Moving to London wasnât the hardest part, but adjusting to a whole new work environment was certainly a difficult task but not because the people there were bad â their dynamic was surely different, but everyone was so friendly that you never missed the Danish office. Not for one moment. So when you received text messages from your former colleagues and they tagged you on their Insta stories, you felt bad for not missing your days there.
Between adapting to your new life, having April and Archie around daily, and finishing decorating your new flat, you hardly had the time to miss anything from your old life.
Except him.
He wasnât there anymore, in your dreams. Your nights were as dark as ever â it felt like there was a void and they were meaningless. Probably like every night should be, but not since he appeared to turn your sleep into more than getting enough rest for the next day. The consequence of this was you sleeping poorly and feeling tired all the time because he wasn't there to make you feel safe, and your best friend just assumed it was because you missed (your now ex-boyfriend) Henrik.
âI donât,â you blurted, getting a hand squeeze and a confused frown in return as April placed her cup of coffee down. âI mean, I do. Heâs important, but it was not the same.â
âEvery relationship has its own rough path, love.â
You shook your head, letting her hand go. âItâs not a rough path when thereâs a third person involved.â
Aprilâs jaw dropped as a gasp escaped her lips. âHe cheated?â She breathed, taking both hands to her chest, clearly shocked.
âGod, no! Henrik would never!â
âYou cheated on him?â Her voice reached a note higher than it was appropriate, making a few curious glances make your blood boil under your skin.
âCan you keep your fucking voice down, please?â You clenched your fists, long nails marking the skin of the palm of your hand. âYou know better! Iâm no cheater!â
âIâm sorry,â she shrugged, giving you an apologetic smile. âWhoâs the third person, then?â
âI donât know,â you sighed in frustration, rubbing your forehead with the tip of your fingers as the frown was back on Aprilâs face.
âAre you high?â
âNo, but youâll probably ask that again once I tell you whatâs been happening.â
For the next hour, sitting in a corner in that little cafĂ©, between chocolate muffins and more cups of steamy coffee, you told April the whole truth about your dreams. She listened, smiling when you shared how you felt every time he held you in his arms. Not once did you feel like she was judging you, and you felt a bit foolish for not telling her sooner and getting it all out of your chest â she was your best friend and you always shared everything, no matter how pathetic itâd be. Letting it all out made you feel lighter, maybe even a bit less miserable since you stopped dreaming of him even if you felt like half of you was still missing.
Not knowing his name wasnât a problem for the ever-creative April, who always tried to get something positive out of every situation. With both of you being massive Greyâs Anatomy fans, she decided youâd start calling him McDreamy from now on. It was a bit foolish but seeing how invested she was made your eyes quickly burn with tears you fought hard to stop.
âI honestly donât know what Iâd do without you, Apes,â you reached for her hand again, squeezing it softly.
âDonât be silly. Iâll always be around, and itâs so wonderful seeing how in love you areâŠâ
As hard as it was to admit, you did love him. A stranger, a man you had no idea who it was or if he was real â but that pair of brown eyes and the way the corners of his eyes wrinkled when he smiled, and that constellation of freckles sprinkled across his face⊠made you flutter.
âFunny you mention his brown eyes,â April said, making you frown this time but you remained in silence, waiting for her to continue. âYou always dated men with blue or green eyes, but remember when we were fourteen and you convinced me to draw the man youâd like to marry someday?â
That was the moment you felt the whole place move too fast and everyone around you too slowly. Your hands and the back of your neck tingled, a knot formed on your throat and stomach and you felt the urge to vomit. Memories of a twelve-year-old you were all over your mind, so vivid that if you stretched your arms just a bit youâd be able to touch them and feel them. McDreamy wasnât so unfamiliar to you, his face was familiar for a reason and the possibility of him being a fantasy made you panic.
If it wasnât for a pair of strong arms holding you, your body would hit the floor so fast youâd end up hurt once your vision blurred and it all went black.

Y/n.
That name was all Mason could think of for the past two months, besides all the frustrating situations he found himself in. Missing the woman of his dreams, Chelsea having a bad season and his contract negotiations going nowhere he wanted, Mason hoped he could just run away and start fresh. He made an effort to be rational, think of something thatâd explain why you werenât there anymore to bring the only comfort he had in the middle of his chaotic life. But nothing involving you could come with the word ârationalâ.
He missed you, deeply.
He missed the warmth of your skin and how soft it felt under his touch. Mason missed your smell, he missed your hair between his fingers and mostly, he missed how natural and loving you had been. How he never felt like this for anyone else in his life, and how he found it when he least expected it.
Loving you gave him purpose.
And now you were gone, vanished.
âMase? Are you listening?â Carlotta, his stylist, waved one hand in the air and snapped her fingers, trying to get his attention as she drank down her latte.
âYeah yeah, sorry⊠the Dior collab?â Mason sighed, pouring sparkling water into his almost empty glass.
âIâm supposed to go to their office on Thursday to pick some outfits for you. Would you like to come?â
The Nike + Dior collab was something major, and being invited to be part of it with a few other well-known and influential names got Mason pumped up at first, but it all disappeared once you faded from his life too. You never shared information that was too personal, scared of waking up for sharing more than you should and ending the little time you spent together, but Mason always silently shared his happiness with you whenever something good happened â he shared sadness and frustration too, and without asking anything, youâd soothe him either with your nails softly scratching his skin, making him both relax and get the most delicious chills running down his body, or with your smile. The sweetest smile heâs ever seen.
Mason chewed the inside of his cheeks, not wanting to disappoint Carlotta, but also not knowing how to say no. âTraining on Thursdays is usually tough, maybe we could FaceTime?â
âMase,â he didnât move his eyes from his glass to look at his friend when she called him; Mason just let out a long, exhausted sigh, when Carlotta reached for his forearm and tried to comfort him with a soft squeeze. âIâm here whenever you feel like sharing whatâs been happening.â
Mason nodded, offering her a side smile in return. âI know,â he muttered. âItâs good knowing Iâm surrounded by people who care, I know Iâll figure things out soon.â
âThatâs the spirit!â Carlotta waved her imaginary pompoms in the air, sharing a giggle with Mason. âFaceTime, then?â
âSounds good. What kind of theme will this shoot have?â
Carlotta was ready to answer him when, a few tables away from them, a small group of people tried to help a woman. She groaned, trying to get a glimpse of what exactly was going on, but without any success. Mason leaned to his left, stretching his neck hoping heâd see something but there were so many people around the woman that all his eyes caught was an arm hanging in the air as a man walked her out of the cafĂ©.
He spent another hour or so talking to Carlotta, mostly about this Nike + Dior campaign and the lavish party both brands would throw once all the photoshoots were wrapped, with his own being the last one of a series that were taken with other athletes.
A golden bracelet glistening on the floor when he was about to walk out of the cafĂ© caught his attention, and it was like his soul left his body. Like there was no blood rushing through his veins, but at the same time he could feel it burning under his skin as his heart pounded against his chest â so hard it hurt, that Mason could swear heâd vomit it.
Heâd seen it before. The golden vintage bracelet, with a poppy pendant that his fingers played with so many times before.
In his dreams.

The familiar scent of orange blossom somewhat comforted you because it meant you were home, the dim sunset light forcing its way between the half-closed curtains brought some cosiness to your new and recently fully decorated bedroom. But it didnât take long for anxiety to creep in again, forcing you to shut your eyes and do your best to focus on your breathing as you repeated the sequence that usually soothed your nerves.
Flashes of what happened before you blacked out filled your mind again, along with memories of a distant past when you were a 14-year-old and spent your afternoons at your best friendâs house, making plans for the future and daydreaming about your potential husbands â although you always made clear youâd marry last because your career would always be the main priority. April was the hopeless romantic in this duo, and not so surprisingly, sheâd become a mum just five years later.
Three knocks on the door followed by the most adorable and fuzzy ginger hair showing up behind the door brought a side smile to your lips. Archie was the perfect combination of the sweetest, shy, and sassy child youâve ever seen; the most precious gift April couldâve ever given to you when she asked you to be his godmother and you proudly accepted.
âYou can come in,â you cooed, finally seeing his face. Green eyes sparkled with curiosity and worry, he carefully held a Spider-Man mug in both hands and took short steps toward the bed. âWhat do you have in there, munchkin?â
âItâs hot coco, mummy made it for you,â I told her youâd feel better if it was in my Spider-Man mug,â the six-year-old said, slowly stretching his arms to you. âI told her youâd feel better if it was in my Spider-Man mug.â
A loving smile spread across your lips, the sorrow in your heart being quickly replaced by the joy that Archis always brought into your life.
âYou were right,â you said, carefully sipping the hot liquid. âBut do you know what would make me feel even better?â
His eyes widened a bit when you leaned forward as you were about to share a secret. âHuh?â
âCuddles with my favourite person in the world,â you patted the empty side of the bed, making Archie throw his head back and a cheerful laugh fill the bedroom. He jumped on the bed right after you placed his mug on your bedside table and quickly wrapped his arms around your body.
âAre you going to die?â Archie mumbled, hiding his face in your shirt. You frowned and, before you could say something, he continued: âI was at the Zoo with daddy and I overheard him on the phone with mummy, she said you fainted.â
âArchie, loveâŠâ You cupped his face with both hands, making your godson look at you â his teary green eyes blinked repeatedly, trying to push the tears away, as he sniffed. It was painfully adorable. âThereâs nothing to worry about. Iâve been very tired lately, just working a lot and finishing decorating the apartment. And Iâm feeling much better now that youâre here.â
âDo you promise, momster?â You giggled at the nickname he came up to you: a combination of mum and monster, something you called him quite often. According to Archie, you were too important to be called auntie, and godmother was too long.
