I love it he cares so much idk how people can make him seem so mean
I really adored this interaction with Sherlock and Mariana in the The Retired Colourman part two. He was so patient and gentle with her. This honestly solidifies my love for this version of Sherlock ♡
My Mariana design bc she deserves so much love<3
My Thoughts on The Three Students
Is anyone else worried about Watson's drinking? Like throughout the entire episode he is either craving a drink or being drunk/hungover. I wonder if this will be mentioned more later on. With all the Moriarty forshadowing it is very worrying to see Sherlock be put back into a school setting. With Watson longing for his "glory days" from university and Mariana being so over it Sherlock doesn't comment much on the conversation. We know Sherlock got his old principal fired, and that may have been Moriarty but we don't know yet. Seeing Sherlock not only not want to go to this school setting but also not want to give this speech is so real.
I loved the Mariana love in this episode of course. Watson is seeming to get some (maybe negative) development with his drinking. I wonder if there is a reason for his habit as it hadn't been this notable in previous episodes. He also didn't rewrite the speech as he was supposed to. You can hear the part he read out being verbatim the words Sherlock reads througout the episode. Seeing Watson make such irresponsible choices is common, as he isn't as "graceful" as Mariana or Sherlock, but seeing him fumble something he knows is important to his best friend just to go party is notable.
Sherlock's unsteady tone of voice when talking about public speaking is such a contrast to his usually so firm tone. It is very interesting to see this development for him. I loved the little bits and parts of the speech we hear throughout the episode. He sounds so out of his element it is so interesting to see these sides of him. As Sherlock (even to Watson and Mariana) has been such a firm almost constant character to them. His voice is often very steady and flat, and he is very consistent in his routine and mannerisms. Seeing him so vulnerable is interesting not only to us as listeners but to Watson and Mariana as well.
Him not understanding if his experience is abnormal or not is also so real. He is so used to being the outlier that he is concerned about his feelings being rational or just being another thing to distance him. That is such an accurate feeling too, being autistic I also struggle to know if a feeling is typical or divergent. We've had a lovely Watson focused case in Shoscombe Old Place and I am very excited to see a Sherlock based case here. I have loved the epiosode thus far.
The Three Students Pt 2
I made my brother watch this episode with me and we both liked it alot. He hadn't seen part one but was still able to follow along without it.
He said it was "an exquisite yap session" for what thats worth. Sherlock literally publicly shaming these students is very funny I think. Him making Oliver admit to roleplaying for his alibi but not making any of the other students admit to what they were doing was so dirty. Like then he literally calls him out as being embarassing thats crazy lol.
I love how we were able to get the important clues througout the story. Upon my second listen I was able to hear every important clue as it was given to us (and given to sherlock) and it was very nice. The twist of it being Kaylie was nicely done as well. It make sense and honestly shes so real for that. I commented on my previous post about how Watson's alcoholism should be taken note of. We haven't heard much of Sherlock's drug usage and im sure Watson would want to cut those parts out of the podcast but he didn't cut anything related to it in the earlier episodes. We know Watson rarely cuts anything out of the podcast so it makes no sense why he would start cutting the drug usage out whenever he left it in on previous episodes. How much of Watson's alcoholism is going undocumented? Either way I would like to see more of it. Seeing character flaws and like issues (like his ptsd and drinking) would be very interesting to see. Sherlock's improv speech was very nice. My brother thought it was a nice thing to see him solve a case and explain it in such a way that captivates audiences while teaching his methods. Seeing him get into his zone and regain his confidence was thrilling. During and after the speech he acts as though he is being only entertaining and not teaching and that is so sad. Like the entire time he interjects with comments like "if you gain anything from this" and stuff of that nature. Like how can he truly not believe he is teaching? Does he not see how this narrative style is enlightening? Is it because he sees these things as interesting and not teaching? Idk how to word this properly but he naturally is able to explain and teach in such a way that he himself is not even aware that he is teaching. It reminds me of the og books, the audience learns of how to deduce (like how to tell someone's height by the length of their stride and their shoe size and how too estimate height by seeing where they naturally write on a surface). The stories use narrative to teach in ways that you don't even notice you are learning until you see yourself viewing the world differently.
