I just watched the cat returns in theaters and screw yall who rank this movie so low it was MAGICAL and WHIMSICAL and full of SILLY KITTIES
‘whisper of the heart’ is one of my favorite studio ghibli films. its so heartwarming and intimate in a way that automatically brings a smile to my face while my eyes swell up with tears since i know that this is the type of affection i could rarely come across in real life. its less magical and eccentric and more realistic and grounded which honestly made it all the more beautiful to watch. it was a poignant exploration of friendship, young love and the struggle of learning about oneself while also juggling school, homework and exams. i have never related more to any character than i have to shizuku. she is a book-obsessed young middle schooler who’s developed an affinity towards a ‘mystery guy’ who had once borrowed all the books that she’s been reading. there are instances when she feels unhappy with herself and can’t see a future that brings her happiness. she is envious of seiji, the ‘mystery guy’, who seems to be working towards his goals and is extremely ambitious. she feels like she’s being left behind as everyone is moving forward in their lives. from the books to the lack of self confidence and her crush on a guy she met through her books, all of it can resonate with any girl and her teenage experience.