âI promise, my little monster.â
It wasnât long until April decided to check on you â she found a half-asleep Archie in your arms, mumbling how he couldnât wait to take you to watch him play football so he could score a goal for you until he finally crashed and low snores fell from his parted lips. The constellation of freckles spread across his face was utterly adorable.
âSoâŠâ April started, sitting on your bed. âWhat the hell happened?â
âI had a flashback to our teen years after you mentioned the drawing.â
âBut why?â She frowned.
âBecause itâs him, Apes. The man I described to you when we were fourteen is the man Iâve been dreaming of, which makes me believe heâs just⊠someone I imagined.â
âHe canât be.â
âApes, I know youâre a hopeless romantic but please,â an exhausted sigh parted your lips. âBe fucking reasonable.â
âI refuse myself, Y/n.â April shook her head, repeatedly, not wanting to believe itâs all been your subconscious trying to fill something, you just didnât know what, because when he showed up for the first time you were in a happy relationship.
âYouâre seriously not helping.â
âWould you describe him again? So I can draw him.â
A knot formed in your throat and it was a hard one to swallow. âI love you for doing this for me, but I wonât. I know it was just my mind playing tricks on me, and end of discussion.â
April pouted, and though you were deadly serious about not talking about it anymore, you knew her all too well. She wouldnât let go, but sheâd remain quiet for a while â you hoped to find something else for her to be distracted because it meant sheâd focus on it and finally leave you alone.
You talked for a little while, mostly about Archie and how well he was doing at Chelsea FCAcademy. April had sent videos of him multiple times, but youâve never attended an open training nor a game in person, itâs always been on FaceTime when you were free from work.
Not far from your new apartment, Mason found himself alone at home â tucked under a heavy blanket and a grey hoodie, body was lazily thrown on the dark L-shaped sofa with only the TV lighting up a living room that was too large for just one person. When he bought the house, Mason thought how incredible itâd be to have his family there as many times as he could and that someday heâd have his own family to fill the space. He hoped his own family would get so big heâd have to buy a new, larger house.
With the golden bracelet between his fingers, poppy pendant shining, Masonâs thoughts were everywhere. He remembered, clear as daylight, when you mentioned in one of the dreams that the bracelet belonged to your grandmother and that the pendant was a gift from your dad before he left and it was your favourite flower. It couldnât be just a coincidence, especially because it was exactly the same bracelet, so he allowed himself to feel all the joy rushing through his veins, warming his heart, body, and soul.
You were real.
âI promise Iâll find you Y/n, whatever it takes.â

âHeâs waking up!â
Mason groaned as his eyes fluttered open. His head felt really groggy, and the fluorescent lights were making his eyes hurt. He was filled with a sense of panic, not knowing where he was as he felt a warm hand slide into his.
âMase, sweetie. How are you feeling?â
Mason blinked a few times, letting his vision focus as he slowly came to his senses. He had an ear-splitting headache, and heâd never felt more worse for wear. Not even after his drunken escapades with his friends after winning the Champions League. He felt like heâd been run over by a truck. His entire body ached, and even the comforting touch, from who he now recognised to be his mother wasnât enough to ease the ache spreading through his body.
âMum?â
His voice was hoarse, as if he hadnât used it in days. His throat scratchy, as he felt someone shuffle on his other side. He blinked a few more times, glancing around the room. He was a little taken aback when he saw his Dad, Nathan and a girl that he didnât recognise.
Nathanâs arm was in a sling and he had stitches over his eyebrow. He looked as terrible as Mason felt. Panic crept up through Masonâs chest, as he slowly realised that he was in a hospital room.
âWhat happened?â
Mason felt like someone had poured sand down his throat, feeling more and more unnerved.
âYou were in an accident, son. You and Woody - you got hit by a drunk driver. Youâve been out since yesterdayâ His Dad explained, his expression sombre and his voice shaky.
Masonâs eyes widened in alarm. He had no recollection of being in an accident at all. He didnât even know what he last remembered, his brain felt like mush, and something felt really off. He glanced around the room again, trying to digest what was missing.
âAn accident?â He echoed.
âOh, Mase. We were so terrifiedâ His mum breathed, her eyes watering with tears as she gently leaned forward, hugging him tightly. Mason hugged her back, but he felt overwhelmed. His head was hurting and it was starting to alarm him how little he remembered.
âYou hit your head pretty hard, son. The doctor said you might have a concussion, theyâll need to run some tests now that youâre awakeâ His dad explained, as Mason nodded, rolling his lower lip into his mouth.
His throat felt dry, and the unease that had begun to bubble in his stomach had now wrapped around his heart.
âI donât - how did - what happened?â He asked, his voice cracking a little.
âYou really donât remember, Mase?â Nathan asked, his eyes were bloodshot and Mason had never seen him look so run down in all his life.
Mason shook his head, as his Dad got up, squeezing his shoulder and leaning down to kiss the side of his head.
âIâll call Lewis and Jaz and let them know youâre awakeâ He murmured.
Besides him, Masonâs mother choked back a sob and he squeezed her hand.
âIâm okay, Mumâ He reassured her, trying to sit up, but feeling his head spin a little too much. His mum rested her head on his shoulder, pressing soft kisses to his head.
âYou scared the life out of us, Mase. Iâm so glad that youâre okayâ She said, her voice trembling.
âAre you in any pain?â
Mason lifted his head from his mumâs embrace, glancing over at the girl whoâd spoken. She was very pretty, but she didnât look familiar. He grimaced, taking a shaky breath.
âYeah, my head hurtsâ He said softly.
âWe can get you some pain relief for that - Iâm so glad youâre okay, Masonâ She said, smiling gently at him.
Mason smiled back at her. She seemed nice, and he assumed she was just one of the medical staff.
He dropped his head back against the pillow, closing his eyes.
He was still in shock, he couldnât believe that he had been in a car accident. He had never been the biggest fan of hospitals, and he just wanted to go home and get back to a bit of normality as soon as possible.
A sudden thought pierced through his chest, and he sat up abruptly, jostling his mother.
âWait, has anyone told Y/N? Why isnât she here?â
There was absolute silence in the hospital room. Mason didnât miss the way his Mum and Nathan exchanged alarmed looks, nor the way the girlâs face dropped.
âY/N?â Nathan echoed.
âIs she okay?â
âMaseâŠâ His Mumâs voice trailed off, watching as the frown deepened on Masonâs face.
âIs she okay?â Mason repeated, his voice rising a little with panic.
âSweetheart, you and Y/N broke up last year...â She explained, her voice soft and tentative as if she didnât want to alarm him as she bobbed her head in the direction of the pretty girl.
Mason felt like heâd been winded of all breath.
He and Y/N had broken up?
âWh- what? Thatâs not possible. Iâd never break up with Y/N. I love her, I was going to marry her!â He spluttered.
Nathan glanced over at Rachel, her eyes welling with tears, as she hugged her arms around her torso.
âMase, youâve been seeing Rach the last couple of monthsâ Nathan started, his voice as soft as Debbieâs was as he gestured to Rachel.
Mason turned to the girl who was looking at him with a sad expression. He felt guilty for upsetting her, but he had no idea who she was.
âIâm so sorry, youâre beautiful and Iâm sure youâre lovelyâ He breathed.
âBut I donât know you, and Y/N - she is the love of my life. I donât know how we wouldâve ever broken up, how I couldâve ever moved onâ He explained, stumbling over his words a little.
Rachel glanced over at his Mum and Nathan, her cheeks flushed pink with embarassment.
âI think I should goâ She whispered.
âOh, Rach. Sweetheart, Iâm so sorryâ His Mum said, getting up to hug the girl.
Mason felt bad for her, she was clearly upset about what heâd said, but she was a stranger to him.
Rachel nodded, before quietly leaving as Mason turned back to his Mum and Nathan.
âMason, that wasnât niceâ His mum admonished, but Mason couldnât bring himself to care.
âIâm sorry Mum, I donât know who she is, and Iâm not going to lie to herâ He insisted.
âI need Y/N - please call her, I need her here with meâ
âMase, youâve been broken up almost a year. I know youâve texted her a few times but I donât think you guys are on talking terms like thatâ Nathan tried to explain, but Mason refused to listen.
âI donât care, I love her.â Mason was becoming increasingly agitated.
He didnât understand why his Mum and Nathan were being so difficult about this.
âAlright, Mason. Calm down, please. All this stress cannot be good for you!â His Mum insisted, taking her sonâs hands in his and giving them a gentle squeeze to try and calm him down.
Mason looked up at them both with misty eyes, he felt overwhelmed, how bad was the accident that he couldnât remember anything?
A new girlfriend, and what he assumed wouldâve been the worst break up of his life?
Nathan huffed out a deep breath, looking over at Mason in pity.
âIâll try and get in touch with her, but you need to rest Mase, and I canât guarantee that sheâll comeâ
Mason nodded, sinking back into the bed as the door opened and a doctor stepped in. Mason chewed on his lower lip, feeling a sense of helplessness as he tried to search for memories, but he was grasping at straws, his mind blank.
-
It had been a gruelling day. You were absolutely exhausted from being on your feet all day. You were a secondary school teacher, and it was exam season, so youâd been run down from trying to provide your kids extra revision classes and supporting them for their impending exams.
