The sun was a daisy, encircled by a blossom of clouds that sailed peacefully in the blue sky. The black and yellow fuzz of bees danced before your eyes and buzzed within your ears, upon the flowers bejewelled by morning dew. From your view of the school garden, daisies popped up everywhere. Many of them trampled upon and violently ripped out of the ground, no longer within the sun’s embrace.
They were deemed inferior as flowers despite being as pure as their white petals, despite us all being children of the earth and the sun shining upon us all. Akin to mockingbirds, they simply existed and sang with the wind which is why their murder was such a sin. They were innocent yet innocence can easily be tainted by lies to which all of us were born to suffer and die.
The sigh which slipped from your lips was carried away by the breeze. Sunlight spilled through the trees, leaves raining upon the ground, and your desk was warm wherever the light touched.
Your textbook laid open before you but the sun’s rays did not enlighten the sentences within it for your eyes. Your mind could not wrap around the paragraphs of information which appeared like unsurmountable walls you could never climb over. Hence, it was no surprise that you couldn’t even look Mr Min in the eye when he announced that he’d return everybody’s test papers.
Your gaze was downcast, hands curled into fists on top of your skirt, as he walked down your aisle of desks. Each step of his leather shoes echoed within your ears as you waited with bated breath. The warmth of his spicy cologne tickled your nostrils as he came nearer, beckoning you to concentrate on his every movement.

The blanket of night had fallen and the servants had long made their departure. Jimin did not bother to turn on the lights, rays of moonlight landing upon the granite kitchen island where he sat.
Lips tinted red, the wine was lush and bold, like the blooming hibiscus flowers in the garden. It burned in his mouth like the summer night’s heat where he could easily imagine the dip of your low cut dress and the veil of sweat on your chest where a man’s lips might’ve descended.
Shards of glass flew everywhere as Jimin threw his wine glass onto the floor. His eyes squeezed shut, tears rather than sweat threatening to drip down his grave countenance. He was tortured by the images in his head where he cursed you over and over again. He had strictly ordered you to never go out late at night but the hands on the clock read that it was half past midnight.
You had betrayed him. It was like a knife being twisted in his heart as he remembered the flutter of your lashes, the tip of your nose brushing the apple of his cheek as you wrapped your arms around his neck and murmured, “I promise I won’t, daddy.”
You had been seated on his warm lap, his arm around your waist as he gently pressed his lips to your forehead before slipping the heavy, black AMEX card into your palm. It had been your eighteenth birthday and his beloved stepdaughter had bloomed into a rose.
Jimin’s fist, the size of his heart, clenched in anger. But, the tighter he held onto you, the quicker you slipped through his fingers. Every rose had its thorns and nothing was forever.

You sit there waiting for the sermon to be over. You don’t even know why you still come to these things. You don’t believe in god and it’s honestly the bane of your week. Maybe it’s the familiarity that keeps you coming back. Your parents always made you come when you were younger and were just as persistent now that you were older. even though you didn’t live with them anymore. They often made you face confessional every week for sins that you never understood, whether it be you were boasting too much about how you’d done at school, showing the ugly head of your pride or if you not helping around the house as much as you should showing your sloth.
Your parents were born again Christians so they were stricter than the average family. A lot of your friends were also Christian, you went to a Christian school, Sunday school and Christian fellowship camp every summer and yet they could never really make you believe. There was just something so … dumb, about it. Not that you thought people who believed were dumb, in fact you more than envy the way they have something to truly believe in (Something your parents would also make you confesses for if they ever knew) but for you, you could never find sense in the story. It just wasn’t for you.
For some reason though, time and time again you found yourself coming back here, settling into nostalgia amongst the pews in the hall and the people you’ve known your entire life. Just because you didn’t believe it didn’t mean you couldn’t find yourself comfortable, regardless of the memories of walking out crying from the guilt and shame it used to make you feel about yourself. You just have to think of all the good things that happened, the friends you made and the life lessons you learnt. Pushing away the feeling that you’d never be enough for the people closest to you.
