Samhain Ritual Part 1 - Calling the Ancestors
The sigil above represents a cemetery and was created by @qedavathegrey . You can see their post about the sigil and it’s ideal uses here.
To complete the first part of this ritual you will need:
a cauldron or cast-iron cooking pot
graveyard dirt (from the cemetery of an ancestor or from the grave of an ancestor if you can)
purified water
candles (mullein is best) and matches
salt
Herbs associated with the dead which are safe to burn (dried apple chips, bay leaves, wormwood, mugwort, myrrh, frankincense)
Any pictures or messages that you would like to send to your ancestors
If you are performing the ritual at the graveside of one of your ancestors, first clear the grave and headstone of any debris. Place candles on the headstone and around the grave (if you are doing the ritual at home, place the candles in a circle).
Sitting in front of your ancestor’s grave (or inside your circle). In a cauldron or cast iron pot, place a layer of salt and then a small mound of graveyard or grave dirt in the pot. Pour a little of the purified water onto the dirt in the pot so that it is damp. Make a small hole in the centre of the mound and place your chosen herbs and incense associated with the dead which are safe to burn (dried apple chips, bay leaves, wormwood, mugwort, myrrh, frankincense etc.)
Light the herbs on fire – they should settle into a light smoulder.
Say Formal Message – “We have come here on this night when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest, to honour those who have come before. We offer thanks for the teachings and lessons bestowed upon us and we pray that they have found comfort and rest in the realms of the dead.”
“Open wide, I pray thee, the gates through which all must pass. Let my dear ones who have gone before, return this night to make merry with me. And when my time comes as it must to all living things, I ask that Death, the giver of peace and rest, allow me to enter thine realms, for I will come gladly and unafraid; for I know that when rested and refreshed among my loved ones, I will be reborn again. I ask that once I rise anew, let it be in the same place and at the same time as my beloved ones, and may I know and love them once more.”
Stand and turning anti-clockwise, face west (as the sun sets) “The west is the land of the dead, to which many of my loved ones have gone for rest and renewal. On this night, I hold communion with them; as I hold the image of these loved ones in my heart and mind, I send welcome to those who have crossed over.”
“Beloved ones, in this time, when the veil is at its thinnest, I welcome you to spend a day with your descendants. I ask that you remain at peace, and grace us with your presence.”
“I call upon thee, name of ancestor you are calling. Relation to your person. When they died (day/month/year).” (Repeat as necessary) “I wish you well and ask that you watch over me. Please do not judge my actions for my time is not yours and our lives are very different. Do not despair for this is the path I have chosen.”
Burn offerings for ancestors (photos of family, poems, food and drink) and talk to ancestors (informal). If you’re calling relatives who have passed on that you knew in life, converse with them as you did while they were alive. However if you did not actually meet this ancestor in life then you should introduce yourself. This conversation should be relatively informal (you are related after all however it’s best to be polite and respectful at all times.

Totem Acrylic, dirt and steel on wood.
Let the torch-light lead your way
to the crossroads where fresh fruits and flowers lay.
Gently crawling fog, it whispers,
surrounding us, dancing sisters.
The raven of coal feathers flutters
above the heads of my dear brothers.
If you listen, all the living sounds with croon;
the revered forest, hills and the waning moon.
A memory embodied by a candle-flame;
none shall grow forgotten, call them each by name.
In my ebony hair the wreathed yew,
as death entwines with something new.

#repost• @whatsculture History Class: Tracing the roots of Capoeira. The Afro-Brazilian martial art form incorporates acrobatics, dance, folklore, and music. Two opponents play each other inside a circle (Roda) formed by the other players, who create rhythm for the game by clapping, singing, and playing traditional instruments. It’s the second most popular sport in Brazil and is practiced in different parts of the world today. To understand the significance, we look at how it is a phenomenon born out of migration.
“Capoeira was conceived in Africa and born in Brazil,’’ Mestre Jelon Vieira once said. As a colony of the Portuguese Crown, millions of Africans were shipped and sold in Brazil. There, enslaved Africans shared their cultural traditions, including dances, rituals, and fighting techniques, which eventually evolved into capoeira. Many elements and traditions that would inform capoeira are said to have originated in Angola. At that time, 80% of all enslaved Africans in Rio de Janeiro came from Central West Africa from countries that are now known as Gabon, Angola and both Congos.
People from Angola were prominent among the enslaved Africans who played the game on the streets and squares of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and other Brazilian port cities at the beginning of the nineteenth century. With many enslaved Africans revolting against slavery, they would soon form communities in villages called quilombos in which they could sustain different expressions of African culture. They used capoeira to defend themselves and resist capture, disguising its martial intent with music, song, and dance.
Capoeira became illegal after the abolition of slavery in 1888. Practitioners were socially ostracised for more 40 years, until the legendary capoeira master, Mestre Bimba, opened the first capoeira school in Bahia in 1932. From there, the martial art would reach all parts of the world. At its core, capoeira is born out of a mix of African and Brazilian indigenous cultures and it represents resistance and resilience 🇧🇷🌍

