Okay, so an hour ago I was watching a video of My Chemical Romance performing “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” live, and OMG. First of all, they’re so, so good, but that honestly isn’t the point of what I’m gonna say.
“Lie to me.”
I haven’t known their music for very long, but even I know that Frank Iero is supposed to say, “Trust me” in that bridge and he says something VERY different. Long story short, I have spent the past hour googling why he would say that and, inadvertently, learned that Frerard was possibly a thing. Yes, I’ve seen the videos of them kissing. Yes, I know what every shipper is talking about now.
But honestly, what I immediately focused on wasn’t the other implications. The first thing that resonated with me was, “Wow. Even changing the words, that bridge is still so powerful." And I really mean it - that whole song is already raw with the message of things AREN’T okay and yeah, saying otherwise is a façade. So that part in the bridge is like a denial, that mask they’re showing to the world - "But you really need to listen to me, ‘cause I’m telling you the truth, I mean this, I’m okay." I get that, I really do. I think we all do, in a way, because we all have those moments where we’re seriously not okay but we have to pretend like we are and do a good job of it. We have to be convincing.
That’s why I honestly wasn’t paying attention to double meanings with what Frank said - because the song is still just as perfect. "Trust me” goes along with that need for people to believe you’re fine when you’re anything but. “Lie to me” has the opposite kind of desperation - as in, “If it’s so easy to convince others I’m okay, why can’t someone do the same to me? God, why can’t I be the one to believe it?”
Both lines have a similar sentiment, just different delivery, and they’re just so raw and powerful. Were there other reasons for him saying it? Maybe, but this is what stood out to me. Because whatever the purpose, “Lie to me” isn’t a random change to the song. It’s something that strikes a chord just as deep as the original words.
