We talk a lot about the dead poets society. But think about the original D.P.S., where Mr. Keating was a member. Imagine their poetry , imagine their ideas...imagine what made Mr. Keating as Mr. Keating that influenced the new D.P.S.

Imagine the original dead poets and their genius.

(A drawing of Stephen Meeks from Dead Poets Society (1989). It is a redraw of the character from a screenshot, which is cut out and placed in the upper left corner of the canvas. It is shaded with purple and the style is a mix between cartoony and realistic, with visible lineart. There are some noticeable differences between the screenshot and the drawing - the drawing has Meeks wearing chunky star earrings (left one bring purple, right one being green), there are no highlights except for on his glasses, his gold badges on his suit don't have any detail and his pupils are a different colour. The canvas is a dark beige background, and the drawing itself is outlined with white. To the right of the drawing is a small, white star. To thr left of the drawing it says: "Steven Meeks" (written as "STeVeN MEEKS"). Underneath the cutout of the screenshot, it says: "Re-Draw!" (written as "Re-DRAW!"))

can you tell i suck at redraws and shading...

speed paint under the cut :]

also i apologise for the fact the shaded and un-shaded versions look different, I changed the un-shaded version a little before shading it.

Fun Fact! The movie "Dead Poets Society" came out 5 days after the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia started. :]

AHHH the snoopy cookies are SUCH a good idea!! we love pittsie for bringing the snacks.

i hope you don't mind me adding my own thoughts to your headcanons, they're just so good and i wish to add more to them :)

todd loves the horror movie/s they put on (the orphanage and the human centipede) while everyone else dislikes/hates them. they're all clinging to todd like a lifeline during the orphanage because they're scared and todd's just laughing at them like 'this isn't even that bad!' (they would beg to differ). human centipede goes a lot worse because meeks and knox have very weak stomachs and they both nearly throw up multiple times. todd offers to watch something else but they know he loves the movie so they just smile through the squeasiness

neil and cameron would definitely spend so much time organising the whole thing - clearing their schedules, lining up everyone's off days, figuring out whose house to use, assigning who brings the snacks/laptop/blankets/etc, what movies to watch... also, despite the name, movie night lasts from ten in the morning up until two in the morning the next day since they just want to watch SO many movies. these usually happen at todd's since he has a projector and he's the only one who can convince his family to go out for the entire day. everyone gets to pick out one or two movies to watch. though, these big movie nights/movie days usually only happen during the holidays, and if they're at welton they have actual movie nights (10pm-1am) in someone's dorm and they watch it on meeks' laptop.

imagine some of the modern! dead poets having overbearing/overprotective parents who they have to call everytime a movie ends (cough cough neil and meeks cough cough). they're so embarrassed about it and it's like that 'my mom's calling... hi mom' meme except without the sexual noises because they're either scared of the parent calling or like them too much. meeks accidentally falls asleep during a movie and no one wakes her up because she needs the sleep, meaning she wakes up to ten missed calls and fifty unread messages from his mom and all of his sisters

if they were to watch a really sad movie they'd think they'd be able to tough it out, but by the end all of them are BAWLING. they have to take a twenty minute break to calm down from that. meeks and knox have it especially bad because they're crying so hard they genuinely can't see past the tears (real) and one of the other poets (also still crying) has to hold their hand and hrlp them navigate around the house to get them what they need like water or tissues

they'd all complain that's charlie's hogging the blankets/the couch, but my boy literally HAS to be laying down to watch a movie. in the end they make a compromise - all the other poets sit down first, and then charlie just lays down across all their laps - everyone loves it because it's like a free weighted blanket, especially neil and todd. how they're not sweating under all those blankets i don't know

cameron tries to enforce the 'no talking during a movie' rule but charlie just keeps breaking it, and in the end everyone's talking during the movies. cameron tries to act annoyed but he loves to hear their input or hear them explain something about the movie he previously didn't know

i feel like pitts would be an avid enjoyer of cartoons and sci-fi (like charlie brown and the great pumpkin as you mentioned) and hr and meeks would make a joint effort to make everyone else watch atleast one star wars and tmnt movie, and everyone ends up actually liking it!! they're a little confused from all the context they're missing but they enjoy it nonetheless - besides, pittsie is all too happy to explain tmnt/star wars lore.

