She isn't a particularly clean person herself, but even Faye knows to keep junk off the mattress. The bed is for sleep or sex, not to be a counter for whatever gets tossed around or thrown aside. That's what the floor is for if you ask her. But Spike can't stand a cluttered floor and has been hounding her to pick her shit up. Considering she nearly sprained her ankle rushing out of the room just the other day, she's been quietly keeping the space tidy. He hasn't said a word but his knowing smirk says plenty and she's had her fill of it.

Which is why she got excited about the book on top of the blanket. Finally she could accuse him of leaving shit out where it shouldn't be!

Though she was curious now what he'd been reading. Normally he used books and magazines as sleep masks to keep the light out of his eyes, but she knew he was actually quite a voracious reader. Most of the novels he seemed to favor were dull to her, but some had merit. She'd read a couple just to try and understand him better.

Picking up the novel, she became immediately distracted when a photograph fluttered to the bedspread. Oops. Oh well, if she'd lost his place it wasn't a big deal and anyway it was his fault for leaving his stuff out to be messed with.

She went to pick up the picture and froze.

She recognized that jaunty closed mouth grin. That untamed hair.

It wasn't Spike. But it was unmistakably a relation. His father, if she were to guess. The other man... Mao Yenrai? Yes, she was certain of that. The woman present was unfamiliar to her and didn't evoke the same Spikeness that the man radiated. Probably not his mother then. An aunt perhaps?

"Whatcha got there?"

Faye gulped and spun around, automatically moving to hide the photograph behind her back. Spike raised an eyebrow at her antics and came closer. He had his hands in his pockets but he took one out to cup her cheek - which was flaming in embarrassment over being caught being furtive - and his eyes, glittering with amusement, held her gaze until he dipped in to give her a kiss.

The next thing she knew, she was laid out atop the bedspread with the novel pressing painfully into her back, and Spike was pulling back from kissing her senseless to sit beside her sprawled form. He was looking at the picture - when had he finagled that from her?!

Panting from their make out session, Faye sat up as well. She shoved the book towards the pillows and leaned against Spike's side to peer at the photo with him. He held it carefully but didn't try to hide it away from her curious gaze.

"You've got the same smile. Same thick hair too," She remarked quietly, fluffing his hair with a hand.

"This is all I have of my past." He said, just as quiet. "I took this from Annie's shop. That's the woman there."

"Is she... Related to you?"

Spike considered that for a bit. "Yes and no. Not related by blood, but she knew me my whole life. She was one of the first people to be... Family to me. After my folks were gone, she and Mao kind of looked out for me. Left me on the streets because they didn't want the Syndicate getting their claws in me as a kid. I didn't realize it then - thought they were trying to abandon me but doing a piss poor job of it because one or the other would check in on me from time to time. And it didn't matter in the long run - I became a Red Dragon eventually after all. Broke Annie's heart but Mao knew it was inevitable."

Knowing Mao's fate, Faye was hesitant to press further but it was so rare to get a glimpse into Spike's past that she had to know.

"Is she on Mars still then? I'd love to meet someone who knew you as a bratty kid," She teased gently.

Spike's smile was sad. "She's still on Mars, but you'll have to talk to her gravestone and I don't think she'll be too forthcoming with answers for you." He sighed heavily. "She was the first person they killed trying to drive me out into the open. I...don't think it was Vicious, more likely the Van. Syndicate leaders get real vindictive when a person tries to bail. They'll murder anyone who so much as gave you a nod on the street."

A subtle reminder of the tragic end she and Jet had narrowly avoided, thanks to Spike's suicidal take down of the entire Red Dragon Syndicate.

She rubbed her right hand in comforting circles on his back and reached with her left to pluck the photo out of his hand.

Spike gave her a puzzled look.

"This shouldn't be a bookmark, you lunkhead. You've got to preserve precious things!" She set the photo on the bedside table. "We can put it in one of the albums Ed has been making. If... If that's okay with you?"

He gave her a slow nod.

Faye smiled. "She'll be over the moon." She and Spike were both well aware of Ed's fascination with their backgrounds - perhaps it had been fueled by their own continual attempts to learn more about themselves and to get closure. Ed tended to pick up a lot from them, though with her own past something of a mystery it made sense. Ed didn't have any photos of her own family, but she adored looking through Jet's albums.

Spike smiled at the thought as well and Faye scrambled to get the camera out of the drawer she'd hidden it in weeks ago after Ed had gotten a little too picture happy.

"Hold that smile! That's the one from the picture. We can put these side by side. The Spiegel Smile," She grinned at him, pleased when he obliged.

"Think it's something that will keep being passed down through the generations?" He asked her then, turning to ease her into lying back down on the mattress. He put a hand on her abdomen, stroking gently with his thumb.

"Mm, I sure hope so," She confided. "That hair is impossible, but that smile is a treasure for sure."
