● i'm working on a new carrd, but it's a slow process. thanks for your patience ! ● i'll be adding back some old dropped muses, as well as some new ones & some "secret menu" but requestable character options that are really just here for my friends ( & sometimes one specific friend lol). stay tuned for the full, updated list. ● i'm going to consider this blog to be in a state of permanent semi-hiatus for the next year or so while i'm in grad school. activity until then will remain spotty. ● on that note, i think i'm going to unfollow some folks that i haven't yet interacted with. while i really wish i could write with everyone, the truth is that i'm just not in a space to accept new partners at the moment. so unless we already write, it will likely be awhile before i have the time & energy to reach out. until i graduate, this blog will be pretty much entirely geared towards my existing partners & close friends who have gotten used to waiting actual eons between replies.

THE UNBROKEN HORIZON is an unwelcome sight, izzy's frown deepening as he scans for any sign of approach & finds none. ❝ how can we wait anymore ? ❞ he questions. despite the renewed sense of purpose he had found upon joining the fight against the crown, patience was not a virtue he'd been blessed with. & silver seemed to hold confidence their leader, near as he could tell. but in truth, izzy still wasn't certain what to make of the legendary captain flint & his ever-shifting plans to stoke the war. the uncertainty of it had left him feeling restless, mistrustful. ❝ i'm still wondering what it is we're even waiting for. ❞

❝ THIS IS HOW IT IS — how it's always been. ❞ they're alone in the captain's cabin, just the two of them, & izzy allows himself to watch frenchie's hands with open appraciation as they gracefully move over the strings of his lute. with the wedding fast approaching, the new captain & his first mate had a surprise performance to plan. & given all that they'd been through in recent weeks, it felt only right to celebrate their collective survival. a little strange, maybe, but somehow fitting. ❝ we exist in the face of suffering & death & somehow still keep singing. ❞

WHEN HE WAS A BOY, stede had always hoped that he would someday marry for love. of course, that not being the case, he had ultimately found marriage to be a rather uncomfortable endeavor. but now, with edward's eyes both shy & hopeful as they wait for his answer, stede knows in his heart that the arrangement he proposes would be nothing like the constricting obligatory institution he'd experienced before.

& so, smiling, he carefully slips a ring from his own finger — the turquoise one they had exchanged on that first day they'd met — & gently onto ed's left hand instead. ❝ just say you love me, & we'll go find a preacher man. ❞ stede was certain that they could find some wayward holy man that was either drunk or poor enough to perform a bastardized wedding between two men. & if not, well, they could always ask a captain to marry them at sea, just as lucius & pete had done. ❝ we'll live our lives together. hand in hand. ❞

anyway, the only time we ever see izzy's right hand without the glove is in that scene belowdeck when ed asks him to shoot him & he refuses, & during the storm scene directly thereafter where he does shoot ed to prevent him from destroying the ship & killing the crew. pretty incredible that the only time he ever shows his hand (literally speaking) is during the climactic moment of breakdown of his relationship with ed.

what's even more interesting is that in the scene with him & ed belowdeck, you can see that he has a little red heart tattoo on the junction of his right hand & thumb to match the black spade on his left. notable here that ed has a spider tattoo on his hand, which he says that he covers with gloves because he's afraid of spiders. in contrast, izzy has a heart tattoo on his right hand, which is always covered except in the above noted exceptions. the symbolism is not subtle. this is a man who guards his love from being seen, literally & figuratively hides his heart because he's afraid of love — until he finds himself in an active a life-or-death situation where there is no other choice but to face it & act on it.

there isn't a brand there as far as i can tell... but it's my blog & i do what i want, so i'm probably still keeping my back-of-hand deserter's brand headcanon, at least in most verses. his right hand has both the brand & the little heart tattoo (to me).