meeks would also love sci-fi, but also historical/war films. she would convince everyone to watch forrest gump and i just know some people started crying during that movie (knox). later she talks about this awesome film she saw and everyone's excited to watch it, only to find out that meeks, the polyglot, was hyping up a movie that simply does not exist in english/a language they can all understand. she offers to provide real-time translations but no one trusts her to be accurate/not lie (that last one is based off of a real event at movie night with my friends!)

knox would have to get down on his knees and BEG to get them to watch legally blonde - charlie jokes that it looks like mean girls and knox tells him that it would make it even better! The watch it in the end and everyone is pleasantly surprised by the movie and actually end up really liking it!! they thank knox for making them watch it because it was actually super good (i've never actually watched legally blonde but i've heard its good!!) pitts would make pink snacks for the movie and he'd have to actively fight knox and charlie off because they want to eat all of the pink snacks

charlie would recommend superbad and meeks instantly agrees because he knows ALL the lines of that movie, and everyone assumes that means it's a nice, lighthearted, maybe sci-fi movie!! WRONG, by the end of it everyone is in various states of horror (cameron, pitts, knox, neil), laughter (meeks, charlie, todd), or in love with the movie (charlie, cameron, meeks). cameron has a love-hate relationship with the movie because he loves the drama but hates the vulgarity of the whole thing. (SUPERBAD SPOILERS SORT OF) knox accidentally predicts fogell's nickname (fagell) and meeks and charlie lose their shit over it

cameron gets them to watch a bunch of sitcoms/reality shows and they end up watching some episodes of the office too - everyone has a good laugh and it's a good way to calm down after something like superbad. they all poke a little fun at him for liking these kinds of movies but in the end it's all in good fun and he teases them just as much

neil gets everyone to watch romeo and juliet or the three musketeer (you can decide which versions because i haven't seen a single one) and everyone pretends to be annoyed by shakespeare, but they're all leaning forward throughout the movie (and accidentally smushing charlie in the process) because they actually really like it and romeo and juliet is one of the movies that makes them all cry. neil apologises for making everyone sob and they all assure him it's okay through the tears

once it ends no one has the energy to go back to their respective house, so they just go up to todd's room and crash on his bed with him. if they're doing it at Welton, they'll sleepily sneak back to their respective dorms and then not be able to keep their eyes open during class - mr keating, of course, notices and asks them how movie night was and if he 1. can recommend some movies and 2. if he can join next time because it looked like fun. everyone agrees

that's it!! again, i hope you fon't mind my input to your movie night headcanons :)

Dead Poets Society @ MOVIE NIGHT!!!

Inspired by @random-lil-illing 🙏🏻 I love writing HCs for DPS, nto sure if anyone has ever done this before for movie night but! oh well!

Okay first, I like to think that modern?! Knox- his family expecting him to become a lawyer like his father- once saw Legally Blonde, and fell in love with it. He is trying to convince the other poets to watch it one night. He would love Legally Blonde.

TODD LOVES HORROR I'VE SEEN OTHER PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THIS ON HERE- I CAN'T REMEMBER WHO BUT YES!!!!

Cameron loves dramas- I can see him being like "oh- 90s sitcoms are silly and I don't wanna waste my time watching that-" and then he ends up becoming super invested.

I also think Cameron would like reality television, again, becoming very invested

ANYWAY

It was Neil's idea to have a movie night, perhaps Neil's and Cameron's idea. They both organized it! Yippee!

Okay so- how did they manage to fit seven people, fifty blankets, and thirty pillows on one couch? I'll never know.

carpe couch ig

They end up watching a movie that just came out on DVD/streaming services or whatever.

