Moonlight Over the Water

He loved far too easily. How many dalliances had he had burn through the summer? How many winters had he spent picking up the pieces? At 35 he should know better by now. Shouldn’t he? And yet…

“Come take a swim with me cheri,” Andrico whispered against the shell of his ear. His voice was deep and raspy, a velvet blanket against the sand.

And yet.

For all intents and purposes, he shouldn’t love Andrico. The merman was beautiful, yes. And kind when it boiled down to it and noble, he could admit that. But Andrico also did try to drown him when he didn’t honor his ‘pledge’. Not to mention that he followed Julian halfway across the world. Lest he not forget the marriage license that came with him (Portia certainly has yet to do so).  Andrico could be impulsive, selfish, and dangerous. The merman was a supernatural creature with powers he couldn’t even begin to wrap his mind around; someone who had no problem thrusting himself into Julian’s life regardless of the consequences. 

Julian found himself getting up and walking towards the sea as Andrico pulled himself back into the water.

And yet.

The water was warm as he waded through the shallows. This had become a bit of a weekend routine. In the dead of night Julian would drive them out to a beach away from the city to give Andrico a break for his bipedal form. It seemed to lift his spirits immensely. Usually on these midnight rendezvous Julian was content with watching Andrico’s iridescent tail break through the waves. Tonight however he just needed more.

He watched as the merman floated lazily on his back, his deep brown skin almost blue in the moonlight.

“Take me deeper,” he asked before he realized he was saying.

Andrico’s responding smile was resplendent as he quickly pulled Julian into his arms. Julian was a phenomenal swimmer in his own right. He most likely would have made it to deeper water with little issue. However, he opted to wrap his arms around his… devoted one as he heard Andrico once say and let the waters carry them.

Julian loved far too easily and found it far too difficult to care.