You were so tired. You loved being a teacher more than anything. You were good at your job, and for the most part you had a really good relationship with your students, but every now and again, they played up and today had been one of those days. Your Year 7âs and 11âs had been angels, but the rest of your students had been an absolute nightmare.
You couldnât wait to just get home and relax, even though you had a massive pile of marking you still needed to get through. You were thankful that it was almost the weekend, and half-term was around the corner so you could have a break soon.
You had just pulled up outside your apartment complex, when your phone vibrated in your back pocket. You were carrying a load of books as you reached for your phone, answering it without checking.
âHelloâ You greeted, entering your apartment but you almost dropped the pile of books youâd been holding when you heard who was on the other line.
âY/N, hi. Itâs Woody, how are you?â
Your eyes widened as you stopped in your tracks.
The last person youâd ever expected to hear from was your exâs best friend and roommate.
âOh, hi. Iâm okay. Um, how are you?â Your voice was considerably smaller as you made your way into your apartment.
âIâm so sorry to call you like this out of the blue. Um, I donât really know how to tell you this but uh - me and Mase, we got into an accident a few days agoâ
Your blood ran cold, and you sucked in a sharp breath.
âAre you - are you both okay?â
Your mind immediately went to the worst case scenario, your eyes welling with tears when he didnât respond instantly.
âNathan, is he okay?â You repeated your question, your voice rising a little when Nathan didnât respond.
âYeah - no - I - sorry - Y/N, heâs physically fine. Heâs going to need a bit of physio, but heâll be okay. He was assessed by the doctors earlier today and theyâve said itâs retrograde amnesia. He doesnât remember the accident or you guys breaking up, and heâs a complete mess about it. Look, I know things didnât end smoothly, and maybe I have no right to ask you this, but he needs you, right now. Will you come and see him? The doctors are discharging him tomorrow afternoonâ
You felt like youâd been winded. You couldnât believe what you were hearing.
It was true your break up with Mason had been very messy, but even after all this time, youâd never stopped loving him. You didnât think you wouldâve ever been able to. You knew it wasnât healthy, but youâd kept up with him, cheering him on behind the scenes whenever he achieved something, debating whether or not you should reach out when you saw how bad the season had been going, youâd even forced yourself to be happy about the new girl he was seeing, she seemed nice and he deserved to be happy, even though you still wished it was with you.
âI - of course, Iâll come by tomorrow. Are you okay?â You asked, your mind racing at a hundred miles per hour.
âYeah, Iâve got a fractured wrist and I look like shit, but Iâll be okayâ Nathan chuckled, and you couldnât help but let out a breathless laugh with him.
âY/N?â He started.
âYeah?â
âItâll be good to see youâ
âYou too, Woodyâ You whispered, before disconnecting the call.
You stared at your phone for a long moment, unable to comprehend what youâd just been told.
You felt your heart ache at the memory of Mason. Youâd been each otherâs first serious long-term relationship.
You first met him when he came to the school you taught at with Ben to have a training session with some of the students who were aspiring footballers. The school you taught at worked closely with the Chelsea Academy and it had only been your first term working there as a NQT.
Mason had charmed the pants off all the students, and staff - you included.
Heâd spent the entire day flirting with you, so much so that even the kids had started teasing the pair of you. It came to a head when Ben and Mason each formed a team, challenging each other and your students to a game. Mason made a scene with the kids telling them that if his team won, heâd have to take you out to dinner, and your students would get no homework for a week, whichever team lost would have to do a mock paper at the end of the week. Mason beat Benâs team by a single goal, and your students had erupted in excitement.
Youâd been teased relentlessly by your students to give Mason a chance, and in the end youâd said yes to his invitation to dinner just to get them off your back.
You were glad you had.
Even after the way things ended between you, letting Mason take you to dinner had been the best decision youâd ever made. Your relationship had been perfect, he had treated you with the utmost care, and he was genuinely interested in you. It wasnât just a fleeting sexual attraction. Your relationship had always been filled with laughter and understanding, companionship and comfort until it wasnât anymore.
Things had gone awry when your relationship became public. The barrage of hate that came your way was overwhelming. You were constantly being ridiculed on social media. You received numerous DMâs from girls alleging Mason was cheating on you, or accusing you of cheating on him. You had never wanted the world to know who you are so to suddenly have that attention on you was more than you could bear.
Mason had tried his hardest to be there for you, but you were emotionally drained. You tried to look past it all. You trusted him with your life, but hearing that he was cheating on you everyday began to take a toll on your mental health. You just didnât understand why they hated you so much. You withdrew from Mason, you stopped spending quality time with him, and youâd pick fights over things he wasnât to blame for. Mason was of course hurt that you chose to pick fights instead of just communicating with him, and there was only so much of your behaviour he could withstand too. The pair of you bickered non stop until eventually you reached a point where it was too emotionally exhausting for you to stay with him.
The night youâd broken up had been the most heartbreaking experience of your life. You and Mason had both been in tears. Mason had begged you to stay, and as much as you had wanted to give in, you didnât know if your mental health could withstand the pressure that came with being his girlfriend. Every time you thought back to that cold December night, your heart ached remembering how youâd held onto one another, neither wanting to be the first to let go. Mason had broken down in your arms, heâd made so many outlandish promises, telling you heâd give up football, he would do anything to keep you, and thatâs when you had realised you needed to let him go.
You loved Mason too much to let him sacrifice his passion, youâd never forgive yourself for it. Youâd refused, and youâd been cold because one of you had to be. Youâd told him you were done, and youâd never forget the look of devastation on his face.
Youâd left that night and hadnât seen him since.
Heâd tried to reach out to you multiple times but you never responded. Every couple of months heâd still message to check in, and like always you never responded until the last message heâd sent.
The last time youâd heard from him had been a few months back when heâd text you about moving on. You found yourself searching for your phone rereading the text from him.
Your eyes welled with tears as you recalled the day you got that text. You had appreciated him reaching out to tell you, and as much as it hurt to know he was finally moving on, a part of you had always wished youâd come back together one day.
You loved him enough to let him be happy even if it was without you, and youâd done your research on Rachel. She genuinely seemed like a nice girl and she clearly made him happy. There wasnât really much more you could ask for, especially since it was you that had broken his heart.
As you lay in bed that night all you could think about was whether or not he was okay. You couldnât deny that Nathanâs words had your mind reeling. A selfish part of you felt like maybe it was a second chance, but then you remembered he had someone, and as much as you loved him, you couldnât spoil that.
You felt nervous about seeing him again. After your break-up, youâd actively gone out of your way to avoid him. You no longer attended games, youâd even ghosted his friends, with the exception of keeping in touch with Lauren and Sophia, and you knew Mason would often ask them about you, but youâd made them swear theyâd tell him as little as possible.
You knew the entire breakup had been unfair on him, and a part of you wondered how you were going to face him knowing youâd broken his heart.
The stress of it kept you up all night.
-
âIâm so sorry, I wish I remembered more about you. Woody filled in the gaps, he told me how we met, that weâve been taking it slow. You really donât deserve thisâ
Rachel smiled softly, leaning forward and interlocking her fingers with Masonâs, her eyes were sad but she was determined to put on a brave front for him.
âMase, itâs okayâ She whispered.
Mason felt so guilty at how nice she was being.
âLook, from the first moment we met you told me you were still healing from your break up, and we were just friends for a while. You know, you told me all about her. And she sounded so amazing, and I genuinely felt for you both. Me and you⊠you never said it out loud, but it was never going to measure up. I knew deep down you still loved her and if she ever came back, Iâd understand you choosing herâ Rachel explained.
Masonâs heart hurt at how sweet and understanding this girl was. Even though he had no recollection of her, he could see why heâd started something with her. She lifted her hand and stroked his cheek.
âDonât feel bad, Mase. Iâd still like us to be friends, youâre a great person. I just want you to do what feels right for youâ She said, as Masonâs shoulder sagged.
âMy headâs all over the placeâ He admitted.
âIf thereâs anything I can do, Iâm here for you, okay? We were friends long before we were anything else, and youâre a good friend, so I really donât want to lose youâ
âThanks Rachel. Thank you for being so nice about this. I know it canât be easy for you eitherâ He sighed, running a hand through his hair. Rachel smiled, as she opened her arms for a hug. Mason hugged her back tightly, grateful that sheâd allowed him to be open and honest.
âIâve gotta get going, my shift starts in an hour. But if you need anything just let me know, okay?â She said, and he nodded. She pecked his cheek, before grabbing her things and leaving.
In all honesty, Mason hadnât expected to see her, but sheâd texted him and asked if she could come see him, and after spending all night last night talking to Nathan about what he was missing, Mason knew he owed her a conversation.
He sighed, sinking back into his pillows. He had a few hours to kill before he was discharged and he found himself reaching for his phone. He found Y/N in his messages rereading the messages. The last message sheâd sent him had been a few months back, after heâd told her heâd started seeing Rachel. She had told him she still loved him, and seeing those words made his heart flutter.
Nathan had done his best to explain why theyâd broken up, but Mason knew he wouldnât feel at ease until he saw Y/N and spoke to her himself. He read all their messages as far back as he could go, trying to familiarise himself with the situation, but everytime he tried to remember, his mind came up blank.
He felt nervous knowing she was potentially coming to see him today. He just wanted her to tell him everything was going to be okay, that theyâd figure it out together. He felt shy and self-conscious, which he knew was ridiculous since this was Y/N, as far as he remembered, sheâd never made him feel insecure about anything.