Meeks insists that they could watch any movie, he could pirate it and all that, I've seen people talk about this too, which is so true.

However, they're using Todd's fancy fancy laptop for streaming onto the TV or projector, and Todd refuses to do that- boy wants NO viruses on his laptop!!

Pitts brings all the snacks!! or makes all of them.... he is snack man

thank you pittsie!!!

Would kill to have a movie night with them

Sometimes, if they know ahead of time what movie they're going to watch, Pitts will make treats themed to the movie!

Oh, they're watching Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin for Halloween? Pitts makes Snoopy cookies. thank you pittsie!!!

If they watch a sad movie, all of these goobers are crying by the end. Especially Knox. Knox is a mess, bless his heart.

Charlie is a couch hog, blanket hog, you name it.

I like to think they'd have monthly movie nights, and they take turns picking the movie

By the end of the movie, someone is snoring.....

that someone is either Charlie or Pitts

Charlie got distracted, Pitts on the other hand got happy with the Snoopy cookies and is now in a food coma. Can't blame the guy though, I'd be snoozin if I had a few Snoopy cookies and a tall glass of milk.

i love making headcanons and, inspired by @blakenation1 making dps headcanons, i wanted to try it out too :)

so, dead poets society going to a mall!!

- mr keating goes with the dead poets to the mall to act as adult supervision since Welton requires the students to have a chaffeur. he just enables their chaotic behaviour though and literally does not act like adult supervision at all - he tells the dead poets that if any other teacher (especially mr nolan) asked, he was watching them like a hawk the entire time (he wasn't, he was watching them like a mole)

- they manage to run into ginny and chris in the mall and the two just sort of. join their group for funsies

- the group is sort of split into three categories: the ones having fun, the ones who are just here for shopping, the ones who want to go home

  - people who are actually having fun: neil, charlie, mr keating, chris, meeks, and todd

     - they actually love the mall because of all the places they get to go and the aesthetic in general (like neil, chris, charlie, and a little bit of mr keating) OR they found a store they really like and are just browsing what they have (todd in a bookstore, meeks with casettes/records/posters, and mr keating at a thrift shop). the latter need to be physically dragged away from the stores they chose to be in

  - the ones who just wanna get their shopping done: cameron, pitts, ginny, knox

     - they don't hate the mall, but they're not giddy or excited about it like the people having fun are. they're still somewhat enjoying themselves because of the people around them or because they found a nice store. either way, they're mostly focused on actually shopping for what they NEED

  - the ones who wanna go home: todd, cameron, a little bit of meeks

     - they get overstimulated outside of their chosen stores very easily :( the food court is loud and bright (they're just like me fr)

- they mostly split up to go to whatever store they want to, but they plan when they're going to meet up at the food court so they can all go together. cameron, ginny, mr keating, and knox all just regularly check their watches to make sure they're not late to the food court meetings while everyone else has to set alarms to remember (especially meeks and todd, since they're so immersed in their respective stores)

- charlie's running around with neil from store to store, browsing each store and buying a couple things from each. they visit the shops everyone else is in to hang out with them a little and talk about what they're buying. sometimes they go to drag the other poets somewhere else because they're spending too much time in one place. neil spends a lot of time with todd in the bookstore, and in turn charlie talks about different records with meeks

- chris will occasionally join along with charlie and neil to talk with the others, but mainly sticks with ginny and knox, who are happy to follow her around as she browses each store. she usually ends up in stored that ginny and knox needed to go to anyway. they buy each other jewellery and other gifts, and point at couple things or plushies and go 'us'

- cameron came into the mall with the intention of sticking strictly to business and simply getting what he needed, but he gave up pretty quickly when he saw just how unserious everyone was being about the whole thing. don't get them wrong, they still got what they needed, but they let themself be taken places too. they even buy the others a couple of things too

