa felt the cold if we're being logical

It Had To Happen To Both Of Them.
It Had To Happen To Both Of Them.

It had to happen to both of them.

I don't know if Elsa expected the Nokk to show up when she was trying to cross the entire Dark Sea but if she wasn't what kind of dumbass energy is that???

About that ending

And I'm not talking about the "separation" (which isn't really one but whatever). I'm actually talking about what happened after Elsa went too far in Ahtohallan (is it how you write it?).

It must be that weird, angsty part of me who's talking right now, but I would have loved if Elsa actually died after discovering the truth about what happened. I completely understand why the forest's spirits decided to let Elsa save Arendelle in the end, especially since all they wanted was for the dam to be destroyed (the real culprit already being dead, it would have been stupid to make the rest of the kingdom pay for his mistakes). But I just can't help myself, it’s good fanfic material !

Let's think about it for a sec :

- Anna manages to destroy the dam.

- Elsa un-freeze but drowns as predicted by the lullaby, the Nokk won't save her even though she is the fifth spirit.

- Anna's the new queen and she will rebuild—with Kristoff and her people’s help—a new Arendelle.

- During those years she will learn how to move on, with Kristoff and Sven by her side; something she struggle with quite a lot in the movie

- After Arendelle is rebuilt, the spirit of Elsa will be completely restored and she will start her new life as a spirit. Most probably without a human form since she's...you know..dead..

- They will be reunited again, Olaf will be back, tears, happy tears, Elsa telling Anna how proud she is of her, Kristoff also crying because this is just too much, lots of tears, happy tears, and then the end.

Maybe a bit too much for a kids movie but it could be a good fanfiction honestly. It has some kind of plot hole (?) That I sadly can't fill since there are some things that i don't fully get yet (like why did Elsa freeze instead of falling into the water and drown after she learned the truth? etc...).

Either ways, I can't wait for people to finally watch the movie and start writing new fanfics!

The French version of Show Yourself is a yikes

I seriously don't know how they manage to change the song's meaning so easily. I tolerated Let it go because of the vocal performance that was really good and powerful but Show Yourself ? Please don't.

And I'm not talking vocally, I'm saying this because of one specific part of the song, the part where Elsa belts out : "I am found" after seeing her mother in Ahtohallan

That part was so powerful I teared up, and I really didn’t expect tears that day.

So why did they think it would be a good idea to translate "I am found" to “Rien ne meurt" which literally means "Nothing dies" ? I mean okay it is nice, it's deep and stuff but it's not really the point of the song.

In show yourself Elsa quite literally finds herself—what/who she really is, and in the French version they made it a kind of reunion thing between Elsa and her mother, and it’s cute, but like I said : it is not what the song was fully about.

The same thing happened with Let it go :

- "let the storm rage on" = "Perdue dans l'hiver" = "lost in the winter/snow".

They kind of did the same thing in some parts of Into the Unknown I'll give some examples again :

- "I've had my own adventure, I don't need something new" to "I've tried adventure, and I lost myself"

- "I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you" to "I don't want to leave"

By doing this they also change the meaning of the songs and it is way too important in a movie like this. The songs definitely aren't bad, if I did not watch the movie in English I would have been okay with all of this, but since I didn't, I clearly know the original message that the writers wanted to portray and it really is way too bad that some people will not get to fully understand all of it.

Guess it's one of the cons of translation