He still couldnât wrap his head around the fact that their perfect relationship had ended. He started overthinking, wondering whether heâd done something to hurt her, or if sheâd done something to hurt him. He needed to know, or he thought he might genuinely lose his mind.
The rest of the afternoon passed by in a daze. Mason remained stuck in his own head, trying to piece the last year of his life together. When his parents arrived to take him home, he was quiet, too tired to entertain a conversation with them. His head was hurting a lot and when he finally got home, all he wanted to do was go to sleep, shutting off the outside world and not wanting to be disturbed.
-
To say you were nervous was a complete understatement. You hadnât been able to focus at work all day, and your students had picked up on it. The nicer ones had asked if you were okay, the cheekier ones used it as an opportunity to not do any work, and whilst you were usually really strict, you didnât have the capacity to deal with it today.
As soon as you finished work, you showered and got ready. You wanted to look presentable, but you had to keep reminding yourself that he was seeing someone. Even if his memory was gone, you couldnât ruin something where heâd been happy. You decided to make him some food, his favourite pasta dish that heâd always use to beg you to cook when youâd still been dating.
When you set out on the drive to his house, the same house youâd lived with him in, your were a bag of nerves. Your fingers were trembling, your heart racing in your chest. You didnât even know what you were going to say when you saw him.
Nathan had texted you and told you to come over for 7, and you spent twenty minutes parked on the corner of his street trying to calm yourself down, because it all just felt too much.
When you finally mustered up the courage to drive down to his house and pull up in the drive, it was a couple of minutes past 7. You took a deep breath, grabbing the pasta dish and climbing out of your car.
It felt so weird to be back here, a place you had once called home. It still looked the same from the outside, and your stomach backflipped when you noticed that Mason had kept the little plant pots youâd decorated the front drive with. The flowers were beautiful and blooming, and for some strange reason, a lump formed in your throat at the sight of them.
You knocked on the front door, waiting patiently, facing the street in an attempt to compose yourself. When you heard footsteps from inside, your heart raced even faster.
âY/N?â
You spun around, your expression softening as you realised it was Debbie, Masonâs Mum.
âHi Mrs Mountâ You whispered.
âOh, sweetheart. I think youâve earned the right to call me Debbie after all these years!â She insisted, wrapping her arms around you in a tight hug. You immediately melted into the warmth of her embrace, having missed her dearly.
âItâs so good to see you, Y/N. I wasnât sure if youâd come, but Mase has been desperate to see youâ She explained, as you squeezed her tightly.
âI - Iâm so sorry. When Woody called me, I didnât even know what to think. How is he?â You asked, your voice trembling a little.
Debbie pulled back from the hug and offered you a soft smile.
âOh, honey. Heâs okay, for the most part. But he doesnât remember much. He says he has moments where he recalls memories but theyâre vague. He doesnât remember the pair of you calling it quitsâ Debbie said quietly, her eyes softening as she saw yours water.
âCome in, come in. Heâs in the dining room. His Dad and Nathan have gone to go get some groceriesâ She said, guiding you into the house.
She took the pasta dish from you, smiling when she saw what it was.
âIt was always his favouriteâ You said timidly and she nodded, squeezing your hand.
You couldnât help but look around. It all looked the same. There were still hints of you dotted around everywhere.
You followed her into the dining room where Mason was sat, looking at his phone.
You stood awkwardly, your breath catching in your throat at the sight of him. You hadnât seen him in person since your break up, and the sight of him tore you to pieces. He looked as devastatingly handsome as you remembered. He was a little bulkier now, and his brown locks had been shaved down and dyed bleach blonde, something youâd never expected him to do.
âMase, look whoâs hereâ
Masonâs phone clattered on the table as he lifted his head and his eyes locked with yours. The moment you met his gaze, all your nerves disappeared, and you felt overcome with emotion. The sadness in his expression broke your heart, and before you even had a chance to speak, he collided into you, wrapping his arms around you in the tightest embrace. You sank into him, wrapping your arms around him tightly as he buried his face into the crook of your neck. He was trembling against you, and your heart ached knowing how confused and vulnerable he felt.
Debbie watched the pair of you with a fond smile on her face, before quietly slipping out to give the pair of you some privacy.
You had forgotten what it had felt like to hug Mason. To be in his arms and feel so safe and protected from all your worries and stresses. He still smelt the same, and it made your head spin. When you felt damp tears on your neck, you only clung to him harder, knowing he felt overwhelmed too.
âSh, itâs okay Mase. Iâm here nowâ You breathed, one of your hands reaching up to softly scratch the nape of his neck, something you had always done to comfort him when youâd been together.
Mason couldnât speak, he didnât know what to say. Everything had felt so off and strange, but now that you were standing right in front of him, he felt like he was going to be okay. He never wanted to let you go, breathing in your scent, wanting to memorise it. Your body slotted against his perfectly, and he couldnât believe heâd spent a year without you.
âWhat happened to us, angel?â He breathed, and you felt your heart melt at the old pet name. A couple of tears spilled down your cheeks, as Mason lifted his head, cradling your face in the palms of his hands, and running his thumbs under your eyes.
âDonât cry, pleaseâ He whispered, his face was so close to yours, and it made every fibre of your being hurt knowing he was so close. He brushed his nose against yours, another trait that had been common in your relationship whenever he wanted to comfort you.
âIâm so glad youâre okay, when Woody told me, I thought my heart was gonna stopâ You admitted, unable to stop yourself from reaching out to touch his face. You needed to make sure it was real, that he was actually in front of you.
You forgot about the past year, everything that had lead to your break up and the distance between you. All you could think about was here and now, knowing he was in your arms again.
Mason closed his eyes, leaning into your palm as the two of you stood there for a long while. No words were needed, your touch provided each other with all the comfort that you required.
Eventually, Mason guided you to the sofa. He kept your hands in his, his body facing yours, watching you imploringly as he desperately needed answers. You wanted to tell him, but first you needed to know about the accident and how it had happened.
Mason recounted what he had been told. Heâd been driving home from an event with Nathan when theyâd been hit by a drunk driver. Nathan took more of the physical hit, but Mason had been left with retrograde amnesia, and there was no telling when or if his memory would come back.
Mason held onto your hand the entire time you spoke, and you couldnât stop yourself from running your thumb over the back of his hand, reassuring him that you werenât going to go anywhere.
âY/N, please. I have to know - why did we break up? How could I let you walk away? Did I - did I hurt you? Did I - did I cheat on you?â He asked, his voice so quiet as he shrunk in on himself.
A heavy weight settled in your stomach when you saw how much this had been eating him up, and you instantly shook your head.
âNo, Mase. You didnât. You were perfect and amazing and you made me so happyâ You reassured him.
âSo, what went wrong?â He whispered.
âIt was me, Mase. Everything got too much. The hate and the fans. I couldnât take it. It felt like no matter how much we tried to overcome, there was always something or someone trying to tear us apart. And I couldnât handle it. Mase, I broke your heartâ You admitted, a couple of tears slipping down your cheeks, but Mason was quick to wipe them away, his touch tender.
âWhy didnât I fight for you?â He asked, his voice cracking.
âYou did fight for me, Mase. You begged me to stay, and I told you I couldnât. I told you I was only going to drag you down, and I walked out on youâ You admitted, guilt and shame spreading through your body.
âBut you moved on, Mase. You met someone - Rachel. And I think she made you really happyâ You told him, feeling selfish for dragging up the past. You squeezed his hand, lying through your teeth as you tried to show him that you wanted him to be happy.
âThere is no me and Rachel. I spoke to her already. She told me that she always knew she would never measure up to you. She just wants me to be happyâ He explained, and you felt your heart skip a beat. Youâd known Rachel was nice, you didnât think she was that nice.
âMase, we can talk about this another time. For now, you need to focus on recoveringâ You whispered, as he looked at you. His eyes were bloodshot.
âDonât leave. Youâre the only thing that feels familiar, that feels safe. I know you probably donât want too, but please stay with me. At least for todayâ He begged, and you didnât have the heart to say no, so you nodded.
It was so easy to fall back into an old routine, as if there hadnât been a year of distance between you both.
Nathan and Masonâs Dad, Tony returned home a short while later with all the groceries. Tony had hugged you tightly, letting you know heâd missed you a lot, and Nathan got a little emotional. The pair of you had been super close whilst you and Mason had been dating, and when you broke up, you distanced yourself from him too, and he was just glad to see you again.
It was almost unnerving how little things had changed as you stayed for dinner, catching Mason and his family up on what youâd gotten up to the past year. You didnât miss the way Mason stayed close to you. Neither did his parents or Nathan. You also didnât miss the way they all shared secret smiles.
There was no hiding the fact that everyone had always thought you and Mason made a lovely couple. But you had promised yourself that you were only here to make sure he was okay. You didnât know if you were ready for anything more, even friendship.
Spending time with him made that difficult. It was a lot easier not to miss someone when they werenât right in front of you. Mason hadnât changed at all, he was still the same caring, affectionate guy heâd been when you fell in love with him, and it was like all your old feelings came flooding back. A part of you was even questioning why youâd broken up with him in the first place. But you knew that was dangerous, and you had to make sure you didnât get too close. The last thing you wanted to do was hurt him again.