-charlie is spoiling EVERYONE, especially neil and the girls. oh, this costs a little too much for their liking? don't worry about it baby, charlie will pay. they can't justify buying something for that price? charlie can! they're eyeing this thing but know that their parents will be mad if they buy it with their money? buy it with charlie's money! charlie is loaded, and what better way to spend his money than on his partners friends? he himself is mainly buying magazines or books, and clothes too. random trinkets too (he buys a mini sax figurine)

- pitts is mainly trying to buy stuff for the radio, along with other projects he wants to start. whenever any of the other poets come around to the store he's in, he'd ask them to visit meeks next and remind her to drink water or to straighten their posture or to take a break in general (modern au! pitts would just call/text meeks to tell her to do so) since it reminds him to do it himself too. he also buys a couple posters and merch in general of his favourite pieces of media to put in his room back at home, or subtly place around his dorm at Welton

- neil is trying not to spend too much of his allowance, and he's succeeding because charlie's buying everything for him, despite his protests. he can't even buy just what he thinks is necessary either, because charlie eill catch him staring longingly at something he wants and buys it. he buys things like flowers, props and very extravagant accessories for future plays and such. and jewellery, so much jewellery. he's also buying things that remind him of everyone else in the friend group, and he and charlie jokingly buy everyone nail polish (which they all end up loving and, by the end of the weekend, they all have matching nails)

- mr keating is buying the wackiest things from the thrift shop - weird and honestly haunted looking decorations? he's taking them. dad-joke shirts? into the cart they go. random trinkets he knows the dead poets will love? buying. he also buys some subtle pride merch, just to let his students know he's a safe space for them. though, he has a feeling they already know, based off of the way they freely talk about stuff like that in front of him

- todd, chris and neil LOVE the perfume (and scented candle) aisle, and they pass by it multiple times while in the make-up store - it's why todd and neil follow her and meeks into there. though, meeks, while occasionally dipping into the make-up store, avoids the perfume aisle like the plague. her senses are extremely sensitive, especially her sense of smell, and the strong perfumes make her sneeze and breathe weird. she quietly encourages the poets in the perfume aisle from the other side of the store

- chris and ginny dip in and out of women's clothing stores and occasionally drag meeks in with them. meeks feels a little shy there but chris and ginny hype her up so much it's hard to feel nervous. they all help each other pick out clothed that suit them and help them feel comfy in clothes they like but are nervous about

- ginny definitely frequents the thrift store too, she just loves the vibes of the clothes there, and she's in and out of the arts and crafts store too. they spend an absurd amount of money in the crafts store (same), and they definitely have stuff they don't need in their bags, but she's happy and besides, charlie covered half the cost, and chris covered the other half. she also buys any necessities she needs, but mainly trinkets from the crafts store

-chris definitely spends some time in the more 'girly' stores (make-up, women's clothes, jewellery, etc.) but she also buys a fair amount of merch for her favourite shows and games (unrelated but i think modern! chris and ginny would play call of duty together - if they can't beat a campaign mission or online round, they ask chet to help). also she buys 'weird' trinkets that remind her of her friends/partners

- also, charlie, knox, todd, cameron, and meeks, the instrument kids, definitely visit the music store a couple of times. charlie brings up the idea of sneaking a piano into Welton and while it's entertained for a minute ot two, meeks eventually rules it out as impossible

- the food court is extremely overstimulating for cameron, todd, and meeks. throughout an all-day trip to the mall, they have three scheduled meal times in the food court (brunch, lunch, befor-dinner-meal). each time they go there they get more and more worn out and by the end of it they're all one inconvenience away to breaking down. cameron and todd at this point desperately want to go home, while meeks, despite knowing that if she doesn't go home now, she'll be throwing up soon but also she wants to stay at the casette store a little longer. still, it's a breath of relief for them all when mr keating finally announces it's time to go back to the campus

