When I was a little boy, the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor. It was a surprise attack, and thousands of U.S. servicemembers perished. As a nation, we were stunned. And we vowed to strike back. Revenge was understandably on everyone’s mind, including many Americans of Japanese descent who opposed the emperor and were peaceful and law-abiding U.S. citizens and residents.

In its zeal to exact that revenge, however, the U.S. government overreacted, out of fear and bigotry. They targeted everyone who happened to look like the people who had carried out the attack. Those of us who had done nothing wrong were forced to pay the consequences for the decisions of others far away and disconnected from us. We were interned for years, in open-air prisons, while America went off to fight Japan, Germany and Italy.

It’s so important that we carry the lessons of the past through to today. Merely because one group commits atrocities and acts with depravity does not mean vast hundreds of thousands or even millions of others should be lumped together with them and made to suffer. We must never paint with the brush of justice and retaliation too broadly, or the toll of human suffering will rise immeasurably.

So the part of Odysseus deciding to discard mercy and become a monster that i personally see as a tragedy is that mercy has both already and soon will save his life.

It is, purely, Circe's mercy that saves Odysseus in "There Are Other Ways" as well as some of his men. She even cites it as an act of kindness that hopefully will lead to more people being kind. She doesn't just spare him too but reveals information to him at no cost and probably provides his crew some real food.

Then two sagas later Odysseus's crew spares him in Mutiny. He has just proven he is now more willing to sacrifice them then try to find a more peaceful solution, he is willing to kill Eurylochus when challenged. The two's exchange in "Thunder Bringer" but we'll die // i know distinctly lacks any bit of surprise. No one is surprised after Scylla that he would make the choice to preserve himself. And yet after the crew stabs him in Mutiny, they do not kill him. Even if this was a weighed risk, for whatever reason they spare him which we do not know, whether a unanimous decision of one that Eurylochus himself vouched for out of sentiment, the crew do spare him. They could have killed him, could have thrown him overboard, let him bleed out, but they kept him alive for what to me was at least days and definitely tended to his wounds.

Mercy despite the motive comes through in epic the musical and i don't doubt it will be a theme to come up again. It's the opposite of Ruthlessness

Y'all ever wonder if, while Apollo was Lester, Apollo's body was in his room, a lifeless corpse with his eyes open, displaying what Lester saw?

Yeah, welcome to the concept of

Corpsepollo

In which Apollo is a fucking corpse in Olympus. Made by me, and contributed to by various others who I don't know if they wanna be tagged nor do I exactly know and/or remember what their handles are.