It was pretty late when you decided to head home. You could tell Mason was upset, and you had all your fingers crossed that he wouldnât ask you to stay, because you didnât know if you had the strength to say no, but thankfully he respected your boundaries. Heâd walked you to the door, neither of you willing to be the first to say goodbye, and when you turned to look at him, your heart fluttered in your chest at the way he was looking at you.
âI know you said that we havenât really spoken a lot since we broke up, but can we please try to be friends?â Mason asked softly, and you sighed, ready to say no, but there was something in his expression that stopped you.
You were lying to yourself if you said you didnât want to be a part of his life again, but you were scared. You didnât know if you could be just his friend when you were still in love with him, and he was clearly still in love with you. A part of you was scared that heâd get his memory back, and realise he loved Rachel more. You didnât want to stand in the way of his happiness. Not when you were the one that had broken his heart in the first place.
âI donât know if thatâs a good idea, Maseâ You whispered, but he shook his head.
âPlease, Y/N. I still need you in my lifeâ He pleaded, his lower lip quivering.
Instinctively, you reached forward, brushing your thumb across to soothe him. You let out a little sigh when he pressed a gentle kiss to the tip of your thumb.
âOkay, Mase, but you have to tell me if youâre not comfortable with anything, okay? The last thing I want to do is hurt you againâ
The way his eyes lit up made you feel giddy inside.
âNot having you in my life hurts meâ He breathed, snaking his arm around your waist and hugging you tightly, as you drew your lips together in a pout.
Mason had always had a way with words.
âCan you come over tomorrow?â He murmured in your ear.
âI have a lot on at the moment, but Iâll text you, okay? I promiseâ You whispered, pulling back from the hug. You saw the disappointment, and you instantly wanted to drop all your plans for him, but you knew that wasnât a good idea.
âOkayâ He said softly.
âIt was really good to see you again Maseâ You whispered, and before you could overthink or regret it, you dived forward brushing your lips against his stubbly cheek in a sweet kiss, before scurrying away to your car, not wanting to give him a chance to react.
Mason watched you go, his heart thumping in his chest. He felt a sense of peace settle over him. There was so much that was uncertain, and it still bothered him how little he remembered, but he was relieved that you were willing to be friends.
-
A week had passed, and you and Mason had been texting back and forth. You hadnât been lying when you said you had a lot on at the moment. In between helping your kids with revision sessions, marking their mock papers and helping out with parentsâ evening, you hadnât had a moment to yourself.
It was safe to say that you were relieved it was finally the weekend. You checked in on Mason everyday, making sure he was keeping up with medicine, and you badgered Nathan too, to make sure he was taking care of himself and not running around after Mason.
You had been putting off seeing Mason, knowing that all it would do is give you more inner turmoil. It had been hard enough to move on when you werenât seeing him, and talking to him all the time was sending you down memory lane.
You were trying to be careful, but you couldnât help it. He was your weak spot, and all you wanted to do was tend to him. You were proud of yourself for holding out for a week though, and you were finally going over tonight to see him. His parents had gone back to Portsmouth on Wednesday, so he and Nathan had been managing on their own.
Youâd decided to cook them a nice homemade dinner. The pair of them were both hopeless and you were pretty sure theyâd been relying on Uber Eats since Debbie and Tony returned home. You thought theyâd appreciate the gesture so you got to work making your special pasta.
It was nearly half 7 when you finally headed out, making your way to your old house. You were filled with nerves at the thought of seeing him again, despite the fact that youâd been speaking frequently. You just found it easier to control your emotions when he was on the other side of the phone.
When you arrived, the boys had been sitting together in Masonâs games room playing a game of Warzone. You had rolled your eyes at the sight of them, deciding to set the food down in the kitchen. It made your head spin a little, the familiarity of watching them play. It was something you used to do all the time. Mason had held out his arm for you, gesturing you to come and sit with them, and encouraging you to take part.
Youâd always preferred FIFA though because you were better than Mase, so when you challenged him to a game, he grinned. The three of you were giggling away reminiscing about the past.
After, youâd sat down and had dinner together whilst Mason and Nathan pestered you with questions about what youâd gotten up to the past year. You told them about your achievements at school. As well as being a History teacher, you were applying for the role of Head of Pastoral Care. You loved helping your students, and you didnât miss the way Masonâs eyes glinted with admiration of you. You told them about your family, both of them keen to know how your parents were doing. It was nice, and wholesome. You thoroughly enjoyed the dinner with them.
Once everything was cleared up, Nathan excused himself giving you and Mason some time alone together. You had made the pair of you a cup of tea before curling up on the sofa and putting an episode of Game of Thrones on in the background.
Mason was resting his head on your shoulder, the pair of you sitting in comfortable silence as you watched the show. It soothed you a little to do something so mundane with him, something youâd done a thousand times before. The feel of him so close to you brought you peace, and in truth, you couldâve fallen asleep like that.
âHowâs the amnesia?â You hummed, as Mason lifted his head turning to look at you.
Heâd been sneaking glances at you all night, but every time you looked at him, he would look away, his cheeks flushing pink. You couldnât help but find it endearing.
âI remember things a bit better. I remember we broke up, and I remember I was gutted. I just donât remember the small specific detailsâ He explained, looking a little downcast.
âThe doctorâs said that it will come back slowly with time. Sometimes I have dreams and when I tell people about them, I realise that theyâre actually memories. I dreamt of you last nightâ He admitted, sheepishly.
âOh yeah, what did you dream?â You asked him softly.
A fond smile settled on his face.
âI dreamt of the first time I met you, all those years ago when youâd been fresh out of uniâ He smiled, nudging your shoulder.
âAnd all the kids were teasing me because you were such a flirtâ You giggled, the memory making you smile.
âThat was a good day, wasnât it?â You hummed, as he shuffled a little closer to you.
âWe had a lot of good days, didnât we? It wasnât all badâ His voice was considerably softer as he turned to look at you with an unreadable expression. You felt yourself melting underneath his gaze as you nodded.
âYeah, there was a lot of good. We made each other really happyâ You admitted, feeling warmth spread through you as he leaned a little closer.
A part of you had been scared of this happening.
âI miss you, Y/Nâ He breathed, his eyes finding yours and you could see the sincerity in his expression. You knew you should pull away, this wasnât a good idea. He was so vulnerable right now, and even though his memory was slowly starting to come back, you had agreed that you would be just friends.
âMaseâ You started, but when he tipped your chin up, his thumb caressing your jaw with a featherlight touch, your heart skipped a beat. He leaned forward, brushing his nose against yours.
âThank you for coming back to meâ He whispered.
You couldnât help but lean into his palm, your eyes closing as he continued to caress your skin. It was easy to just surrender yourself to him, the comfort he brought you was unparalleled.
When your eyes opened again, his face was so close to yours.
A face you saw in your dreams every night, a face which your mind had memorised. Every last mole, the bridge of his nose, his soft lips and even the freckles that were smattered across his cheeks. You sucked in a shaky breath, feeling overwhelmed by how close he was to you, the scent of him and the way he was making you feel.
âMase, we shouldnâtâ You breathed, knowing you had to be the stronger one between the pair of you.
âWhy not?â He asked, his voice innocent, his breath fanning across your lips. You shivered, your eyes flicking up to his once more.
âWeâre broken upâ You whispered.
âThat can be easily remediedâ His voice had dropped to a husky whisper.
âMaseâ You protested, but your tone was so weak, you didnât blame him for not taking you seriously.
âI shouldâve never let you go, Y/N. I shouldâve fought harder to keep you. I know it was a lot, the public and the hate. But Iâd protect you, Iâd do better this timeâ He vowed.
You felt a lump form in your throat at how passionate his words were, and when a single tear slid down your cheek, Mason leaned forward, kissing it away.
He kissed your cheek again, before his lips trailed to the corner of your mouth. Your breath caught in your throat, the familiarity of his lips sending you spiralling. A part of you wanted to give in, if you just tilted your head, youâd be kissing him, and the temptation was so strong. Your eyes fluttered closed, but even if Masonâs memory of the past year was gone, yours was still there, and the heartache from the initial break up had been too much for you to bear.
âWe canât, Maseâ You breathed, leaning back before he could close the distance. Your eyes opened in time to see the disappointment in his expression.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to make you uncomfortableâ He whispered, and you shook your head.
âItâs okayâ You said softly.
âBut maybe I should goâ
It was so difficult not to blur the lines when you were alone with him, and you knew he was struggling with it too.
âI donât want you to goâ His voice was small, and you hated how quickly you wanted to give in.
âI should thoughâ You told him, as he reached forward tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear.
âIâm sorryâ He whispered, and you shook your head.
âNo, donât be silly. Itâs fine, Mase. Itâs just an adjustment, right?â You tried to offer a smile, and even though he smiled back, it didnât reach his eyes.
You needed to get away from him, you knew that for certain because if you didnât, you would do something stupid and give in to him. And there was a reason your relationship had ended. It wouldnât be fair to either of you to relive the past.
âItâs getting late, I should probably head homeâ You murmured, as Mason nodded, his eyes downcast.
You mustered up all the willpower you could to get up. Mason followed, helping you into your jacket and walking you to the door.
He really didnât want to let you go, and he knew heâd messed up by pushing your boundaries a little but he couldnât help it. It felt natural to want to hold you, and kiss you. And he knew you well enough to know you were struggling with it too. What he couldnât wrap his head around, was why you wouldnât just let him in.
As he hugged you goodbye, he gave you a gentle squeeze, knowing that if he wanted to keep you, he couldnât keep putting you in situations like that. His heart felt heavy, he thought it wouldâve been okay to have you back in his life, but he didnât quite realise how difficult it would be to be your friend when he was still in love with you.