- mr keating drops chris and ginny back off at home since they walked to the mall and, with arms full of stuff, they would have a hard time walking back home or taking the bus. it's... definitely a tight fit in the car, and someone has to sit on someone else's lap or on the floor, but they manage. everyone pretends not to notice that both of them get dropped off at ginny's house, even though chris doesn't live there

- by the time they get back to the dorms, everyone has arms full of bags, and all the other teachers give disapproving looks to mr keating, like 'you were supposed to control them >:(' and mr keating, arms also full of bags, most of which aren't even his, just shrugs with a smile. they had fun, that's what was important!

i'm so sorry these are all so long, i love elaborating in my headcanons. and i apologise if some of my headcanons (cough cough transfem meeks) are a little too in your face during this

in honour of the fact that i am still somewhat (?) into dead poets society despite being hyperfixated on fnaf now, have some headcanons about the dead poets and co reactions to fnaf lore.

i just know meeks and pitts would be fnaf fans - meeks, being a fan since the WEEK the first game came out, while pitts got into it around sister location. they just both have different ideas of the lore - pitts would get it from matpat and meeks would get it from first hand sources and gibi's good idea bad idea - meaning meeks can only recount the lore up until UCN, and pitts can keep going until the latest fnaf game. they both still manage to talk for the same amount of time, somehow

ginny would ALSO be a die-hard fnaf fan (being into the games since fnaf 3 - fnaf 4), but like... seasonally. as in, her hyperfixations usually last 2-6 months, and has her fnaf hyperfixation about 1-3 times a year (literally me). knows the basic storyline of fnaf 1-7 and knows some parts of the games after that, but she needs to routinely check the fnaf lore presentation that she, meeks, and pittsie made together to catch up on the details. still she would be up by the fnaf presentation board with meeks and pitts for moral support and to input information about external references (e.g: things the characters/games were based off of)

they'd try SO hard to explain the lore to the rest of the dead poets, but since they're both telling different stories they're all confused to some degree.

todd would be struggling to keep up with both versions of the lore but he'd absolutely LOVE the premise of the games and beg meeks and pitts to help him get into fnaf and other horror games like it (like batim/batdr). he loves horror movies the most but i think he'd be an avid enjoyer of horror games with insane plot too. he wouldn't be as caught up on the lore as meeksie and pittsie but he'd try his best. i feel like his favourite character would be the puppet because of her very poetic (?)/tragic demise and afterlife.

charlie would have no idea what's going on, despite having heard of fnaf before - no matter how many diagrams and references meeks and pitts include the fnaf lore is just way too convoluted (too many dates/two different versions) for them and none of the information retains in their head (mood). that's not to say they're not having fun though - they love all the animatronics and shit and are extremely supportive of this interest despite not understanding a single thing. their favourite character would probably be some variation of foxy (most likely mangle or funtime foxy)

neil wouldn't get a single thing either and he'd be... mildly disturbed by all the murder and dark themes in the game because i think he wouldn't like horror themes that much (plus its his first time learning about fnaf - he had VERY restricted internet access), but he'd still support meeks and pitts (and, later on, todd) throughout their whole explanations. he still thinks it's interesting and LOVES the tragedy of all the characters, especially character like michael and charlie. i think he'd be able to grasp the concept of remnant pretty easily, but the whole 'sharing parts = technically possesing other animatronics' thing would mess with him a little. his favourite character would be michael just because of how TRAGIC and pathetic the guy is

knox would be like neil in the way that he's a little freaked out by the whole thing but tries (key word: tries) to be supportive. he'd heard of fnaf before but he never imagined it to be this complex/bloody. also you know when people judge horror protagonists for doing something stupid? yeah, he'd 100% do that to characters like michael/henry/gregory and everyone else would be like "it's a FICTIONAL, HORROR, VIDEO GAME for a reason, knox!!" would have a hard time with all the lore, but somehow is able to keep track of all the characters. i think he would like phone dude or phone guy best because. i don't know actually i think he just finds them silly (/pos)

