"I am incapable; I discern between sorrow, anger, and fear no more. They're all the same to me. I am blind."
Emily Yvonne, fragments of my mind
She creeps into you, silent and unnoticed. She hides in plain sight; her roar masks as that of rage, the clicking of her high heels assigned to your demeaned pride. The heaviness she spreads obscured as sorrow, the constant apathy is surely a result of your hurt feelings. And you blame all the other, while she walks amongst them with a cruel smile of mockery, revealing the sharp teeth. Her cold hand stroking your hair and caressing your cheek as to comfort you, is mistaken for a hand of reason; through tears and scattered focus you don't see the black claws. You only realize they're there when she shoves them under your ribs and throat, pulling you, step by step, as she likes. Eventually the little boy you know so well, the one with shocking blue eyes and black hair, holding your favourite piece of chocolate, catches up and grabs your hand..he wants to go on a walk too... He's not afraid of her, and she respects him... You won't fight her, she's the only confidence you have left, the only one, though painfully, holding you up.. And you won't fight him either, why would you fight the only one who's always been there?
Emily Yvonne
To be clear- Cinderpelt finding a new sense of purpose and direction as a medicine cat OF HER OWN FREE WILL after suffering a life-changing injury is not ableism. Firestar constantly feeling sorry for her when she's clearly happy and lamenting the fact that she never got to be a Warrior every time she so much as crosses his line of sight is ableism.
Briarlight being physically unable to preform traditional Warrior duties and finding other things that she can do around camp that make her feel good about herself as a contributing member of her community is not ableism (though they really should've explored it more). Millie explicitly saying that Jayfeather keeping her daughter alive is only prolonging her suffering and that she will always have an "incomplete" life is ableism.
Longtail choosing to retire to the elders den early because he feels unable to comfortably preform his Warrior duties after the loss of his sight is not ableism. Jayfeather being told his blindness means he has no other choice but to become a medicine cat and then being bullied into it by the adults in his life and even his ancestors, despite the fact that he states again and again that he wants to be a Warrior, is ableism.
Disabled characters existing, and not being able to do all of the things that fully abled characters can do is not the problem, and rewriting them to be able to do everything able bodied warriors can is not the solution. The problem is denying disabled characters agency, refusing to accept that they can find happiness and fulfillment in non-traditional roles in Clan life, and treating their lives as though they are somehow diminished by their disabilities.
Woo was able to change my blog name to what I've been using for ages elsewhere :) I'll see about posting here more with some time.
At the moment I'm dealing with more vision loss and it's finally taken away my ability to art. There's a lot of up and down with the grief of that and I'm not having the best time. Just trying to go easy and let this pass while respecting that I am physically and emotionally not doing great. But hey, now I really don't have a reason not to write heh.
I think since 2019 when things started to really go downhill with my vision I had this idea that I could pick art back up whenever, it would be fine. But even then I knew I'd lost the ease with which I always had access to it. Now even the illusion of picking it back up is gone and, man. It's a kick in the head for sure. That's blindness for you, though. Just gotta give myself time to process this new reality and grieve the old.
Vision fatigue on top of covid fatigue really sucks though. Like so much haha. XD Spent all day asleep, couldn't even get up for long until the sun went down. Looks like I'll be wearing my darkest Stevie Wonder shades for awhile heh.
Going to have to travel internationally without my guide dog because UPSâ idea of âovernightâ is âmaybe youâll get it Mondayâ and my flight leaves tomorrow (Sunday). Months of work and vet visits and about $500 all for nothing because a single document is just sitting in a mail room in my city somewhere
Whenever people start getting excitted about tech companies putting things in their heads, I tell them about what Second Sight did to their Argus II patients.
how does your blindness impact your art? I would have thought that it would be impossible for a blind person to work in a purely visual medium like you do, but clearly that's not the case. do you use adaptive tech or specific styles/techniques?
(I apologize if this question is ableist. I would like to know more about your experiences, but I don't have a great grasp of what's appropriate to ask and what isn't. I am not trying to be rude.)
Oooh thank you for asking! :) For the record, Iâm pretty chill, I know there arenât exactly a ton of us blindies out there, so feel free to ask questions with the language you have. :)
Haha oh man, my blindness has impacted my art from the very first thing I drew at age 4. I have a small amount of vision in my left eye; no depth perception, no peripheral vision, no distance, pretty good colors though. Life to me is basically a smear of nonsense colors that I put meaning to through context and location. The closest thing to seeing anything clearly Iâve ever gotten was watching cartoons, which I did obsessively as a kid. So first and foremost, I donât and canât draw from life, it makes no sense to me. The bold, simple actions of animation and the heavy stylization has taught me a ton.