-
âOh, please come! Everyone misses you. You havenât hung out with any of us in foreverâ Sophia pleaded as she held your hands across the coffee table.
You huffed out a breath, knowing she wouldnât relent until you agreed to come to Kaiâs birthday party tomorrow night. Youâd been thinking of excuses to miss it all week because you knew Mason would be attending, and ever since that night at his house, youâd decided to put a bit of distance between the pair of you.
Another couple of weeks had passed, and you still texted mostly everyday. He called you every night before bed, keeping you company whilst he played games and you marked your studentâs exam papers. You hadnât made any plans to see him. You knew that you wouldnât be able to resist him, and as much as a part of you wanted to just forget all about the past and try again with him, you were scared.
Youâd confided in Sophia about your worries, and sheâd tried her best to reassure you. She knew firsthand how difficult the break up had been for you, and she also knew how conflicted you were with the current situation.
Sheâd always wanted you and Mason to find your way back to one another and she firmly believed this was a sign that you were meant to be.
You never had been able to say no to Sophia, and thatâs how you found yourself at her shared home with Kai the following night. A lot of the Chelsea players had been there, and over the moon to see you.
Ben had practically lifted you up off your feet, twirling you around and letting you know just how much he had missed you, before passing you along to Christian, Reece and Kai, all of whom had been overjoyed to see you. You couldnât deny it was nice to hang out with them all again. Despite being Masonâs ex, they treated you with love, because theyâd all been your friends too.
Youâd been mingling with everyone, catching up with Christian on his plans for the summer when Mason arrived.
Your breath caught in your throat at the sight of him. He looked unreal. He was dressed in some brand you didnât recognise. He had a massive smile on his face as he went around greeting everyone, and when he saw you, he practically lit up. He beelined his way towards you, happy to see you after so long.
âI didnât know you were going to be here tonightâ He smiled, and you nodded, trying not to blush.
âSoph forced me to comeâ
Masonâs eyes twinkled as he checked you out shamelessly. The dress you were wearing flattered you greatly, and black had always been his favourite colour on you. He slowly dragged his gaze up, his eyes meeting yours once more.
âYou look amazingâ He breathed.
âSo do youâ You whispered.
He always did this. He had a way of melting the rest of the world around you, making you feel like no one existed but the pair of you. You wanted to look away from him, but the tension between the pair of you was too thick for you to cope with, and when you noticed Sophia going into the kitchen, you managed to excuse yourself and follow after her, needing some breathing room.
âI canât do thisâ You complained, throwing your hands in the air as you threw Sophia a glare when you saw the smirk on her face.
âY/N, relax. Why are you bent on being unhappy?â She asked.
âYouâre not helpingâ You rolled your eyes at her, but she just giggled, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.
âBabe, how much longer are you gonna pretend like youâre not madly in love with him? Everyone can see it, even him. I know youâre scared, but itâs Mason. Heâs the love of your life, youâre getting a second chance, so why are you letting him slip through your fingers?â
You opened your mouth to respond, when a new unfamiliar voice interrupted you.
âOh, Iâm so sorry-â
You and Sophia both turned around, and your eyes widened as you recognised the girl standing in front of you.
You immediately felt enveloped with shame as you met the eyes of Rachel, the girl Mason had been seeing before his accident.
âNo, oh my gosh. Iâm so sorry that you had to hear thatâ You blurted out, watching as her cheeks flushed pink.
âUh, Iâll give you two a minute.â Sophia said, awkwardly.
You didnât know where to look as you were left alone in the kitchen with Rachel.
âYou must be Y/N, Iâve heard a lot about youâ She smiled, kindly, and you flushed.
âHiâ You breathed out.
âListen, Iâm so sorry. I can go if youâre not comfortable with me being hereâ You started to ramble, but she shook her head.
You couldnât get over how unbelievably pretty she was.
âHey, itâs okay. These are your friends too. I didnât mean to eavesdrop, but I just wanted you to know, me and Mase - it wasnât anything serious. He told me from the offset that he was still trying to heal over you, and we went on a few dates. Weâd only been seeing each other for a couple of months, and even then, I knew he liked me, but he was always going to love you. In a way, I think that accident was a blessing in disguise. I donât know the details of why you guys broke up, but I know that he loves you, more than anything. Iâm kinda rooting for you guys to get back togetherâ Rachel told you.
You felt absolutely mortified as tears strolled down your cheeks. You were here crying in front of a girl that you didnât know, a girl that had been dating your ex. You could see why he had liked her. She was so lovely.
âItâs just hardâ You admitted.
âMaybe, but love isnât meant to be easyâ She said softly, reaching forward and squeezing your hand.
âYou should let yourself be happy. I know this is the first time we met, but I feel like I know you from the stories Iâve heard. You sound like an amazing person, and you deserve your second chanceâ She reassured you.
Of all the people that were genuinely making you reconsider whether you should try again with Mason, his ex had been the last person you expected to give you the push you needed. You felt a flurry of appreciation towards her, and before you could regret it, you pulled her into a hug, squeezing tightly.
âThank you for taking care of himâ You whispered.
âDonât be silly, heâs my friendâ Rachel giggled, squeezing you back.
âAnd thank you for being so niceâ You whispered, smiling at her.
She shook her head, smiling back at you as you both pulled away from the hug.
âUs girls gotta stick together, right?â
-
Mason knew you were avoiding him. He tried not to let it bother him, he was here for Kaiâs birthday after all. Heâd been standing with Ben and Christian, the three of them catching up, relieved and happy for Mason, that his memory was slowly but surely coming back.
âHowâs things with Y/N?â Ben asked, when Christian excused himself to grab a drink.
Mason sighed, running a hand over his hair.
âI donât know, Chilly. Weâve been texting a lot, but tonightâs the first time Iâve seen her in a while and she practically ran away from me. I just donât get it. I know she can feel it too, but she insists on fighting itâ Mason said, miserably.
âI think sheâs scared, mate. Itâs clear as day she still loves youâ Ben reassured him, and Mason sighed.
He had felt like his heart was going to burst out of his chest when heâd seen you earlier. Youâd looked breathtaking and heâd wanted nothing more than to kiss you.
But given the amount of time that had passed since his accident, he had slowly started to remember how your relationship ended, and whilst it was frustrating to see you pulling away, he remembered how broken youâd been when youâd decided to end things. He knew you were scared of getting hurt, and hurting him again.
Mason had already made up his mind, he would take any amount of pain if it meant he could have you back.
âI wish Iâd never let her go in the first placeâ He admitted, and Ben sighed, offering him a sympathetic smile.
âI know, bud. But if itâs meant to be, you know you guys will find your way back to one anotherâ He reassured him, and Mason nodded, resting his head on Benâs shoulder.
âHeads up, Mase. Rach and Y/N just met each other in the kitchenâ
Both Ben and Masonâs eyes widened in alarm as they turned to see Sophia approach them. Even though Mason knew both girls were lovely, he felt a little uneasy about his two exes interacting.
âOh, look. Here they come nowâ Sophia pointed out, as the three of them turned to see you and Rachel walking out of the kitchen. Mason watched as you whispered something to Rachel before slipping out of the living area.
Rachel spotted Mason, Sophia and Ben and beelined her way over.
âYou should go check on her, sheâs going to the bathroom to fix her makeupâ Rachel said, squeezing Masonâs shoulder.
âOh - I - uh - okayâ Mason stammered, before handing Ben his drink and rushing after Y/N.
âYou reckon theyâre finally getting back together tonight?â Sophia asked Ben with a raised eyebrow.
âI hope so. What did you say to her?â Ben asked, shrugging his shoulders at Sophia and directing his question at Rachel.
âI told her she deserves to be happy, and she should stop pushing him awayâ Rachel said, curling her hair behind her ear, before excusing herself from them to go say hi to someone else.
âYou know, I always had a thing for her, and sheâs such a sweet girlâ Ben hummed, as Sophia snorted, raising an eyebrow at him.
âI donât think Mason will care, that boy is obsessed with Y/Nâ She snickered, as she and Ben both broke out into a fit of giggles.
-
You were sitting at the top of Kai and Sophiaâs staircase, your elbows resting on your knees, as you were deep in thought, wondering what the right thing to do was.
Rachelâs words kept repeating in your head. You were denying yourself the chance to be happy because you were worried about what other people were going to say. And you were so tired of fighting your feelings. Itâs not like Mason made it easier for you.
Your heart skipped a beat when Mason appeared at the bottom of the stairs. He wobbled a little, holding onto the staircase as he climbed up, sitting down on the seat below yours.
âYou okay?â He asked, his voice soft.
You didnât answer him immediately, instead taking a moment to admire him. His cheeks were a little flushed, his pupils darker than normal.
âAre you drunk?â You teased, a small smile playing on your lips.
âI had one beerâ Mason defended, shrugging his shoulders.
âYou donât even like beerâ You told him, shaking your head with an amused expression.
âYouâre right, I donât. I really regret itâ He grimaced, running a hand over the top of his head.
You couldnât help but burst into a fit of giggles at the look of disappointment on his face. Masonâs heart sang with joy at the sight of you laughing, and he couldnât help but join in.
âI met Rachel beforeâ You admitted, a few moments later once your giggles had calmed down.
âI saw - thatâs not awkward. My two exesâŠâ He said, his voice going high-pitched.
