Modern Fantasy Dwarf Headcanons #1
Dwarves flock to mountain ranges and usually build their capitol in the largest mountain of that range. Though they prefer the company of other dwarves it is not uncommon to find dwarves in mining towns/former mining towns. There is no safer mine than a dwarven mine as they follow regulations strictly and efficiently, unwilling to risk the life of a single worker lest production go down.
Be warned though! If a human works alongside dwarves for any extended amount of time the dwarves closest to them tend to adopt the human families into their own whether the humans in question likes it or not. This caused quite a bit of trouble in the past though not as much as it does in the present.
Dwarves who adopt human families into their own have a tendency to simply take the children of the family (especially those of the human extended family) that aren’t being treated right. This has caused some strain between the communities as this is protected under dwarven law but illegal under human law. Most disputes end up in a mixed race court. Only one dispute has ended up going all the way to the High Council, The Copperbeard Clan vs The Herring Family. (The main reasoning being that the claiming dwarf was still rather young herself). The case is the most recent and set up a wobbly law stating that one member of the human family must contend that the minor would be safest with the claiming dwarf. Despite its more volatile nature as a law it has held strong since its establishment in 1982.
The goal for todays minecrafting is to find a cave system. Cave systems often contain lots of valuable resources, so we can't afford to ignore them. However, there's no reason why we can't explore and exploit these caves in a controlled fashion free of death at the hands of creepers.
THE CHRISTMAS COAL MINE MIRACLE (Dir: Jud Taylor, 1977).
A festive family drama made for US TV.
Set in the mining town of Caufield in 1951, The Christmas Coal Mine Miracle tells the story of coal miners trapped underground on Christmas Eve following an explosion. Centered largely around Matthew Sullivan (Mitchell Ryan), his wife Rachel (Barbara Babcock), their two daughters and prospective son-in-law Johnny (Kurt Russell).
Although claimed by some sources to be based upon a true story, the closing credits read: “The events depicted in this motion picture are fictitious although suggested by the history of mine disasters”. Which particular mine disasters are unclear. I think the movie would have more impact were it based on actual events. Instead what we have with The Christmas Coal Mine Miracle is an intriguing story, although not particularly dynamically told.
Surprisingly, considering it was made in the era when disaster movies were vogue, the focus of the film is not the explosion in the mine, but the relationships of those affected by it, particularly the women. As a result the movie suffers from being overly reliant on dialogue and a little short on action. Originally broadcast on the NBC network, it has the distinct feel of a Movie of the Week, albeit distinguished by a better than average cast. Top billing is afforded to Mitchell Ryan, but further down the cast are the more familiar names of Kurt Russell, John Carradine and Melissa Gilbert.
As earnest young man Johnny, Kurt Russell is, well, earnest. In fairness to Russell the role is not especially well fleshed out. Which is kind of an issue with every character; none are particularly well delineated and the audience never gets to know any of them well enough to be as affected by their plight as they should.
The Christmas Coal Mine Miracle is no Christmas classic. Were it a true story in the traditional sense, rather than vaguely inspired by historic mining accidents, I feel as if I would have warmed to the story a little more and have more investment in the characters. That said, if you stumble across this movie on daytime TV it is worth a look for the decent performances from its likeable cast.

I work in mining, and we have dug so deep that we're getting rocks that formed when my continent was under water. When I'm in the pit, I'm walking over rocks that haven't been exposed to the sky in thousands of years. I'm looking at the layers of the earth!!
Omg so there's this rock type called pillow lava, and it forms when lava comes out of an ocean volcano and cools really fast, so then another little deposit of lava comes out and cools really fast, and it just keeps stacking and stacking, looking like clouds or stacked pillows, right? Well, I literally drove past this rock formation this morning!!! Where I was standing was once a lava deposit from a volcano on the bottom of the ocean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was sitting in a Komatsu mining shovel today and we dug up an old mine shaft!! I could see rails and a wooden ladder and lots of wooden beams and pipes!!!! I could see where the beams had been cut so that they fit together instead of using nails! It blew my mind cause I was in a (massive) hole 690 meters down and there was an old mining tunnel from hundreds of years ago when they only had pickaxe's and shit. Like the wood I was seeing hadn't been touched or seen daylight in forever and we just dug it out!
As if people did that by hand!! 690 meters!!!!
