ZeroZaki's Humanity test passes with flying colors
One day an average high school student finds out she has latent homicidal tendencies and is adopted into a family of killers by a tall man in white attire and long black hair. Zerozaki’s humanity test is a manga adaptation of a light novel of the same name by prolific author NISIOISIN. I generally have a love-hate relationship with his works for their boring drawn out dialogue and anticlimactic resolutions. This manga however was a short and delightful read from start to finish. It's important to note that this is actually a spinoff from the Zaregoto novel series and as such features a few returning characters.
To elaborate on the plot, the main character Iori gets her life turned upside down after being targeted by an enemy of the zerozaki family. Her friends and family are killed by Soushiki after they were permanently brainwashed by Naguma Sawarabi and only has soushiki zerozaki to turn to. The man in question is in search to find his elusive serial killer brother Hitoshiki Zerozaki. Naguma on the other hand wants revenge for his sister who was killed by Hitoshiki and kidnaps Iori to bait the Zerozaki family. The manga is fairly short and has enough twists and turns to keep readers wanting more. I felt that the manga could've gone into more detail about the killing names( assassin clans) briefly mentioned but then again, I imagine the original novel goes into more detail.
The artwork has a nice crisp and clean feel to it, making the character designs feel full of life. Fight scenes are well put together and have a smooth flow. Since this is a Seinen manga, it doesn't exactly shy away from showing gore but doesn't embellish in it either.
NISIOISIN’s strongest skill is definitely his characterization and this manga reinforces that. Characters are quirky and are distinct from each other which make for interesting interactions. Soushiki is technically a villain since he comes from a family of killers and most likely kills innocent people but his suave and charismatic personality makes it so easy to forget that. He's a total gentleman despite being a monster. Iori Zerozaki certainly resonated with me the most since we both go through life without real direction. We run from our problems while hoping to go find a solution. I read this manga during the worst times in my life and seeing myself inside the protagonist was so blissful. A character I feel that could've used a lot more screen time was Hanamaki Kojika. He was a complex and conflicted character who unfortunately leaves the plot a few chapters after his introduction.
If you're the type of person who enjoys fast-paced thriller action, then Zerozaki's humanity test is the manga for you.
Juni Taisen Novel Mini Review
Like many Nisioisin series that aren't Monogatari, Juni Taisen is often overlooked by the public. There was a little fanfare when the anime came out a few years back before it was quickly forgotten. Is it even a story that deserves to stand the test of time?
JT's biggest pro is also its biggest con: the inner monologues. Readers only have a short time to get attached to the characters before they're abruptly killed by their opponent. This means that the writing is curt instead of the extensive roundabout dialogue Nisioisin is known for. I greatly prefer this writing style and it made for a brisk read. There wasn't any filler and everything was straight to the point. Though some characters were definitely less interesting than others, I felt that each one made a strong impact with the limited time they had.
My favorites are Inounoshishi due to her haughty attitude and Uuma for being a socially awkward beefcake. I just really love muscular guys, especially when they're shy.
The incredibly short battles was the only major flaw besides from the minimal characterization. It's a battle royale story so the fights should be the highlight but in here they're more of an afterthought. They don't even last a page. I'd be more disappointed if I wasn't already familiar with the author's penchant for anti climax. With Medaka Box as proof, Nisio can write inpreessuve battles when he wants to. C'est la vie.
Give this book a read if you enjoy character introspection and don't mind a battle royale without all the cool battles.

Magical Girl Raising Project Volume 1 Review : Dare to be Magical
Magical girls sure have it rough these days. It seems like gory death battles and agonizing despair is all they ever find themselves in. That's what schoolgirl Koyuki Himekawa learns after her favorite app game turns her into a real magical girl.
The concept of magical girls in a death game was something that immediately hooked me because it involved two genres I love. There are not enough dark Mahou shojo stories in the world and it's incredibly rare to have one as a light novel. The greatest strength of mgrp is the fact it's written from multiple perspectives. This allows readers to see how each girl copes with their grim reality and feel suspense as alliances and betrayals are born. Cranberry became my favorite character due to her sadistic lust for battle and expert use of her sound manipulation magic. La Pucelle is a close second due to his heroic bravery.
It would be impossible to talk about the characters without mentioning their stunning designs and creative abilities. Artist Maruino brought out her A game with her eye-catching costume designs. Ripple has a weird ninja/swimsuit fusion going on and Hardgore Alice looks like a gothic doll. Their abilities are also unique compared to the usual superpowers you see in fiction. Weiss' ability to conjure walls anywhere stood out for being surprisingly more useful than you'd expect.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel despite already watching the anime twice. The prose is written in a concise style that made reading a brisk experience free of filler. This brisk writing style leads to the story's main weakness of the fights being far too short. The battles often end as soon as they begin while the characters get killed off before readers get to know them. One fight happened entirely offscreen which I found to be sloppy writing. Later novels in the series thankfully rectify this by adding more details and characterization.
I definitely recommend this series for any reader in a battle royale or magical girl.
Verdict- Recommended. Stay magical.