You could tell he was trying not to act curious but you knew him well enough to know he was dying to find out what youâd talked about.
You giggled, nudging him with your shoulder.
âNo, she was really nice. I liked her. I can see why you liked her tooâ You told him, looking back down at your knees.
âI remember her a bit moreâ He admitted.
âShe was really nice. I hope she finds the right guy, she deserves to find the best love everâ He nodded, and you smiled.
You were both quiet for a moment, before Mason finally mustered up the bravery to hold your hand. It looked so inviting, and it was just begging to be held, and perhaps it was the alcohol that was running through his system, but he couldnât stop himself from reaching for you. You squeezed his hand back, trying to compose your thoughts.
âY/N, we need to talkâ He said, his voice low and sending shivers down your spine.
You lifted your head, and when you saw how close he was to your face, your heart ached with longing. He leaned forward, brushing his nose against yours.
âI knowâ You whispered.
You closed your eyes as he pressed his forehead against yours, breathing you in and savouring this moment with you.
âI really want to kiss youâ He admitted, and you had to suppress your shiver.
âMaseâ The way you dragged out his name made him smile, as he brought one hand to tip your chin up.
âYou donât want me?â He murmured, biting back a smile.
âYouâre drunk, Maseâ You sighed.
âIâm sober enough to know I love you, even after all this time. Even after the accident, and Rachel and every other thing, I have tried to move on, I have tried to get over you. But Iâm stuck on you, Y/N. I love you, I love you so much that I donât know how to breathe without you. You occupy my every thought, you always have done. Even though you push me away, Iâm still drawn to you, and I donât know how much more of this I can take. Itâs you, baby. Itâs always been you. Itâs always going to be youâ His eyes had watered from his declaration, and your heart had skipped a beat at his words.
âMase, we agreed to be just friendsâ You tried to interject, your voice barely above a whisper.
âI donât know how to be just friends when everytime Iâm around you I just want to hold you, I want to kiss you. I want you to be mine. Donât you feel it between us? Am I crazy? Am I imagining this?â He pleaded.
You couldnât answer him, a lump forming in your throat.
âTell me, Y/N!â Mason insisted.
âI canât!â You burst out, shaking your head as you pulled out of his grasp.
âYou think this is easy for me, Mason? We didnât break up because we fell out of love. We broke up because I felt like I would never be good enough. We broke up because I felt like I was dragging you down, like I was the one holding you back. I regretted letting you go every single moment since, but I knew it was the right decision for you. I have loved you for as long as Iâve known you, Iâve loved you for every minute of every day for the past four years. My heart is yours, it always has been. But I am trying to protect yo-â
You gasped as Masonâs lips came crashing into yours. Every single thought that had been racing through your mind was gone from his passionate, searing kiss. His lips lingered against yours, the force of the kiss taking you by surprise.
The kiss didnât last nearly as long as you wanted it too, and when Mason pulled back, you stared at him with a dazed expression.
âMase, I-â
âYouâre mineâ He said with such sincerity, you shivered, before pulling you in closer and kissing you again.
This kiss was a lot more gentle, and you felt yourself melt into him, your arms winding around his neck, as you pulled him closer to you. Youâd been fighting this for weeks, and youâd known from the first moment that Nathan had called you and told you about their accident that it wouldâve led to this, and you didnât want to fight it anymore.
Youâd forgotten how good it felt to kiss him, how easy it was to get lost in his embrace. Mason lifted you from the step youâd been sitting on, and pulled you into his lap with ease, his arms sliding around your waist to hold you against him. His tongue roamed your mouth with ease, both of you sighing in content at how familiar, how perfect it felt to finally kiss again.
âLetâs start over, angelâ Mason breathed against your lips in between kisses.
You trembled in his lap, goosebumps rising on your arms from how good it felt to be this close to him again.
âLet me love you, Y/Nâ Mason persisted, his eyes meeting hours, his expression eager, his lower lip jutting out in a soft, adorable pout.
A choked sob escaped your lips, but he just cradled your face in his hands.
âI know youâre scared, but Iâll take care of you. I promiseâ He vowed.
You stared at him for a long moment, your heart felt like it might burst out of your chest with love for him.
You were tired of holding it in, tired of acting it didnât hurt like hell that you couldnât call him yours.
You gave in to your heart.
âI love you, Mason. Itâs you, itâs always been youâ Your voice cracked a little, his touch soothing away the pain you felt from pushing him away for so long.
Mason made a noise in the back of his throat, his eyes shining with tears at finally hearing you admit your feelings.
âItâs always gonna be me, yeah? No matter what happens, we get through it together, yeah? Iâm never letting you go again, Y/N. We can go as slow as you like, but I need you to know youâre mineâ
And then he was kissing you again, and it was the most beautiful kiss youâd ever experienced in your life. Mason poured his heart and soul out into you, as you clung to him. Memories of the thousands of kisses youâd shared before this flooded through you, as for the first time in a year, you finally felt like you were home.
You didnât know how long you sat there, basking in his warmth and all the comfort he had to offer. When you both finally pulled away, you were both shaking and breathless.
Mason let out a little giggle, his lips swollen, his eyes glinting with unfiltered joy.
âI canât remember the last time I felt this happyâ He murmured, brushing his nose against yours, before peppering soft kisses across your cheek.
You smiled, closing your eyes, enjoying the feel of his lips against your skin.
âI love you, Mason. Iâm so sorry for pushing you away, I just didnât want to hurt youâ
You were scared, you would never deny that. But the pressure on your chest was gone.
âY/N, not having you in my life has hurt me. No matter what happens, weâre going to figure it out together, okay?â He reassured you.
âOkayâ You whispered, smiling as you met his gaze, butterflies fluttering in your stomach at the thought that after all these years he could still make you this happy.
After everything, you knew Mason would take care of your heart, and you promised yourself youâd take care of his. You didnât expect it to be easy, but you knew that as long as you had each other, it would be okay.
You dipped your head into the crook of his shoulder, filled with content that after a long year apart, youâd finally found your way back home.

Summary: The womenâs Euros lead to secrets being spilt. How will Declan take the news knowing his best friends have been dating behind his back?
Warnings: Fluff, swearing, implied smut, Euro heartbreak (still not over it)Â

â
The summer of 2021 was one the English would never forget. For the most part, the summer was full of happiness and memories but the night of the Euro final against Italy was one to forget. England fell at the last hurdle, cheated out of the win if you analyse the referee's decision but it was over now. You were there to witness everything. Growing up with Mason and Declan meant you were there to watch their happiest moments on the pitch and their heartbreaking moments.Â
Youâd gone down the same route as they had, football. You were scouted by Celtic and quickly moved to Scotland, leaving the boys for several years. Thankfully the women's league started later than the men's so you were always able to travel back to England to support the two and theyâd do the same at the end of the season.Â
Eventually, you left Celtic and moved back to England to join West Ham, much to Mason's disgust. Declan was enthusiastic, he always bragged to Mason that he got to spend more time with you, always telling him what youâd been up to during training and your free time but the truth was Mason already knew that. Youâd been dating Mason behind Declan's back for about a year now.Â
It all started after the Euro final. Mason was heartbroken and wanted you by his side. You didnât feel guilty about leaving Declan, he had Lauren by his side, Mason had no one like that. You sat on his bed, cupping his face as you wiped his tears away with your thumbs. Mason looked up at you through his glossy eyes, even when his heart was being ripped into a million pieces he couldnât help but fall in love with you even more. He already lost the biggest game in his life he couldnât lose much more. Mason leant forward and placed his lips onto yours, you kissed him back and the rest was history.Â
âHowâre you feeling?â Mason ran his fingertips along your skin as you both lay in bed together. It was the morning of the womenâs euro final. England was set to play Germany in a mere few hours, a game in which the men lost and the women had never won.Â
âBit nervous.â You looked up at him through the sunlit hotel room.Â
âYouâll be fine, youâve scored in every game so far.â He smirked. âMight as well be the female Messi.â A small laugh slipped from your lips as you laid your head down onto his bare chest, your hand reaching up to trace his tattoo.Â
âMaybe one day.âÂ
âYouâve got the height for it.âÂ
âOh piss off Iâm not that short!â You slapped his chest causing him to laugh and wrap his arms around you, keeping you close. He kissed your forehead as you fell silent. A small sigh fell from your lips, catching his attention. âWhatâs on your mind?âÂ
âWhen are we gonna Dec?âÂ
âSoon.âÂ
âHow soon?â
âIn the next few weeks.â
âWhat about today?â
âAbsolutely not.âÂ
âWhy not?â
âBecause today is about you, not me and if he throws a fit saying shit like âitâll ruin the friendshipâ then thatâll ruin your day.â
âItâll ruin my day not being able to celebrate with my boyfriend if we win.â You hit back at his words.Â
âYou can celebrate with me.â He moved your head out of your face. âBehind closed doors when heâd not around.â Rolling your eyes you pushed yourself up from his grasp, getting out of bed and heading to the shower. Mason frowned at your actions, pouting like a child as you left him alone. âDonât be in a mood with me!â He called out.Â
âIâm not!â You hissed back, turning the shower on before locking the bathroom door.Â
âDo I get to join?â
âNope.â
