~⚠ Important Update: FanFiction.net Email Notification
Hey guys!
Hope you’re doing well. 💕
Last post of the day, just sharing this in case you missed it:
Fanfiction.net added a new “opt-in” setting regarding email notifications for new fics and chapter updates. You can read more about this here.
It seems they are experiencing a core issue behind email delivery and this is a temporary solution of sorts. The option is turned off by default, so if you want to make sure you’ll get fanfic emails from fanfiction.net, check your account settings and turn the option on:
Tap the More option if your account information/menu is not visible.
Tap your username to go to Account settings or the Account button.
Toggle the Email Opt-In to ON.
Scroll down and tap Save/Update.
After saving/updating, you should receive a confirmation like this that the setting is saved for the next 6 months:
⚠ The Email opt-in self resets every 6 months. Prior to reset, we’ll receive a notification from the system to update this setting again.
If you’re doing this update on web/desktop instead of a mobile, the steps are very similar. Go to settings using this link and select Yes in the Email Opt-In section and click Save.
If I see any other update regarding this email issue, I’ll share here. The Fanfiction.net team is actively sharing updates on twitter: FictionPress
Wish you all a good night/day! 💕
xoxo
I’ve been without ao3 for too long that I’ve resorted to using fanfiction.net again.
I refuse to stoop to the level of wattpad. Sixth grade me was not prepared. I will not make the same mistake again.
How I use fanfiction.net:
Step one: search fanfiction.net
Step two: type the name of the character you want to read about
Step three: hit search; you will get a differentiating amount of results; use the box labeled narrow results to make your search more specific. It does not filter out ships, characters, and other stuff. However, it can give you fics based on what you choose, such as language, genre, etc..
This can help you @castielssuperhell
Without ao3, I can feel the life seeping out of me. Every passing minute the life force drains from my body, turning me into a sickly grey. My eyes are drooping and I can feel my organs start to fail. I can already see the light, shining so brightly above me. I am only hanging on by the transfusion of fanfiction.net. However, that is not my only woe. I can feel old fandoms creeping up behind me, ready to drag me back into their grasp. Danganronpa got me a week ago, yttd a few days before. Is this the end? Has life come full circle? What will historians think a hundred years from now? What will this crisis be called? The Fall of Creativity? Fanfiction Fodder? The Great Suppression? As a collectivity everyone has united in this detrimental time. We must stick together, offer up other sources to consume media created by talented, life providing authors.

All Fanfiction.net Stories Have Been Stolen
Dear fanfiction writers,
Please be aware that there are fake websites which have mirrored literally ALL FANFICS from Fanfiction.net. As far as I can tell, they are near-perfect mirrors, updating in real-time to FFN’s servers.
All of your stories, your profile, everything has been stolen and copied onto the following websites:
http://www.thebuystock.org/
http://www.talkfictions.com/
http://fictionavenue.org/
http://thanfiction.org/
http://hmofiction.org/
They are making profit off your stories with advertisements. This is called spamdexing. Please report them. Theft of this hefty magnitude, literally millions of stories, should not go unpunished.
Also, do not attempt to log in to any site that looks like Fanfiction.net but is not. In theory, they could steal your email and password!
HOW TO REPORT
Go here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/spamreportform?hl=en
Put in the name of the website (one report each)
Write in additional details: This is a spamdexing mirror site to https://www.fanfiction.net/ and has stolen my profiles and intellectual property.
Click “I am not a robot” and then “Report webspam”
Report more by clicking the link on: Go back to the webspam report form.
Writers and fanfic readers should report these websites that profit off our hard work. Stop plagiarism and art theft!
El’ru’esta
For faradheia, who bid for me in the Fandom Trumps Hate 2021 auction. Thank you so much my dear!
The fanfic is Star Trek AOS (Spirk, aftermath of STID, what if much like Spock Prime’s katra did in canon, Jim’s soul left his body following his death? We all know there’s only one place it could go. What’d happen then?). It can be found here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30086514
and here: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13842157/1/El-ru-esta
I don't think fic writers know how much they matter
Do you know how many times you distracted me when I was hurt or lonely? Do you know how many times a line or a scene from fanfic marked me so much that I remembered years later, even though I can’t recall my own phone number?
Even if the fic isn’t perfect or popular or multi-chaptered… Sometimes there’s just one sentence that changed me.
You, miles and miles away, changed me.
(By trope-specific i mean for example all the slash fics hosting websites, or the nsfw-only ones, etc)
Lots of Reddit threads on FFN recently having trouble.
Last May there were posts about FFN being abandoned. Anyone have links to those?
Some thoughts on the latest FFN hysteria
I see people took an unsubstantiated tumblr post as ~proof~ FFN was about to go down for good. Sheesh. Some thoughts:
Yes, you can copy text from FFN and from every other site that tries to block c&p. If your browser can display it, you can copy it.
OTW/AO3 only import archives with archivist permission. FFN will never grant this. Don’t count on OTW to save FFN if and when it eventually goes down.
No, you cannot post other people’s work to AO3 without permission. If you save copies of things, you’re looking at sitting on a private personal collection and maybe sending out individual fics to people who ask or donating the lot to a library in 30 years.
Add links to the Wayback machine.
Write up your fandom and its greatest hits on Fanlore so later people know what to even look for.
The time for preservation is now because that’s always true. Don’t wait for an emergency. That day will come even if not right now.
FFN hasn’t been good about communicating with users in twenty years. Radio silence is nothing new.
“FFN is dying” hysteria happens at least once a year.
you wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me
True shock is when you see that a oneshot you read years ago now has a second chapter. Or is part of a series.
Okay never mind, ao3 isn’t all fixed because it is being repeatedly shut down by religiously and politically motivated hackers through a “DDOS” attack. So that’s great. Good luck to the ao3 staff that have to deal with this issue, we love and appreciate you!
In the meantime, I have a few suggestions for readers during these trying times. It seems like ao3 has brief periods where it functions, so I would recommend that people find long and complete fics they’ve been wanting to read. Then download them because we have no idea how long this will be an issue, or when the site will be down again. The way I do it is by downloading them as a pdf on my iPad, and then saving it to the files app so they’re all in one place.
If you don’t want to download things you could also just open up a tab with a fic and click the “entire work” button so you have the whole thing opened already. You can do this with multiple tabs.
Alternate sites like fanfiction.net or wattpad are always an option as well, but I’m not that desperate yet.
Hope this helps! And once again, thank you ao3 staff for fighting to keep the site operational.
Before ao3 I used to use fanfiction.net, and switching to ao3 was the best decision I ever made.
Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. I’m so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You don’t have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.
The canon whitebeard pirates: we are lawless criminals of the sea who pillages ships and take what we want, and help nations when we feel like it and make them our family
The whitebeard pirates in fanfics: we are a regimented force who have paperwork and paydays and limited vacation time
Speaking of fanfiction.net, did you know that while it was seven years ago and therefore obviously well out of date (though given the declining traffic over the past few years, that's not the biggest issue), some insane person (positive) on archive.org managed to do the unthinkable and archive a full snapshot of the site despite its infamous unarchivability; I didn't until I went looking for if anyone had good tips on downloading from there easily and found a reddit thread from 2016. It's here. So while I continue to fret about how goddamn difficult archiving the website in full will ever be when it inevitably collapses on us randomly, at the very least we have a snapshot of it as of 2016, in fact.