Like in the beginning of the first part Watson attempts to use Sherlock's methods on Archie. Sherlock unknowingly has taught Watson to be more perceptive and has done so by just explaining his reasonings whenever asked. Sherlock did not intentionally do so to teach Watson to emulate his methods but it is done naturally. Sherlock has a natural teaching ablility. He does so in a way that even himself is not aware he is teaching. He is simply being himself and others are learning from that.
Mariana <3
I've seen a few posts about people saying Mariana is portrayed as a "stereotypical millennial" or like a basic woman and I figured I'd give my takes on that.
People are mad that Mariana likes Harry Potter and Taylor Swift? Like tons of people like those things so what makes that strange? Is it a stereotype or is it just a character that enjoys popular things? Watson likes sports and shit but I don't see people calling him a "stereotypical white man." Why is it the one female lead is being slandered for enjoying popular media but the others aren't?
People don't talk about Sherlock being an autistic stereotype bc his comfort food is a basic pasta. People don't talk about Watson being basic for his taste in media yk. I find it strange that the one female lead is getting these complains but not the others.
Now I can agree with the fact that the creator of Harry Potter is problematic, but that doesn't mean you can hate her as a character for that. In all fairness, Harry Potter is a popular ip and it isn't suprising to hear it mentioned in media. To act like people cannot be a fan of these medias in unrealistic. Same with Taylor Swift it is strange to call her basic for being a fan of a popular media. If you have issues with these medias that is one thing but to hate a fictional character for mentioning/liking them is strange.
The Red Circle Pt. 1 (SPOILERS)
First part is up, let’s see what we’re dealing with!
Oof John’s already voicing his frustration over the tech issues; wonder how bad it could be
I both love and hate the sounds of John cleaning the mic, it sounds like he’s digging deep into my brain
Okay, we’re just at the end of a case?
Oh yeah, the mic is definitely bugging out
“My dear companion Doctor Watson” UGH HOW SWEET
What is happening?? WHAT IS GOING ON??
“This is going to be an 8 or 10 parter” OH REALLY John??
NONE OF THE ‘CASE’ RECORDED, that’s actually hilarious
“But was the best adventure yet” how great was it that it makes SHERLOCK say that??
Not them all reenacting the ‘case’ HAHA
Yeah John, Sherlock needs to get back to hanging upside down-WHAT
Oof Sherlock really said “you waffle so much that sometimes your random words help me solve the case” (he’s not wrong tho)
THEY DO MOVIE NIGHTS!!!
Awww Mariana’s meeting up with a friend from Hudson’s, how nice!
God, the irony of voice actors being bad at acting is incredible
Sherlock WOULD be the person asking questions during movies (and pointing out inconsistencies)
I love how you can still hear the ‘movie’ going on even when Sherlock & John are talking
This little exchange
John: “Door knock”
Sherlock: “Very observant”
John: “Is that sarcasm there?”
Sherlock: “Exceptionally observant”
John: “Well done”
Sherlock: “Thank you”
Ah!! Chipmunk voice jump scare!
Sherlock: “Is that right, John?”, John: “It’s right big guy” JOHN CALLED SHERLOCK BIG GUY
I feel John’s pain, I HATE having to explain movies to people
OH GOD NOT A REAL-HOUSEWIVES-ESQUE REALITY TV SHOW
“Good God, put the gangster film back on” SAME SHERLOCK
Awesome how Mariana and Imani are already fans of the reality show
“Why do women like that kind of stuff? It’s cruel, it’s vicious, destructive-KILL HIM, SHOOT HIM IN THE EYE”—I will never get tired of this ongoing joke with John starting a point and immediately contradicting it at the end
The ‘bullets through the bum and balls’ exchange shouldn’t be as hilarious as it is, yet here we are
Oooooh, so THIS is how we get the Red Circle case (hopefully it’ll make up for the ‘unrecorded case’)
THE MUSIC?! HELLO??
“The game is afoot” YES MARIANA WE GET TO HEAR YOU SAY IT
Oof John that mic is REALLY messed up
And that’s it for part 1! I was NOT expecting a hilarious start for this one. I can only imagine what ‘case’ we missed (lol), but Red Circle sounds interesting enough! Also, it’s cute hearing more domestic moments with the main trio. I mean they have MOVIE NIGHTS!! The fanfics were TRUE! Anyway, this is a fun start and it’s just the beginning of our 4-part adventure, so stay tuned….