Exploring the Mystical World of Spirit Companions: A Journey into the Unknown
Shaina Tranquilino
September 9, 2023
Where spiritual beliefs and practices vary greatly, one concept that has gained considerable attention is that of spirit companions. Often seen as ethereal beings or energies from another realm, these companions are said to offer guidance, protection, and even friendship to those who seek their presence. While some may dismiss this idea as mere fantasy or wishful thinking, others have embraced the existence of spirit companions and experienced profound transformations in their lives. In this blog post, we delve into the intriguing realm of spirit companions and explore what they mean to believers.
Understanding Spirit Companionship:
Spirit companionship refers to an individual's connection with a non-physical entity that acts as a guide or companion throughout life's journey. These spirits can take various forms, including animals, angels, ancestors, deities, or even mythical creatures. Believers often form deep bonds with their spirit companions through meditation, rituals, or simply by acknowledging their presence.
The Role of Spirit Companions:
Spirit companions serve different purposes for each individual they accompany. One common belief is that these entities provide guidance and wisdom during times of confusion or decision-making. They are thought to possess knowledge beyond our human understanding and can assist in navigating life's challenges.
Moreover, spirit companions are believed to offer protection against negative energies and entities. Many followers claim that their spirit companions act as guardians who shield them from harm and help maintain positive energy in their surroundings.
Beyond guidance and protection, these mystical beings can also bring comfort and support during times of emotional turmoil. Some individuals find solace in knowing they are never truly alone when facing difficult situations – having a loyal companion from another realm can be incredibly reassuring.
Connecting with Spirit Companions:
Connecting with a spirit companion requires an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Meditation plays a vital role in establishing and strengthening this connection. By quieting the mind, individuals create a space for communication with their spirit companions, enabling them to receive messages or insights.
Rituals such as lighting candles, offering prayers or offerings, or creating an altar dedicated to the spirit companion can also deepen one's bond with these ethereal beings. These rituals serve as acts of reverence and acknowledgment of their presence in our lives.
The Skeptic's Perspective:
As with any belief system involving the unseen and esoteric, skepticism naturally arises when discussing spirit companions. Some may argue that these experiences are simply products of human imagination or psychological manifestations linked to personal needs for comfort and support. While it is essential to approach spiritual beliefs critically, dismissing the idea of spirit companions outright might ignore the potential for personal growth and fulfillment that many have found through these connections.
Whether you believe in spirit companions or not, exploring this mystical concept offers a unique perspective on spirituality. The notion that there might be entities beyond our physical realm who offer guidance, protection, and companionship opens doors to endless possibilities. For those who have experienced the profound impact of connecting with a spirit companion, they become cherished allies along life's journey – guiding us towards self-discovery, providing comfort during challenging times, and reminding us that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

Ancestors
Ok that TikTok trend about speaking to ancestors is trowing my classical-student rotten brain into mush!
I am getting emotional over everything now each time i do something i am hugged by the sense of belonging because people have always been people are we are so much alike it hurts as much as it makes everything so much more beautiful
Like how many women spend time knitting in bed happy to have found the yarn of their favorite color just like i am?
Some roman soldier read the same Aeneid I am studying now, and was pissed of at Odysseus for leaving one of his men with the cyclops?
I put fancy lotions on my skin like Greek women did?
A church in my town is older than my country itself, how many people have been there before me? I might have their blood running in my veins.
I have a Latin dictionary from 1927, a student had a note with the third declination written in it, I did the same on mine because i cannot memorize it for the life of me.
I wore light blue eyeshadow today, maybe an Egyptian woman did the very same thing this very same day just thousands of years before me?
Ginkgos are older than humanity itself, most of us to seen at least one in our life i think.
We all have names and a favorite color, and a best friend, and we all felt love at least once, we all probably ate too much of our favorite food once or twice, we all felt the sun on our face and saw the star at night and maybe if we thought about it a bit more we will all fell closer.
I hope they are happy
I hope my ancestors are happy, I hope they look down on me and are so, so proud of themselves, and maybe a little bit of me.
I get to get ready to go out with a friend (How many girls in my bloodline did the same? I don't think there is anything more universal), I get to put coconut oil in my hair and spray it profume on me (My great-grandparents probably didn't even know what a coconut was), I get to put Arnica gel on my poor legs after going to the gym (My ancestors were roman, maybe a soldier long, long ago did the same thing with the same kind of plant), I have gold and silver on my wrists, rings and bracelets (My mother’s name means “Leftovers” they had nothing, nothing, and now i wear gold and silver)
I get to do all of this because of them, because they existed, and they loved, and they hoped and prayed and did all they could to give their children a better life than the one they had (“Everything we do is for you, dont you dare feel guilty about that” my fathers say when i am sad because they have to spend money on me). And I am so so thankful, and I wish I could repay them, I wish I could do something to show them how much it meant at the end, how good they did, because gods they deserve to know that.
And i hope and i wish and i pray i am making them proud to because i am doing my very very best, to make a name for myself and make my family, all of them included so so proud of me and make sure my kinds, like me, like their kids, got to live a better life than the one i had, even if mine is really really good and i am thankfull.