Rokka no Yuusha Volume 2 Review ( Spoilers)
It's no exaggeration when I say that Rokka no Yuusha Volume 2 is one of the most enjoyable novels I've ever read. It was heavily drenched with drama and suspense to the point it was almost impossible to put down. This volume boldly opens up with a scene of Mora standing over Hans' dead body while a flustered Rolonia desperately tries to heal him. It's a daring choice to have such a heavy spoiler within the first few pages, but learning what led up to it is just as interesting.
Mora is the primary focus of this volume which means readers get a deep dive into her psyche. I was initially annoyed with Mora due to how determined she was in the first volume to antagonize Adler any chance she got. It struck me as odd that the wisest of braves acted so headstrong and even used deception to further increase tensions against Adlet. We then discover the reasoning behind her madness; a fiend general infected Mora's daughter with a parasite that will kill the girl unless Mora kills one of the braves before a certain date. This internal drama puts Mora in a much more sympathetic light and makes the readers root for her even when her deceptive ways appear once again. She's definitely a morally complex character that's much more layered than I expected her to be.
Besides Mora's inner conflict, there's still the issue of the seventh brave. The group remains suspicious of each other and often keeps at an arm's distance for fear of becoming a victim. I feel that the seventh may not be a malicious person due to their lack of action. They had multiple chances to make their attack on the squad but have yet to do so. It's possible the 7th might have been forced into their position or may not even be aware they're fake. In any case, the Braves' distrust of each other is possibly as deadly as the fiends.
I have to give praise to Ishio Yamagata for his natural talent for keeping readers on their toes. The fight scenes were vividly described with rich detail and Tgurneu's witty tactics made it impossible to predict what he'd do next. It's clear that the Braves are vastly outmatched by the fiends' numbers and strength which begs the question of how they'll ever stand a chance against the Majin. It was incredibly satisfying reading Adlet deduce Tgurneu's scheme since that was the only real form of victory the group has made thus far. It's a small step in the right direction.Â
I recently finished the penguindrum novel trilogy and I have to say it was a pretty well down adaptation. It's a perfect supplement for fans who were confused by all of the surreal symbolism the anime is known for. The novels are primarily told from Shoma's perspective, but frequently switches to other POVS. Unfortunately, Kanba never got a POV section, which is a shame since I really wanted to delve into his morally dubious mind. Shoma ended up being a more engaging character due to extra focus he got , a nice contrast from the anime. I definitely recommend these books for any Ikuhara fans out there.
Hellooo the writing frog has returned(no am not a furry or whatever is the equivalent to an amphibian humanoid>:[) and have some news. The writing process has been abit slow due to being busy and all, but I’ve managed to do a few summaries of the upcoming arcs. There’s still a lot I have to work on, but it’s ok. I also got some conceptual art from a few artists two of the characters being Shun and Atsuko. I’m excited for everything to come together and hopefully show more progress anyways I’ll leave this here good whatever time your reading this.
First two drawings: Shun Nakajima
Last drawing: Atsuko Fujimori
@tvpixel (unfortunately the other artist doesn’t have tumblr, but more art will be posted)
Back again. Right now progress is slow, but I’ve been looking into things and am planning to do an arg within the story of course the arg isn’t gonna be an irl thing where it’s interactive with the readers but a fictional arg that the characters try to solve and gradually obsess over. Still figuring out the concept for it, but I have seen a few that people have done, most favorite being the editor Wilbur arg. It’s really interesting and has a suspenseful vibe to it,but it gets a little confusing. Anyways, I’m willing to take suggestions on a few concepts and eventually see how it plays out. I’ll leave this here, good whatever time your reading :]
It’s been a minute since I posted haha. So started doing a script for the beginning of my story a month ago and so far it’s looking good. I also started a short timeskip story with the characters moved on in their life’s, but of course can’t forget the angst. For concept designs,it has been delayed and I’m not sure what I’m gonna do abt it. I’ve been reading light novels like durarara and the art is great might want to make my story into a comic don’t know. Anyways, good whatever time your reading this :]
(Miku shiba)
Fukuryu the Dragon of Luck is one of the countless Dragon familiars within the Ryumyaku, and is one of the most recurring Dragons to be summoned and aid the Dragon Sage in all endeavors. (The current Dragon Sage being Naku.) Because the Dragons' appearances are based on the imagination of the Ryumyaku's current possessor, Fukuryu's appearance is that of a humanoid dragon with bronze colored scales, his face completely obscured by the Black and White Dragon Sage mask, and dressed all in Onmyoji attire. The most significant part were his seven ways forked tail, each ending with a different colored four petaled flower and a shide. With each tail, Fukuryu can (to an extent) draw power from one if the Seven Lucky Gods. Fukuryu's forte is magic, represented by his enormously unwieldy gunbai uchiwa (war fan) that enables minor, but effective elemental conjuring and manipulation magics. The sword he possesses is more of an accessory rather than for actual combat. (In an RPG setting, he's a support role, buffing allies and de-buffing enemies. As far as offensive power goes, Fukuryu is the weakest within the Ryumyaku, next to Genshoryu and several countless, lesser dragons.) His true ace in the hole, is the ability to perform miracles a good. Only drawback he can only use this ability 7 times a year, after which it refreshes, but is there a still left over Miracles before the new year in the number just tell he's back to 7. No more no less Fukuryu is something of a trickster, even going so far as to crack jokes in times of absolute seriousness.