Over the years my style has become very much about being high contrast, high visibility. But it also tangles with my love of doing pretty intricate detail work (itâs soothing, what can I say XD). In the past I was strictly a traditional media artist and I drew with what I had on hand. Growing up in poverty, what I had was the pens I used to write with in school and the paper I scrounged out of recycling bins. I basically mashed my face on the paper and worked in light angled over my shoulder that wasnât too bright. I clipped paper to clip boards so Iâd always have something lightweight enough to hold in one hand while I drew with the other. Iâd sketch in pencil and ink using my very beefy prescription reading glasses, and everything I do had to be self taught. Life drawing class just doesnât do anything for the dude who canât see the model. :D
In 2019 a botched cataract surgery cost me most of my functional vision. I can no longer read print for any length of time, I donât watch tv, and increasingly I just forget to look at most things with my eyes. But! I have an iPad. :D It took a few years and finding a pair of beefy store bought readers so I can focus enough to draw, but using Procrate and zooming down to the pixel as well as sketching on a black background makes the art still possile. I still draw mostly the same way I did with traditional media. I know brushes could probably be used to make some things easier, but I donât have the spoons or visual stamina to figure out how to use them except for making quick backgrounds (pro tip: never have your character or object floating in a white void, even a single line to ground them will make your work better).
Color of late has been an interesting thing because I literally do not understand how light and shadow really works. Iâve read up on it but thereâs only so much anyone can do when they just canât see the thing. I like to ink the best and color is just an experiment Iâm trying every time I do it heh. I make up little rules of style for myself and do a lot of guesswork based on the full shape I think a thing or character has, if that makes sense. I donât know how a lot of things work visually so I will make stuff up, guess, or youâll see some funky style things that happen because I read a medical paper once and just like drawing the holes in an iris (thatâs what the lines in charactersâ eyes are heh).
Iâll have to make a video sometime. Some of this stuff probably makes more sense in action.
Tl,dr: I mash my face onto an iPad and use 35-ish years of drawing experience to guess at what leoks right. :D I donât think I would have become an artist if I wasnât blind, I would have had more to look at to distract me. XD
Hopefully I'll remember to add this to my pinned post but if I don't, here's the answer to the first four questions everybody has when they see a blind person on the internet (and in person, I wish I could just beam this into their heads). :D
An excellent answer to all your basic questions about how the blind use technology!
Yes to all of these! I really never want to hear how amazing I am for walking to a bus stop again please, but I am happy to get acknowledged for the 36 years of work I've put into drawing with a severe lack of sight. :)
Top 5 MOST useful tools for blind people just starting out
Top 5 most fave tools for the blind overall
Top 5 least useful
Top 5 fucking weirdest and/or funniest
This is a big ask and I will do my best to answer, with the caveat that I am just a single blind person with memory issues who doesn't remember everything my blind friends have told me. XD I am counting other people as tools in this list because a person with eyes sometimes is a handy tool for us. XD
Top 5 MOST useful tools for blind people just starting out 1. White cane 2. Blindness skills training through centers, government programs like Vocational Rehabilitation, Orientation & Mobility specialists, and anywhere you can find it 3. Membership with the National Talking Book Library aka NLS in your state (US); I think the UK is RNIB and Canada has one, not sure about other countries 4. Supportive family and friends and other blind people if you can find them 5. Screen reader (NVDA is free for Windows, iPhone has VoiceOver, Android uses TalkBack)
Top 5 most fave tools for the blind overall 1. White cane and/or guide dog 2. Text to speech, screen readers, audio books, audio described movies and tv 3. Accessible smart phones (often iPhone but Android is catching up) 4. Bump dots (stick-on tactile dots you put around your home) 5. Braille and refreshable braille displays/notetakers
Top 5 least useful 1. Sighted people inventing crap without talking to any blind people ("smart" canes, "smart" shoes, dangerous devices you hold in your only free hand that claim to tell you what's in front of you but actually don't, screen reader breaking "accessibility" overlays, etc...) 2. That ring which only shows one braille cell at a time (that's not how anyone reads) 3. Strangers giving/yelling vague directions ("It's right over there!", "Oh my god watch out for the stairs (that you are halfway down)!", giving directions to the guide dog who doesn't speak English or any language because they are a dog...) 4. Hot liquid measuring devices (always broken, the noise they make is so fucking loud it's caused me a lot more injury than just sticking my finger in the hot liquid, will wake up the neighbors) 5. All but one use case of AI claiming to be for the blind, at least as far as I've seen
Top 5 fucking weirdest and/or funniest 1. Ping pong balls (good for measuring hot liquids) 2. Funnels (really helpful for pouring liquids) 3. The lanyard strap that sticks to the back of your phone so you can wear it around your neck (looks silly, is incredibly useful) 4. White cane holster (yes it's a thing, I have at least three XD) 5. Things being organized Very Specifically (close your eyes and YOU try to find the remote after someone put it in a random place! XD)
A blind friend of mine was nearly killed by mislabelled meds and I certainly struggle with mine because I can't read them and accessible pharmacy anything is really hard to get (never did get a call back from ScripTalk). I'd love to be able to just read a label when I'm having a migrain and can't use my eyes too, that would be rad.
