// Tiktok Ban - Tumblr Posts
Here is a link to the US Restrict Act (commonly known as the TikTok ban) as it is currently written.
Please read the actual bill and share even if you do not live in the United States. The precedents this piece of legislation would set would have far reaching impacts on how the internet is used for everyone in the future.
S.686 - RESTRICT Act
Hey!
Not my usual art content.
But...
Heard of the TikTok ban?
It isn't just about tiktok.
The Restrict bill, aka the Tiktok ban, is a bill that essentially gives the government COMPLETE control over the internet. This means they can censor whatever they want with no repercussions.
If you are caught saying ANYTHING the government doesn't like, you can be charged and/or arrested. This means they can silence natives, lgbt+, and more.
Not only this, but this gives them full permission to access ANYTHING WEB BASED with a million or more users. A million is less than 1% of the US population.
Worst part is, this cannot be walked around using a VPN. In fact, using a VPN gives you MASSIVE fines and even jail time.
So what can you do?
If you are of legal age, VOTE THESE PEOPLE OUT.
SPREAD AWARENESS. TELL OTHERS, REBLOG THIS.
Check who your senator or state representative is, AND CALL THEM IF YOU CAN. Emails work, but calls are MUCH MORE EFFICIENT. If you do call, tell them about the bill, and why they shouldn't vote for it. Tell them that if they will support the bill, you will vote them out IN THE PRIMARIES (if you can legally vote.).
Join a protest, or organize one if you can. Remember the police can be a bit trigger-happy, so make sure to wear all black and cover ANYTHING that can reveal your identity such as hair, tattoos, piercings, etc.
And remember..
If this bill is passed..
IT WILL VIOLATE THE FIRST AMENDMENT. IT WILL TAKE AWAY EVERY AMERICANS RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH, REGARDLESS OF RACE, GENDER, ETC.
DO NOT LET THIS PASS!
Reminder that Zuckerberg actively lobbied with Republican PR firms to make TikTok illegal because he couldn't compete with it.
Reminder that for all its faults TikTok has brought tons of awareness to important issues that barely got any coverage until they blew up on TikTok, and more that still barely got any mainstream coverage even after they did.
Reminder that TikTok has become the largest and easiest place for people to come together and organize, and has 150 million active users in the US.
Reminder that congress, especially conservatives, stand to gain a lot by banning it, because it means less people will hear about all the problematic (fascist) shit they're trying to pass, such as the 300+ anti-trans bills, the bills seeking to make abortion a felony punishable by death, or how they're trying to remove the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). They also get to 'look tough' against China.
Reminder that claims of concerns over data privacy are bullshit, because China could literally just buy our data if they wanted it. Tech companies just like and including Facebook collect and sell our data all the time. China wouldn't need to build an app to get it.
Reminder that banning TikTok sets a precedent that Congress could come for literally any other social media they deem 'a threat' and ban that too. Yes, even your personal favorite one.
Reminder that we should care about this and instead of saying "Good Riddance TikTok!" we should be actively trying to stop this violation of free speech and stop handing more power to fascists just because we personally don't like a thing or think it's cringe. This is bigger than your personal tastes.
Please sign this letter from the ACLU to your members of Congress and urge them to listen. There's also a hearing this Thursday on March 23rd at 10am EST in DC where the TikTok CEO will be testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The hearing will be open to the public and will also be live streamed online.
I don't care if you hate TikTok or think it's "cringe." If you all actually hate Facebook and fascists as much as you say you do, then you won't stand for letting them win this fight to ban it.
ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE US!!!!!!
THE TIKTOK BAN HAS PASSED THROUGH THE HOUSE AND IS NOW ON TO THE SENATE!!!!
i'm as tired of finding out crazy information from my distraction outlets as the next person, but this is important.
if you are in the us, please call your representative and tell them you oppose bill s686, the RESTRICT act (linked).
they introduced it and are trying to get it going without public knowledge. it completely infringes on our first amendment rights and goes hand and hand with what happened to net neutrality not long ago. i would recommend taking the time to read it as i have a hard time explaining things, but it basically throws our internet privacy further out the door and puts the government's hands directly into our internet pies. if they don't like something, sucks for us.
the ongoing attempt to ban tiktok probably started this, and if anyone can add a better explanation, please do.
Why Banning TikTok Is Concerning for the Future of the Internet
The banning of TikTok could just be the beginning.
Even if you hate TikTok, note that it isn't just about TikTok. It's about taking control of the Internet. This may not just stop at TikTok. This could expand to other non-US websites as well. Keep in mind that Riot Games is owned by Tencent, as is Trovo Live.
A lot of people make a living off of TikTok. They don't have much of an audience on other platforms, and may not retain a lot of their audience if they migrate to another site.
If you are concerned about the privacy concerns, note that many US-based sites collect data about you.
There are other bills out there that aim to take further control of the Internet, such as KOSA ans FISA.
If you are outside the US, other countries are also looking into banning TikTok. This includes, but is not limited to, Canada, UK, EU, NZ, and Australia.
Since Tik Tok is maybe getting banned, I’ll crawl back here and finally post more! Yay!
The US government recently tried to pass a bill that would make it illegal to boycott. Consumers saying that we refuse to buy from companies that fund or support genocide DOES have power and impact. The BDS movement also isn't an overnight trend. It can last years or even decades. That's the commitment. So what do you mean we aren't doing much? Many stores have had to be closed, and lots of money has been lost for Starbucks and McDonald's, as just 2 examples.
I also already wrote about the dangerous slippery slope of censorship. It doesn't make a difference if you don't like tiktok (even though, just to clarify -tiktok has a plethora of content, which includes plenty of amazing educational content creators too) -it's also where A LOT of people get accessible, up-to-date information about world events -including what has been happening in Gaza. You know -the genocide the US and many fellow countries are vehemently denying. A genocide that is being funded by US tax dollars.
"Emotional thinking" is also a very interesting concept to me because where do you think this passion comes from Congressional Representatives? Who so desperately want to shut down an app more than they want to end gun violence, to push for rent control, free tuition, universal Healthcare...
This defeatist mentality -this apathetic mentality is killing people. Shame on you.
News you've might've missed on Palestine because of distracting events: (@dumbbirchtree on TikTok).
Your feed may be less populated by Palestinian news but that doesn't mean things aren't still happening - in fact things are getting worse.
Keep your eyes on Palestine.