cameron would be... very disturbed and concerned for their friends' mental health, is absolutely horrified when meeks explains, in excruciating detail, the whole scooped michael fiasco (she provides scientific input and talk about how it would FEEL for michael in that moment). he wouldn't outright tell anyone that he thinks the whole game is terrifying but everyone would know anyway - still, they keep up with the lore surprisingly well for someone who if horrified by the game, they're only out-bested by todd and ginny (as well as meeksie and pittsie, of course). his favourite character would be elizabeth because he sort of relates to her

chris wouldn't be horrified at all by the game and find it mildly interesting even, but would still definitely be confused by the lore (it's a lot of information - even i can't retain it all that well), and it's not really their style of game anyway. they still show support for the people interested in fnaf and attempts to add her own interpretations during the conversation, even if they end up being wrong. accidentally gets hyperfixated on the toy animatronics and continuosly asks ginny to tell her about them so she can be interested in them properly (her favourite is mangle - they affectionately call it their sick, stray puppy)

meeks would be the one that had to explain the lore to mr keating because she wrote about the tragedy of charlie emily in one of her essays and mr keating didn't know who that was and asked about it. she spends the entirety of lunch and her free period to explain the entirety of the fnaf lore to mr keating. mr keating is mildly concerned about meeks' mental health/well-being and considers calling her mom, but sees how eager meeks is talking about the lore and decides against it. finds the concept very interesting after a while and loves the poetic implications of remnant/william's motivations and all of that. he off-handedly makes a fnaf reference in class a couple days later and all the fnaf fans, and the kids who aren't really fans but know of/about the game just quietly stare at him and each other in horror, trying to figure out who snitched to mr keating about fnaf while meeks tries to sink into the floor

bonus!!

some other teacher (like mr mcallister) walks by the dead poets discussing fnaf lore at an especially gruesome part (more specifically, the bite of '83) and is, understandably, very disturbed and concerned, especially at the way they talk about it so casually. at the next teachers' hangout he brings it up and mr keating just laughs and goes "ah yes, the bite of '83. i remember that." meaning he remembers when meeks told him about it. everyone else thinks this means that the bite of '83 actually happened and the dead poets are just?? casually talking/laughing about an event like that?? it's eventually cleared up somehow but yeah. they nearly end up involving parents before they clear it all up

sorry that it's so long, but i could NOT get this idea out of my head and i needed to write it all down.

why am i crying? oh, nothing - just thinking about how todd and neil never got to spend a holiday outside of school together. just the fact they never got to experience christmas and summer break with each other. just that they only knew each other inside of school and they probably never spent time together outside of school because they never had the chance to.

thinking about how welton handled neil's suicide.

the way mr nolan's speech about neil committing seemed rehearsed, how they barely spent any time talking about him and more time talking about the investigation.

it got me thinking... how many students were there before neil? how many, before him, had done the exact same thing for similar or differing reasons.

how many times had mr nolan have to repeat that exact same speech? or maybe it was more heartfelt with the first student, but as each year, yet another students couldn't take it anymore, mr nolan's speech grew shorter and colder.

maybe they covered it up just as well, or even better than, neil's suicide. maybe there were no inspiring teachers back then, no one that gave the students a reason to metaphorically stand on their desks.

i don't know, i'm just... thinking.

something i love about dps is that in a lot of scenes (especially at the beginning) you can faintly hear someone calling out meeks' name - though, that might just be me hearing things haha

specifically, in the stair scene, whilr the camera is on the left side of the staircase, you can hear someone going "meeks! meeks!!" and when everyone enters keating's class for the first time, you can also hear someone calling out meeks name, albeit much more quietly

if anyone knows any other scenes where this happens let me know :33

either its charlie calling out meeks name (theyre in LOVE your honour) OR, meeks is the universal nerd that everyone in her grade can count on to help them with their homework a couple of seconds before class starts and i love both possibilities