Does anyone feel like The Red Circle has a completely different vibe than the other episodes? Like not in a bad way theres just a tone shift i’ve noticed.
I of course love the domestic moments and idk if we are getting more or if I am just noticing more, but the new case is definitely much different than the others.
it being a 4 part case gives us much more room for domestic moments. They don’t need to get RIGHT into the case because they have 3 more episodes to resolve it.
Idk theres just a much different vibe to this case and I can’t place it properly.
Yes i can see this too
Watson is not getting as many ig "serious" moments as opposed to the others. He isn't getting as much development anymore. I cannot tell if this is intentional or not but he seems to just be more present focused as opposed to future focused. He is just thinking about the present and how to have fun or just act in the present and isn't considering the future as much.
He is drinking a lot more too. Hopefully this will be a cool moment to give him proper development and growth. I hope they comment on thsese things in show.
I think I have one issue, albeit small, with Sherlock & Co.
I'm starting to grow tired and frankly a bit annoyed by how John is portrayed in comparison to Sherlock and Mariana.
He's just constantly dumb-ified, doesn't "help", only helps by mistake and complains, and does he really add anything to the adventure any more? Except fancy words once in a while, it's mostly him going against Sherlock and narrating.
Mariana and Sherlock seem to grow further and further away from him. Perhaps, if I were to consider this purposeful, it's John's way to be noticed.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong, maybe my interpretation is incorrect. But that's how I see it, and I feel that it is important to share different perspectives.
I do not mean any hate to the podcast at all, in fact I love it and follow it every week. It was just a thought.
Yes I've seen this too.
I hope they bring up his negative habits and give him good growth from it. He is being a bit less patient and more himself focused. I think he is thinking of the present much more than the future. He doesn't seem to think or consider the effect his actions will have long term (with his drinking habit) and is generally less involved with the case. I want to see more Watson development and I hope they play on this issue in the narrative. I want to see a proper argument happen. Everyone is just brushing off his worse behaviors and I want to see conflict happen. Sherlock doesn't seem to have his "dark moods" as he does in canon. Sherlock seems to be very dismissive of Watson's behavior but maybe Mariana can be the "straight man" of the group and comment on these things. There is so much potential to use this and I hope they pull through. Show off an argument between Sherlock and Watson that divides them and leads to case related issues (like maybe in the fall watson isn't there because he is being stubborn and leaves to go elsewhere not knowing the true dangers) or something.
They get into disagreements often in the original stories so it wouldn't be strange to see here.
Does anyone else think John's character is shifting in Sherlock and co like yeah he's always been an arse but recently that's been very amplified, John is a good friend and always has been to Mariana and Sherlock but there's something that feels like it's charging specifically after the Shoscombe old place almost a bit too arrogant as of recent.
I'm not taking a shit on John as a character don't get me wrong but he's definitely changed and I don't think that's for the better.
Maybe I'm being padantic about it and bringing up a small detail or maybe I've just noticed things about John from listening to Sherlock and co a bit too much .
BAKER STREET TRIO!!!!!
changed up how i draw them!! again!!! more closely aligned w the fanon designs this time :]
is the sherlock and co fandom dying im seeing so many less posts than i used to:(
The Red Circle Pt.2 (SPOILERS)
Part 2 notes, not time to explain let’s GO!!!!
Shoutouts!! (hopefully one day I’ll be a part of these)
“But it means I can stare at them disapprovingly. And tut on occasion” okay Sherlock going into mom mode
Seriously John, just get a new mic! We’re not saying toss the old one; just keep the old one as a trophy and use a new NON-BROKEN one
Lol John is all “I’m not taking on a case that feeds on Italian stereotyping” when that’s just what the whole case is
Idk why but the policeman’s “ok?” is just so funny to me
GREGSON MENTION!! We’re getting Inspector Gregson in this one, yay! And Sherlock asked for him by FIRST name (Tom)
I’ll always be amazed with how quickly Sherlock can pinpoint where someone is in under a minute
The chipmunk voices strike once more
Ooooh, I like Gregson’s voice <3
I’m sorry, but were Sherlock & John just HIDING in the same bathroom stall??
Oh no…Gregson REALLY hates him in this one…Sherlock, what did you DO??
