I’m pretty surprised that Francesca would welcome Eloise coming with her and John to Scotland, given how motivated she is to leave her family and find herself. All she wants is a quiet house, something she reiterates again and again. Eloise, though Francesca loves her, is not quiet. Even if she will stay in her own “wing of the castle” (bold assertion from Francesca, who hasn’t seen the castle? Is there an extra wing for Eloise?), I struggle to imagine a scenario in which Francesca gets her peace, quiet, and independence if Eloise is there. Especially if Eloise wants to go to Scotland to find herself and be social.

Also, if I hadn’t been confused by fan reactions and googled the plot line with Michaela Kilmartin (turns out John dies and Francesca falls for his cousin, a man named Michael in the books), I would never have guessed that she would be Francesca’s ultimate love interest. I didn’t read “gay panic” into Francesca’s reaction to Michaela, I read “my honeymoon is getting crowded.”

I will also be very sad if they write that plot as if Francesca never deeply, truly loved John. I want “I loved John and I lost him and we found solace in each other,” not “John was a good man, but now that I’ve found you, my passion has been truly awakened.” I love that Francesca and John love quietly and calmly. I love that she defends that love to Violet. I don’t want Violet’s notion that the best kind of love is overwhelmingly passionate, that John isn’t enough since Francesca isn’t reacting strongly enough for Violet’s liking, to be validated by Francesca being wildly, physically impassioned by Michaela.