âWhy not?â He threw the covers off his bare body and made his way to the door, attempting to open it. ây/n lets not have an argument.â
âWe arenât having an argument.â
âYouâre acting as if we are.â
âYour eyes deceive you Mount.â
âYou only ever call me by my last name when youâre teasing me or when youâre pissed off and the door being locked is a big sign to me that youâre annoyed at me.â
âYou know why.â
âOh, so we are having an argument?â
âA disagreement Mason.âÂ
âLook I want to tell him but weâve kept it for so long⊠thatâs whatâll hurt himâŠâ
âAnd whoâs idea was that?â Your tone turned sour at his excuses.Â
Mason knew you had a point. You wanted to tell Declan after a few months. That was the original agreement. Make sure things worked out first and if they didnât youâd split and it would never be spoken about again and Declan would never have to know. Evidently, things didnât turn out like that and Mason and you had already begun to look at properties to move into together, Declan would have to find out soon. Mason was the one who wanted to keep it from him, the lies just built up and it was getting too much. The pressure of the Euros was weighing on your shoulders and the constant lying to your best friend was getting too much.Â
You opened the bathroom door, your hair dripping wet as you wrapped a towel around your body. âWe tell him tonight, I donât care what the result is and if you wonât tell him then Iâll just tell him myself, without you.âÂ
âYou look really hot -â
âStop trying to change the subject.â Glaring his way you pushed past him to gather your England kit, making sure you had everything in your bag for the game ahead.Â
âJust stating a point.â A smirk grew on his lips as he followed your movements. He came up behind you, hands on your hips, pulling your back into his chest. Kissing the side of your cheek he started to trail light kisses down your jaw and neck.Â
âMaseâŠâ
âHmm?â
âWe need to tell him.â
Mason let out a heavy breath but didnât stop his actions. âWe will.â He gripped your hips tighter.Â
âWhen?â
âTonight but if you lose weâll tell him tomorrow, deal?âÂ
âDeal.â You leaned your head back on his shoulder. âAs much as I would love for this to continue I have to get to work.âÂ
âI can be quick -â
âDonât I know it.âÂ
âOi.â Mason spun you around so your eyes met his before he lightly pushed onto the bed. He hovered down so his lips ghosted yours. âYouâve never complained before.â
âTo youâŠâÂ
âYou havenât even won the match yet youâre already acting cocky.â
âLearnt from the best.â You pecked his lips lightly as he laid you down. âYou might wanna hurry up if you want to do thisâŠâ
âYou know I think this is why we lost the EurosâŠâ
âSorry?â
âI didnât get a good luck shag before I played.â He smirked.Â
âYouâll get one for the World Cup.âÂ
âI bloody better.â Mason smashed his lips into yours, his free hand coming up to remove the towel as he climbed up onto the bed. Needless to say, you were late for the first briefing of the day.Â
â
Mason and Declan sat alongside the rest of the England boys who came to support the lionesses. Both of them wore an England shirt with your name and number on the back, proudly displaying their pride for you. The first half hadnât gone to plan, England had picked up two yellow cards and was yet to score a goal, then again on the brighter side, Germany was also yet to score.Â
Mason watched as you quickly stormed off to the changing rooms the moment the half-time whistle blew. The brunette turned to his best friend who was beckoning him to follow him out to the foyer for a drink. Â
He needed to tell him.Â
Mason followed him, nerves creeping up inside him and not just because of the game. âYou alright?â Declanâs voice grabbed his attention.Â
âYeah.â He gave him a light laugh, trying to play things off but Declan knew him too well. âJust nervous for the game thatâs it, wanted them to be at least a goal up by now.âÂ
âTheyâll be fine, we know our y/n, sheâll score.â Declan grabbed a drink for him. âBut I know that isnât what youâre nervous about.â He stared straight at the Chelsea boy. âWhatâs wrong?â
Mason took a deep breath, sipping on his drink as he felt his heart pounding. âBefore I tell you, promise me you wonât take it out on her. She wanted to tell you -â Mason didnât even need to continue for Declan to put two and two together.Â
Huffing, Declan cut him off. âHow long?â
âDec -â
âHow long Mase? How long have you kept this from me? You two are my best mates and yet you lied to me, how long?â
âSince we lost the Euros.âÂ
âSo a year then? You two lied for a year? Who else knew?â
âOnly our families, I promise you Dec only they knew and not all of them know. My parents and hers do and thatâs really it.â Declan didnât say anything, prompting Mason to keep speaking. âShe wanted to tell you but I didnât. I was scared that youâd turn your back on us. We planned to keep it secret until we were certain it would work out between us but I got worried, not her. y/n wanted to tell you but I didnât so if you want to blame and be pissed off at someone be annoyed at me.âÂ
Once again Declan was silent, contemplating on what to say but the sudden cheer of the crowd caught their attention. The second half was starting. Without uttering a word Declan moved past his best friend, screaming your name with the crowd as he took his seat.Â
A defeated expression fell onto Masonâs face as he took his seat. He knew heâd done the right thing for you, maybe it was a bit late but things are always better delivered late than never but he couldnât dwell on it too much now, you needed his support.Â
Thankfully for him, Toone scored allowing England to take the lead. Mason and Declan both roared at the goal but the feeling didnât last long as minutes later Germany went and equalised. They watched as you let out a string of swears from your lips, throwing your head back in defeat, you and the rest of the nation really didnât want to lose this game after the men's final.Â
The game ended up going into extra time and the nerves were getting to you all. It felt like the clock was moving slower with each second. No one wanted it to go to penalties. Declan spared a glance over to Mason who looked as if he was losing his mind. Not only was he riddled with fear of losing his best friend but also feared his girlfriend would lose this game like he did.Â
âDo you love her Mase?â Declan suddenly spoke.Â
âWhat?â He turned his attention away from the game. âOf course I love her, I wouldnât still be with her if I didnât. Dec Iâd do anything for her -â
âThen why didnât you tell me?â He looked hurt. âMase weâve been mates for years, not just me and you but y/n too.â
âShe wanted to tell you -â
âBut you didnât so she kept it a secret for you.â
âYesâŠâ
âBreak her heart and Iâll break your kneecaps when we play next.âÂ
A sigh of relief left Masonâs lips, a small laugh fell from his mouth as he spoke. âThank you and again I am so sorry.â
âJust donât wait to tell me that youâre marrying her the day before you put a ring on her finger.âÂ
âI wonât.â
âAnd donât wait to tell me sheâs pregant when sheâs going into labour although that might be a little harder to hide.âÂ
Mason laughed again. âI wonât, I promise.â
A sudden string of boos rang out from the crowd, grabbing their attention. Both boys looked over to Germanyâs goal. You were on the floor, holding your arms out as the referee pointed to the penalty spot.Â
âThatâs your girl Mase.âÂ
âSheâs given a penalty to us.â
âAnd you werenât even looking when your girl was fouled,â Declan smirked over at Mason.Â
âShe doesnât know that.â Mason kept his attention on the game. âWhoâs taking it?â
âNot trying to scare you Mase but y/n is stepping up to it.â
âWhat?â Despite being in the boxes, Mason stood up to get a better look, not like it would do much but now we could clearly see that you were standing opposite the goalkeeper with the ball in front of you. âFucking hellâŠâ He took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. It wasnât that Mason didnât think you could do it, you were more than capable of taking a penalty. Youâd scored most of the ones youâd taken but after the final, heâd been in heâd never want that guilt to fall to you if you missed.Â
The sound of the crowd filled your ears but you silenced them. That was one of the first things youâd learnt whilst being at Celtic. The crowd there was one youâd never heard before but Wembley was a different story. The entire nation was watching as the referee blew her whistle and you had to take the penalty. With a deep breath, you took one last look at the goal and ran up and kicked the ball. Aiming the ball in the top left-hand corner you watched as it hit the back of the net, slipping through the keeper's hands. In the last few minutes of extra time, you had scored and put England in the lead with minutes to spare.Â
The feeling was something you knew you would never feel again for a while. You ran to the crowd, screaming with happiness as they screamed back. Your teammates jumped on your back, ruffling up your hair and screaming alongside you. You looked up to the box where Mason and Declan were sitting and gave them a smile, although you couldnât see them through the crowd you knew they were smiling down at you.
The whistle blew signalling the game was over. You and the rest of the girls fell to your knees, the tears streaming down your faces. It had finally come home. Mason and Declan made their way down the stairs and towards the pitch side with the rest of your families.Â
You and the girls were singing along to Sweet Caroline when you caught the eyes of Mason. He ran over, pulling you into his arms, picking you up as he spun you around. Not caring that a camera was right beside you he crashed his lips into yours, cupping your face as he tried his best to not get too carried away on national television.Â
âYouâre the best in Europe.â He smiled.Â
âMaybe the world soonâŠâ You pushed his brown hair out of his eyes, looking up at him with a soft smile. Your eyes fluttered over to Declan who was taking in the atmosphere. âYou told him then?â
âI did. Iâm sorry I made you keep that from him for so long, I was an -âÂ
âShut up Mount.â You pecked his lips. âItâs done now.â
âThank you.â
âIs he okay about it?â
âHe is.â
âSee,â You smiled. âI told you that heâd be okay with it.â
âHe said heâd break my kneecaps if I fucked up.â
âWell then Mount, better stay on my good side because we play for the same team so heâll definitely know if you upset me.â You teased him.Â
âI think the colour blue would suit you better.â He smirked.Â
âYou think so? I was more thinking the colour redâŠâÂ
His eyes widened at your words. âNoâŠâ
âMaybe contract talks have already taken placeâŠâ
âAnd you didnât tell me?â
âShould have told Declan sooner.â You kissed his cheek. âBesides, who doesnât like a bit of rivalry?âÂ