Hehe jazzy Sinatra-esque music makes brain go brrrrrrrr
Aw, at least Gregson is a little bit nicer to John
HA a rare time when John gives the whole rundown of the case yet Sherlock was more worried about why Gregson hates him
Mariana: “I’m gonna make a cup of tea”, John: “Now you’re talking—that’ll get us thinking straight” ah yes the British approach to solving a problem
And off Sherlock goes to hang upside down! I love how this case is constantly confirming that he does this regularly
More shoutouts! (*cries* one day)
Oh? Lightbulb moment for John??
TWIN TOWNS!! Good catch, John!
Down goes Sherlock lol
Off they go to find Carlo, and accompanied with that great music again!
Oh shit…he’s dead
“He’s been branded….with a red circle” AND THE EPISODE ENDS THERE?!
Okay, now we’re getting into them actually investigating the case! I’m really liking this case so far. I know some people are thrown off by the tech issues, and normally I would be too, but I personally don’t hate it. Yeah the glitching isn’t great at times, but the chipmunk voices are becoming my favorite ongoing joke in this case (alongside Sherlock regularly hanging upside down in the flat). Also interesting twist to make Gregson not like Sherlock. I knew he would be in the case since he was in the acd story case, but I didn’t think Gregson would have some grudge against Sherlock! I like it tho; it’s nice getting some new things for parts in the story that didn’t have much to begin with. Also the MUSIC?! HELLO?? Thank you John for blessing my ears! And now we must wait another week for the next part…
One thing I adore about Sherlock and co is that John is actually useful.
He provides information that Sherlock wouldn't have been able to find without him, how John tries to help Sherlock socially, John's speeches there have been pieces of dialogue from John that are just pure poetry.
John is a very good character because he's always doing something that will never be boring even when he's being an arse it's never boring or insufferable and that's why I think Sherlock and co appeals to me.
As well as the character dynamics within Sherlock and co with how John, Sherlock and Mariana seem to balance each other out and work well together with Mariana having this sort of resilience to her like in the lions mane where she resolved an argument and brought a man (I seriously can't remember his name for the life of me) down from a heightened state and was able to get Information for the case that they would've never got if Mariana and John left like John insisted them to.
Also Sherlock being able to take the clues, the information to bring the case together, duduce what the others can't and solve the case with the help from John and Mariana.
It really works well as a dynamic for a trio as each character is similar so they work well together but also as individuals so it's entertaining to listen to.
WIP I'll never finish lol It is a lil sloppy but idk ig its a vibe lol
SPOILERS FOR RED CIRCLE PART 4
This is the second time Sherlock has physically assaulted a suspect. He (similarly to the dancing men) attacks the suspect while listing off their crimes/victims.
It was very nice to see Sherlock's boxing mentioned here too lol. I just found it worth noting that Sherlock seems to vent his frustrations regarding these injustices with physical action (such as choking Abe or brawling Berry)
RED CIRCLE EPISODE 4
Watson slipping and almost falling off the elevator shaft bro.
Sherlock climbing down and supporting their weight. It feels reminicient of the final problem. In the Soviet movies Sherlock survives the fall by clinging onto the side of the drop. Maybe they will do something similar here, as Sherlock has now shown us he is able to
I feel like Watson's PTSD isn't mentioned much. We know he doesn't like to shoot but aside from that there isn't much noted about it anymore. Watson being covered in the red paint is an example I saw someone comment on and I wish they did a little more with it. I've mentioned how I like to see the character's struggles more and I know we will not see everything (thats what fanfiction is for lol) but a mention or nod to it would be nice. Like early episode Sherlock commenting on his PTSD and trying not to trigger it. I know that they know eachother much more and Sherlock and Watson are comfortable enough to not worry about making eachother uncomfortable but in these higher stake cases a comment or two would be nice
Sherlock following Watson's path even though he didn't believe it to be faster is so cute. Like even though he didn't understand the thought process he still trusted Watson and allowed him to lead. Yes it backfired but it is the principal that counts lol
The resident patient has been so good so far omg
I just listened to the second episode and its so good, I can imagine super cool fanworks based off of this one
"Go ahead and die see if I care"
And then he fucking dies lol
Sherlock was goin through it this episode, can't have shit in London smh
